Designer Fairytale Beast has been fully deboxed, and is posed free standing alone. He has a custom body, but has the same level of articulation as the Disney Prince dolls. He is very stable free standing on his large flat feet. As the sunlight was dim, flash was used in most of these photos.

Designer Fairytale Belle has been fully deboxed, and is posed standing alone, supported by the built in doll stand in the display case. As the sunlight was dim, flash was used in all these photos. Her long side curls got in the way of photographing her face closeup from the side, so I draped them over her shoulders for some of those shots.

Then I started unpacked the other doll boxes, one by one, and looked at their CoA. The next was Jasmine and Aladdin, who were also #012. Then Belle and the Beast, then Ariel and Eric. Finally the last one I uncovered was Snow White. I was very shocked that its number was not #012, but #4508! It was clear that this was a mistake by the Disney Store, and that this Snow White set was never meant to be part of the pre-orders. However, the curious thing is that the price sticker on the Snow White set's cover sleeve showed the pre-order price of $649.75, the same as that of the other doll sets.

I next picked one of the doll boxes, and started to unpack it. It turned out to be the Rapunzel and Flynn set. After I took it out of the carton, I slipped off the cardboard cover sleeve, and turned it around to look at the Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) at the back. It was #012 of 6000! This is by far the lowest LE number that I have ever gotten. Plus 12 is a very cool number on its own, and is also exactly 1/500 of the edition size.

I was very anxious to see what the edition number really was. First step was to open up the shipping carton. Inside was the five doll sets, each in their own carton. The two sets at the ends were also covered in bubble wrap. Included in the side were the five DFDC gift bags, and the packing slip.

The original shipping label, from the manufacturer to the Disney Store warehouse. From previous experience with LE pre-orders, the Carton #00008 meant that I had a VERY low edition (serial) number. There might be an offset from this, so it might not be exactly 8, but it should be very close to that. My heart started pounding at this point.

The shipping carton was very large and heavy. It was 42'' x 18'' x 8'' and weighed 28 pounds. It came from the Disney Store warehouse in Memphis, Tennesse, from where the DS ships almost all their merchandise.

My pre-order for the Disney Fairytale Designer Collection (DFDC) Doll Set just arrived at my home today. It consists of all five doll couples in the collection, in one very large shipping box. I will show the entire set during the process of unpacking them from the shipping cartons, and showing the dolls themselves in their display cases. I will not debox any of these dolls. I have been deboxing ''spares'' of these dolls, as they were released once every two weeks, since August 20, 2013. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the Ariel and Eric set today at the store raffle, so will order my spare set tonight online. I had pre-ordered this collectioin at the D23 Expo on August 9, 2013.

My first surprise is that I got a very low edition number for the set, only #12 of 6000! The second surprise is that all the dolls but Snow White and the Prince had this low number. The Snow White set unfortunately was #4508 of 6000. I will certainly contact the Disney Store Guest Services to see what can be done about this discrepancy.

They are secured to the built in doll stands and the cardboard backing and plastic spacers by wires, rubber bands and plastic tabs. Then the clear acrylic cover is lifted off the base. In this case I had considerable difficulty freeing the cover from the base. The tabs under the base wouldn't let go of the cover, no matter what I did, until I turned the box upside down and fiddled with the tabs while I jiggled the cover. In the process Belle's hair got a bit messy, but her hair wasn't that neat to begin with, so i smoothed it a bit before taking photos of the set uncovered.

The plastic spacer is then removed from the backs of the two dolls. The next step is to free the dolls from the built in doll stands.

The cardboard backing has been cut open to reveal the ends of the various fasteners used to secure the dolls and plastic spacers to the backing. Then the large spacer is freed from the backing, and the backing is laid down flat, revealing the backs of the dolls, who are still attached to the spacer, the doll stands, and the bottom of the backing. Next the backing is cut off from the base of the display stand. The bottom of the backing is still stuck to the base with double stick tape. The backing, with the Certificate of Authenticity attached, is put away inside of the acrylic top of the case.

*Historical Edition: Origin Story of Submariner

Published by O Globo, Brazil 1940

Among the earliest International publishing's of Timely Comics world-wide.

Included in these 12 Historical appearances are the 1st Appearances of the Human Torch, Submariner and Ka-Zar and the Origin Story of Submariner and the 1st Human Torch VS Submariner as well as Submariner Attacks New York.

These are among the rarest International Editions in Global History some of these editions there are less then 5 known copies known to exist.

Year one of Gibi Mensal was published in the series Gibi Globo which was a Journal format first published by O Globo and once per month in 1940 they produced a Mensal.

The first 12 editions # corresponded with the Journal editon #'s.

You may not see a collection such as this again, these are extremely rare and #100, #116, and #126 belong to a friend of ours.

All the Timely Editions are from our families Legacy collection and most of them are among the best known examples that exist.

Gibi Mensal Series 1941-1952 has 143 Editions.

These 12 pre-dated the series and were only produced in 1940.

Fairytale Designer Eric has been fully deboxed, and is posed free standing. Photographed in natural light.

I've finally decided to watermark all my photos that I upload to Flickr, from now on. I'm getting tired of seeing my photos used without my permission to sell other people's merchandise on eBay, especially for LE items. So my name on my photos will hopefully help deter people from doing that in the future.

Eric has the Classic Disney Prince body, but a unique head sculpt. He has ivory colored satin shirt, with rolled up long sleeves. His rolled up sleeves are sewn in that position, and has considerable fraying from the inside of the cuffs. It should be easy to free the cuffs, and roll down the sleeves. However, they don't look like they are full length, and would stop short of his wrists. He has navy blue pants, wide red sash with a separate belt over it. He has dark blue painted on underpants, matching the color of his pants. He has black boots that are a little more realistic that the usual Disney Prince footwear. His edition number and size are stamped on his back.

I just received my second Ariel and Eric Doll set, that I ordered online last Wednesday, October 16, 2013. It is #1145 of 6000. At first look, my new set looks almost perfect, with a Ariel in a better pose, her eyelashes more even, and the collar neater than in my #12 pre-ordered set. It almost seems a shame to debox the dolls, rather leaving them as is, but I need to free them from all the packing material, so they can be posed with other dolls, and when reboxed, be able to be viewed from all angles.

I next picked one of the doll boxes, and started to unpack it. It turned out to be the Rapunzel and Flynn set. After I took it out of the carton, I slipped off the cardboard cover sleeve, and turned it around to look at the Certificate of Authenticity at the back.

I will certainly contact the Disney Store Guest Services to see what can be done about this discrepancy.

same as the other one, but with different lighting. IDK, it's 3 3:30 at night, I'm too tired to make decisions.

I’m basically an easy-going guy, but there are a few things that really annoy me: Charmin bath tissue commercials, pop songs longer than 4 minutes, and, most of all, misidentifying the seated guy in the huge sculpture group, Glory of Commerce, at Grand Central Terminal.

Everything I’ve found, whether in print or online, refers to Glory of Commerce as depicting Mercury, Minerva, and Hercules. Mercury and Minerva, for sure, but Hercules? Surely not!

I don’t know where this case of mistaken identity originated, but I suspect there is an urtext from sometime in the last 17 years from whence this case of mistaken identity originated and spread. I pick that time frame, as it corresponds to the popularization of the World Wide Web, which, although a wonderful development, also makes it easy to spread questionable or inaccurate information.

Hercules is the man, according to my 2002 editon of Michelin the Green Guide New York City. Likewise, every web article or post that mentions the subject of the sculpture. Here, for example, is the relevant section of Wikipedia’s article on Grand Central:

"Outside the station, the clock in front of the Grand Central facade facing 42nd Street contains the world’s largest example of Tiffany glass and is surrounded by sculptures carved by the John Donnelly Company of Minerva, Hercules, and Mercury and designed by French sculptor Jules-Felix Coutan. At the time of its unveiling (1914) this trio considered to be the largest sculptural group in the world. It was 48 feet (14.6 m) high, the clock in the center having a circumference of 13 feet (4 m)."

Those two sentences are enlightening and entirely correct, except for that one name, Hercules. Hercules it ain’t.

How can I be so sure? Most figures of mythology has one or more iconographic attributes. What are these attributes for Hercules?

Hercules is the Roman name for the Greek demigod Heracles. From classical times onward, Hercules has been associated with two iconographic attributes: His lion skin and his club. The lion skin was a trophy he carried after killing the dreaded Nemean lion.

In almost all depictions of Hercules, whether in sculpture, painting, or mosaic, we see him with the skinned lion over his shoulders or arm, or wearing it as a sort of hellenistic hoodie, with the lion’s head and mouth covering Hercules’ scalp. In addition, he’s aways shown carying, or in proximity to, his club, a huge, rusticated Peloponnesian Slugger.

So let’s take a close look at the photo I took last Saturday of the alleged Hercules at the Grand Central scupture and look for the lion skin and club.

First of all, you’ll notice, not a club in sight. So much for that one. Now if you look carefully at what this fellow has over his right thigh and covering his naughty bits, I concede that it does look a bit hairy around the edges and might be a piece of some sort of animal skin… but it could also just be the unraveled edges of a woven rug or even a wooly lambskin. In any event, it certainly has no trace of lion parts… and anyway, Hercules didn’t use the skin to hide his schmeckle; he carried or wore it on his head.

Also, in the words of this observant Flickr photographer, this is seriously the scrawniest depiction of Hercules I have ever seen. He’s right on. Hercules was basically supposed to be the strongest semi-mortal on the planet, and is always depicted with a bodybuilder’s physique.

So now that I’ve established that the figure is not Hercules, who exactly is it?

Well, let’s look again at the photo. Notice that we see that Mr. I’m-Not-Hercules is holding a hammer in his right hand. And not just a 20-ounce Stanley from Home Depot, but a honking big forging hammer. And what do we see behind his right calf but an anvil! So this guy is somesort of blacksmith.

Well, who, in classical mythology, is a blacksmith? That would be Vulcan, the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Hephaestus, who was the Olympian in charge of, inter alia, technology, blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, and metallurgy.

Notice that on his side of the sculpture group there are other objects that make sense in the context of Hephaestus/Vulcan. The anchor and gear, symbols of commerce and industry of the time, are both items that require casting, forging, machining, etc… all technologies that are within the ambit of Vulcan’s patronage. Likewise, the sickle in Vulcan’s left hand is another product of blacksmithing.

(By the way, just because Vulcan holds a hammer in one hand and a sickle in the other, don’t get the idea that sculptor, M. Coutan, was some kind of Commie. The Soviet Union was still several years away, and the sickle simply ties Vulcan to the stalks of wheat, representing midwest grain arriving at Grand Central via Commodore Vanderbilt’s New York Central Railroad.)

So just to summize, the iconography of the figure on the north side of Glory of Commerce is all about blacksmithing, metalworking, craftsmanship, technology… so this guy must be Vulcan, and not Hercules.

Let’s hope this post can start moving things in the right direction in correcting this case of mistaken identity.

Belle and the Beast are both fully deboxed. They are placed back on the display stand, with the Beast's doll stand is turned 90 degrees counterclockwise from the original position, so he is facing the same direction as Belle. I also place his hand on Belle's waist. They look much better now as a couple.

First look at my Belle and the Beast Doll Set, part of the Disney Fairytale Designer Collection. Purchased from my local Disney Store through the raffle process on release day, October 1, 2013. There were 28 doll sets available, and easily three times that many people who entered. I was very lucky in that I was the next to last person to be chosen.
