Right, hippy alert. The Grateful Dead. Before you throw rocks, hear me out. So, when the Dead get noodly, which they are prone to do, my wife says it sounds like having ‘itchy ears’. Fair dos. The Dead were more of a live beast and there was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert. I was lucky enough to see them. Songs from albums were worked on, jammed, mutated, over decades’ worth of gigs, making the original LP versions often sound like stiff demos.
That aside, this album has always had a soft spot in my heart. ‘American Beauty’ is the album to check out as a simpler introduction to the band. You could play it at your Granny with no adverse effects. ‘Terrapin Station’ is mell-o and sunny, but sophisticated. Released in 1977 at the height of Punk, it inhabits its own little world. To help you connect, maybe, it’s good to know the band had two drummers so the rhythm and percussion is fluid, textured and layered. Jerry Garcia had a finger missing but managed to play incredible guitar licks, with or without an array of FX pedals. Not in a clever-clogs Frank Zappa way. This was a band that played together: everything worked for the whole.
‘Estimated Prophet’ has a mild reggae vibe and is the strongest track on side one. ‘Dancin’ in the Streets’ is the old Vandellas hit disco-fied and, if I’m honest, is not my fave. ‘Passenger’ sounds West Coast FM Radio. ‘Samson & Delilah’ is mid-tempo Southern boogie. ‘Sunshine’ is slow balladry with strings. So far, so slick: pleasant enough AOR for a sunny afternoon.
Side two is the main event, ‘Terrapin Part 1’, a side long medley of linked songs and tunes. It moves, floats, builds, swells, recedes, unfolds. It’s almost a classical music piece, but not in a Prog-Rock stylee. There’s a story in there too, probably. Don’t matter. It’s… unique. Leave your prejudices behind, carve out 16 minutes and give it a listen, preferably with the sun streaming in...

This is the underside of one of our crop, which I set on the trunk of my car for a distracted moment, then realized I could make something of this shot, just sitting there as it was.
I call this "Shitake on Rolling Wave", aka "Fungus on Fender"
I started with my photo of the breaker finishing one of his dance moves.
The image on the ground is one i took of two women crawling on the floor for a shoot. i used the polar coordinates on that image and blended it using the various techniques learnt. I used one of the watercolour effects we got in the bonus section and some light renders on it as well as zoom effect. I used topaz to bring in a ghost effect on it and just used some of it. I used another picture i had taken of a band with their lights and used that as at a low opacity to help as extra subtle lighting points through it all. I added a texture layer that i took of a frozen buddle with some stones and applied that as well! Finished with one of the frames from the bonus section
