My first profession was a newspaper photographer and, later, newspaper writer, editor, and publisher. Mostly for my hometown newspapers, the morning Texarkana Gazette and the afternoon Texarkana Daily News, the six-day daily Hope Star, and my own newspaper in Hope, the twice-weekly Hope Express. After I sold the Express, our family moved to Little Rock and I spent five years as a newsman with the Associated Press bureau there. While in Hope and Texarkana, I took thousands of photos, mostly with my Nikon cameras, mostly with Kodak Tri-X film that I pushed to 800 ASA in my darkroom. Many of these black-and-white photos on my Flickr account are from my newspaper days from 1973-1984. I often lacked the time to trim my negatives and put them in marked and dated glassine sleeves like I should have. As a result, I cannot accurately date these photos, for the most part, beyond the 1973-1984 time frame (more later than earlier). Collectively, the pictures tell a story of small-town life in southwest Arkansas and, to a lesser extent, northeast Texas.
