mixed media in Moleskine

Illustrated journal entry of a leaf from our silver maple. I played with the background, including painting a fallen leaf with gesso and stamping over a wash. I just drew the leaf, first in graphite then pen. Then I added watercolor pencil.

Realised on the weekend that I joined Every Day Matters a few weeks after Easter a few years ago... In fact it was only TWO years ago – can you believe it! And Easter must have been early that year... So I am a few weeks late...but still... It is worth a pause.... as joining EDM has made such a HUGE impact on my sketching!

So to celebrate joining EDM and starting to share my sketches with the world I have re-visited the first EDM challenge that I did. The original is here.

I felt a little bit of pressure that this sketch had to be be so much better than the first – whether it is or not there are differences – one is that I no longer care so much if the sketch comes out perfectly (because I know that my circles will never be perfect) and the other is that I feel the need all the time to design the page (often over design the page... But still the compositional part of my brain is always ticking!) and back then I wasn’t so obsessed with boxes around everything. But most importantly, because now I don’t worry about perfection so much and I develop the whole page not just the single sketch, I have heaps MORE fun!!

Anyway – a big thanks to everyone who has done so much to inspire and encourage me for the last two years – for all your comments (which I never have time to reply to or often to visit your sites) and for all those that come to visit and never comment – thanks for looking – I often wonder who you are but I know that each view number is a real person who is interested enough to look at my ‘scribbles” So thanks....

Oh dear... I AM rambling tonight!

I'm smiling to myself as I sketch these boots. I wore them to my watercolor class recently, because I needed something comfortable to patrol the room during an intensive and active series of timed drills that I assigned to my students. One student said, "From now on, if I see you wearing those boots I'm going to run the other way!" I'm happy to report that everyone survived and actually outdid themselves.

EDM1 Draw a shoe ! I had great fun with this one. It's Saturday so I had time to spend on the drawing. A patent black, fairly high heel work shoe, but it has a really solid grip underneath so I can wear it comfortably. Idecided to go for a more formal look for the style of this page

When I was drawing this, I realised that is is so very similar to the 31 May drawing I did last year - my passport stamps www.flickr.com/photos/31752495@N03/3578724045/in/set-7215...

12x16 ' Watercolor. 140 lb. Kilamanjaro block. EDM challenge #242 was to draw your tzatchke (kitch, knick-knacks). These two objects are owned by my daughter, as she is becoming quite a collector of things. I've looked at these things on several occasions when considering still life objects from around the house but never actually drew or painted them. This challenge gave me that opportunity.

I chose this challenge as our power was out for 3 or 4 hours one evening this week and we had candles and flashlights in action.

Not too pleased with it, but Danny Gregory says that if you don't like a line go back and draw over it. So I did and the result is what we can call "expressive!" ... sigh ..
