Greetings arrived from the project inspection team outside of the newly constructed Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute in Juneau, Alaska. The new National Marine Fisheries Service science and research institute is the new home of the significantly upgraded Alaska Fisheries Science Center's Auke Bay Laboratories.
Major fishing industries, state and federal fishery regulators, and international treaty bodies depend on Auke Bay's broadly used information about fish stocks, fish habitats, and the chemistry of marine
environments. The upgraded lab enables NOAA to expand into critical research areas, including work aimed at understanding species -specific physiological responses to likely consequences of changing climate. With such understanding, NOAA can develop models to forecast the population, community and ecosystem effects of these responses and develop scenarios to forecast the socio-economic consequences.

The kit and its assembly:
This whiffy whif was a spontaneous idea, when I wondered what non-Japanese aircraft could plausibly wear Manchukuo markings? A German type was an option, and then I came across the stillborn Messerschmitt Bf 109X with its radial engine – an aircraft of which only a single prototype was ever built and flown.
There are even model kits available of this obscure aircraft. My basis is the Amodel kit, a typical short-run IP kit with good overall detail (interior and landing gear is nice), thick material but many smaller flaws and rather mediocre fit (the fuselage halves seem to belong to two different aircraft, fin & rudder, too!).
In order to turn it into something “more Japanese” I tried to graft a cowling plus engine of a Hasegawa Mitsubishi A6M 'Zero' onto the fuselage (the BMW 801 is VERY bulky on the slender Bf 109 airframe!), which worked well and yields a more aerodynamic look. The propeller was taken OOB from the Bf 109X, but a metal axis added so that it can spin freely.
Otherwise not much was changed – I just added an antenna mast, a head protection in the cockpit, the wing cannons with bulges on the wings’ undersides and scratched exhaust stubs and a carburetor intake.
Painting and markings:
The livery is a mix of styles: the paint scheme is a mix of a scheme for an early IJA Ki-27 fighter, with an all-grey fuselage and lower sides and camouflaged upper wing surfaces in green and brown. AFAIK many Manchukuo Air Force aircraft were simply painted all-grey, but I found that to be too simple, and there were a few Ki-46 that carried green blotches, probably the former Japanese paint scheme with overpainted roundels.
For the wing colors I went for Khaki (Humbrol 26) and Army Green (Humbrol 102), but the greenish-grey basic color for the rest was tricky. You find very contradictive information concerning this IJA tone, and even more confusing representations in source material - best modeler's bet might IMHO be Gunze's #128, but that's not available around here, so I went for a hand-made replacement.
Replacement recommendation is basically Sky "Type S" a.k.a. Humbrol 90, but this tones is IMHO much too bright - it's rather a dull, greenish grey, like a very light FAA Slate Grey. So I mixed an individual tone from Modelmaster 2077 (RLM 63; Hellgrau), 97 (Egg shell; which is more yellow-ish than 90 but very similar) and a bit of Humbrol 224 (Cockpit Green).
All interior surfaces were painted in Humbrol 78, with some dry-brushed 120 on top. The spinner was painted in simple black, while the propeller blades received a typical Japanese red primer finish with Humbrol 160.
After basic painting the kit received a light black ink wash in order to emphasize the kit's engraved panel lines, as well as some dry painting to highlight single panels. An overall dry painting with light grey added some weathering effects, and finally some exhaust and gun soot stains with grinded graphite were added.
Markings come from an Authentic Decals Ki-27 aftermarket decal sheet, just the 2nd Hikotai's emblem on the fin was improvised, based on illustrations.

Having killed my previous stomp box I felt the need to go out and get another. I've always liked Zoom gear and the B2 seems like it's got all the features I need. Bloody difficult to have a bash with it tonight though. Everyone went to bed early and one thing you can't do with a bass is be quiet. If only I hadn't trashed my headphones all them years ago....
My grandfather (more like my dad)passed away just over 2 years ago. Just before he passed away he gave me all of his WWII memorabilia including a scrap book of photos from the days he was serving amongst the great men of the US Pacific Fleet.
The scrapbook is deteriorating rather rapidly, so I am backing everything up digitally. I'll share some of the more interesting photos as I back them up.
War is a terrible thing, and to see the things these soldiers saw on a daily basis, must have been pure hell (on both sides). These photos help me to keep that in perspective. More over it reminds me of the sacrafice that such great men made to keep the world in order.

My Grandfather was one of the greatest men I ever met, and this is one of the last ties I have to his memory. Any rudeness, and I'll hide the set.
A little about my Grandfather... Honest and true in every aspect of his life. He was married to my grandmother for over 50 years before he passed away, and never once cursed in her presence (even when they had disagreements).
My family is a bit broken as my father left my mother when I was only a small child. My teenage years weren't that much better... I was a rebel without a cause, and when everyone else was giving up on me, my Grandfather is the one who didn't. I owe him everything. I've made good on promises I made to him to make the most of my life. And even though he's not here to guide me when I step out of line, I still remember his base rules...
1.) Never lie. Do as you say. Say as you do.
2.) Work hard and take pride in what you do.
3.) Realize that the world can live without you, but you can not live without the world.
4.) Do not make ripples within your family such that it effects their lives (a.k.a. lose the drama).
5.) Love and cherish your wife (and children) like there is no tomorrow.
6.) Hold strong to your beliefs, but never wish for war as a source of resolution.

This is the underside of one of our crop, which I set on the trunk of my car for a distracted moment, then realized I could make something of this shot, just sitting there as it was.
I call this "Shitake on Rolling Wave", aka "Fungus on Fender"
I started with my photo of the breaker finishing one of his dance moves.
The image on the ground is one i took of two women crawling on the floor for a shoot. i used the polar coordinates on that image and blended it using the various techniques learnt. I used one of the watercolour effects we got in the bonus section and some light renders on it as well as zoom effect. I used topaz to bring in a ghost effect on it and just used some of it. I used another picture i had taken of a band with their lights and used that as at a low opacity to help as extra subtle lighting points through it all. I added a texture layer that i took of a frozen buddle with some stones and applied that as well! Finished with one of the frames from the bonus section
