“Some days in late August at home are like this, the air thin and eager like this, with something in it sad and nostalgic and familiar...”

The garden ghost, the Green Lynx Spider is not harmful to humans but is a hunter of pesty insects. This one eagerly waits for the next insect to come to the red Celosia Cristata, or Cockscomb. Did you know that the Green Lynx Spider is a great jumping spider and can also spit venom almost 8 inches, which is no harm to humans.

To Prologue of the Story "The Doors"

♫♫VNV Nation - Space & Time♫♫

Amidst the ethereal glow, she glided silently through the maze realm. Mirrored floors shimmered beneath her feet, creating an illusion of floating in an endless expanse. The bright neon flashes cast reflections that distorted space and time, creating a surreal atmosphere. The currents of the vortex seemed to slow down, almost coming to a standstill, before suddenly accelerating and merging into a blurred, unified canvas.

Her gaze drifted across an infinite array of shimmering doors, each a portal to a realm unknown. Within each threshold lay a hidden world, a tapestry woven with untold stories.

As one door closes, sealed by the tapestry of time, another would beckon, whispering promises of new wonderful encounters and journeys.

However, not all doors are meant to be opened. Not everyone eagerly awaits your arrival, not every door holds the promise of warmth and comfort. Some doors beckon you to run away, to leave them firmly closed behind you without a second glance.

In silence, she continued her mesmerizing journey, trusting her intuition to guide her to the Door meant for her. A door that would finally grant her weary soul a sense of belonging, after years of wandering through the labyrinthine mirror maze of time.

Das Fassungsvermögen des Amphiteaters entsprach mit rund 10.000 Plätzen in etwa der Einwohnerzahl der Stadt.

Large public events, such as fights in the amphitheatre and chariot races in the circus, were by far the most popular form of entertainment for the masses in antiquity. The large amphitheatres were regularly filled with spectators eager to see people and animals fighting in the arena.

We showed up around 3pm on the 24th and the museum was already about to close. I think everyone's eager to go home and spend Christmas Eve with their families.

I stepped out the door this afternoon and my little friend (this is the one I saved from being trapped in the house) seemed eager to show me his/her dinner find. Yummy for a magpie-robin, I guess.

So far this winter in the Ottawa, Ontario region we have been blessed (says I--Dad, not so much) with 242cm (95+inches) of snow, already above, and well on our way to blowing out, our seasonal average of 223cm., though we'll probably get nowhere near the record set in 1970-71 of 444cm.

Bring it on!

(Sad news about the juvenile moose that's been haunting our area for the past few weeks: we found it dead this morning, apparently of starvation as it looked emaciated and there was no sign of predation, up on the Prescott-Russell Trail near our house. From the evidence, the poor thing had dragged itself the last few meters to it's final resting spot before tucking it's legs alongside itself and laying it's big brown head back over one shoulder. It was a touching sight, and somewhat surreal, but it would serve no purpose, and be in our opinion disrespectful, to post the photo Dad took of me warily inspecting the remains, which couldn't be more than two days old because we were along here Thursday afternoon.

So anyway, my love of all this snow is tempered by the fact that it is not a blessing for every creature around.)

View of Faber Castel Mansion in the gardens of Faber-Castell Castle during the Christmas market "Winter Dreams", Stein near Nuremberg, Franconia (Bavaria), Germany

Some background information:

Being held already in mid-November, the annual pre-Christmas fair "Winter Dreams" at Faber Castell Castle in Stein near Nuremberg is definitely the earliest Christmas market in our region. It takes place both in the gardens and the interiors of Faber Castell Castle that is sometimes also called "pencil castle", because it’s the ancestral seat of the noble family von Faber-Castell, which gained wealth by the manufacturing of pencils.

From 1843 to 1846, the so-called Old Castle was designed and built in the Neo-Renaissance style by the architect Friedrich Bürklein for Lothar von Faber. In 1903, the Faber-Castell family also commissioned the construction of the New Castle based on plans by Theodor von Kramer in the style of German Romanesque architecture. The two parts are connected by an elaborately structured, five-storey tower through which the gate passage runs.

The family used to live in the castle until 1939, when it was confiscated by the Wehrmacht. After the end of World War II American occupation troops moved into the building. But when the famous Nuremberg Trials had begun in 1948, the castle was converted into a sleeping accommodation for the many international journalists, who reported on the court proceedings. In 1953, the last Americans left the castle and it was returned to the family, who did not move back in themselves. After decades of neglect, Anton-Wolfgang Count von Faber-Castell initiated the renovation and inventorying of the castle, and since 1986 the complex has once again been used for events.

In the last few years the castle was fully renovated. It is now used as a place of different events, such as the Christmas market. One weekend a month Faber Castell Castle also opens its doors for visitors, who are interested in the interior of the building. We already grabbed this chance and were quite surprised about its interesting and richly ornamented art noveau décor with lots of marble used.

The mansion is part of the historic complex surrounding Faber-Castell Castle. It was built for Wilhelm von Faber-Castell and is located directly in the castle gardens, which originally covered around 30 hectares and were laid out in the 19th century as an English-style landscape garden. The mansion predates the main castle and originally served as the representative residence of the Faber-Castell family. However, today, the building is used as an office space rather than a family residence.

With its headquarters and huge production sheds in the immediate vicinity of the castle, Faber-Castell is the biggest pencil manufacturing company around the world. In altogether 14 production centres it employs a staff of 7,000 on a global scale. Founded already in 1761 by the cabinet maker Kaspar Faber, whose grandson Lothar was ennobled in 1888, the company soon took off, favoured by the beginning industrial revolution.

In 1900, after the marriage of Lothar von Faber’s granddaughter baroness Ottilie von Faber with count Alexander von Castell-Ruedenhausen, the enterprise was renamed Faber-Castell. At that time also a new logo was implemented, the "jousting knights", which is still the company’s logo at the present day. In 1901 Alexander was granted the hereditary title of prince as well as count von Faber-Castell by Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria. Nowadays the family continues to be ranked with the reigning dynasties of Europe and belongs to the German high nobility.

A Merry Christmas 2025 to all of you! Have a great festive season together with your families and friends!

... every two months, my Provincial Health Authority of Messina (Sicily) sends me on a mission for three days (from Taormina) to the Civil Hospital of Lipari, located in via Saint Anne ... In my spare time, free from commitments of work, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion; the photographs I present here were all taken in February of this year 2022; I took photos according to the dictates of street photography, I made some portraits, having always met people in the hand and very willing to let themselves be photographed (maybe ... that the islanders are open-minded, eager and used to communicate with strangers ..?!), some portraits were made of people intent on their work, some fishermen were intent on repairing their nets, a lady showed me one of her beautiful work, a blanket she made with knitting needles , hanging on her balcony (it reminded me of the shawls my grandmother made, also made with hand knitting needles); all the photos were taken in the city of Lipari, except three, taken in the dark in the port of Milazzo, the port of departure and arrival with hydrofoils (but there is also the ship) for the Aeolian Islands.

The silver-washed fritillary (Argynnis paphia, in German "Kaisermantel" is a beautiful butterfly with a wingspan of 55–70 mm. It occurs in wide parts of Eurasia and Northern Africa. In Germany, it has been nominated the "butterfly of the year 2022."

Just the day before the start of my vacation I got my new Nikon Z9. I just had time to go through the manual for the first time. I was eager to test the new possibilities of autofocus also in the macro area (with the Micro-Nikkor 105/2.8 for Z-mount). The first photo walk was to the Kötschachtal near Bad Gastein (Salzburg, Austria) where I was hoping to find some butterflies. The number of insects has decreased significantly in recent years and large butterflies can only be found in a few selected places.

The conditions were challenging (for autofocus) as it was a little windy and the flowers were constantly shaking. I used the autofocus setting "3D tracking" on the Z9. I needed some practice to get the hang of it, but now I am very happy with the result. The percentage of successful photos with the focus point in the right place was significantly higher than I could previously achieve with the D850. Here is an album with more photos of this insect.
