CrossFit Resilience Comp 2/13

vence - 13.03.2013

When I came along this building yesterday on my cycling tour I planed to come back with the RX. I like this kind of architecture because it's clear and classical. Unfortunately the building is in a poor condition so I thought that it's abandoned. Today I realized that it's the vital office of the DYNAMIC company in vence. So it was hard for me to get this single shot because there is a fence around the area which fixes the distance of the shot, and I wasn't keen to be identified as a spy. So I checked out this area and situated myself at a bus stop in front of the building. I gave me just a single shot and so the result here is what I could reach. Because of the blue sky I decided to make it in B&W and voila, here it is. For this one I wished to have a 24mm lens or something like this. If so I would have given the building a bit more space to breath, but for this moment I must make peace with the result here. Folks, I wish you a nice evening.

Dynamic. J93968 is the model number. I do not own this yet! They want $100 for it. I don't have the room! Yet! Maybe I should toss out the dining room table! It's nearly big enough to be a dining room table! Not a treadle sadly.

A very unusual passing shot of preserved Stanier ‘Princess Coronation’ class Pacific No.46233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’, passing Biggleswade with the final leg of the Railway Touring Company’s ‘Great Britain VII’ railtour (York-London Kings Cross) on 4th May 2014. Evening light was very low around this time, so a capture at 1/5 exposure seemed like a good way to emphasise the ‘Duchess’s’ power and speed even if the tour was ambling along the Down Slow.

Celebrating Dr. E's LAw of Moving Dimensions ^& Dynamic Dimensions Theory dx4/dt=ic which derives from Homer's Odyssey! "Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could not save his men, for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating the cattle of the Sun-god Hyperion; so the god prevented them from ever reaching home. Tell me, too, about all these things, O daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source you may know them." --Homer's Odyssey! herosodysseyphysics.wordpress.com

Drove 60 miles down a rocky dirt road for these shots and camped overnight to shoot this Torweap / Tuweep sunrise! Toroweap, a Paiute terms,"dry or barren valley." And it was! I slept five feet from the edge all night, as I was shooting night shots of a dead tree on the edge, with the canyon and silvered river down below.

Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!

And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!

The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)

Some (almost) final edits for my Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

The Carnavale in Venice lasts 11 days; the first Saturday of the Carnavale was a total washout. On the first Sunday (3 Feb 2013) my good friend Vickie and I went into Venice - what a gorgeous day! Weekends tend to be very crowded but it was still fun to get back to Venice - one of my favorite places - I feel so at home there. This set contains people I shot on the first Sunday - mostly around San Marco's Plaza - what a great day - and it got better after that!

... enough said.

So many of the photos from this shoot have been scrapped. It's impossible to focus correctly in the dark when it's like this. So rather disappointed about the outcome, but at least got a couple of okay shots.

Another fair Thai maiden using yo-yos to lighten up the atmosphere in the piazza outside the main theatre at the Phuket FantaSea. Of course, this was not an act as such, just a lovely Thai lass playing with these two yo yos, smiling sweetly at visitors to welcome them to the show, and to pose with them if requested. The show itself is called Fantasy of a Kingdom, and is one of a kind- you can’t really say you have been to Phuket unless you have been to the Fantasea. I have spoken about the main show earlier in this album (see previous pictures) so I will spare you the details. Photography inside the show venue is of course strictly prohibited and you are forced to check in any kinds of recording equipment, including cellphones before you enter the auditorium. The "For Sale" Miniseries

"Dynamic Calm" is the ninth photo in a miniseries that I recently started. Over the next few weeks, I'll be covering all of my photographs available as prints on my website. I'll be uploading one every weekday (except Friday), as usual, but you'll find a lot more information on the photographs themselves - I might sneak in a few tutorials, quick tips, etc. It'll be great for new and old photographers alike - If you have any friends who might be interested, be sure to let them know! I'll be updating everything on my blog as well as my other social networks, so if you would prefer to follow it there, just click on one of the links above. :)

About "Dynamic Calm"

"Dynamic Calm" was taken from the Warners Bay foreshore. Warners Bay is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, and is located 15 kilometres from Newcastle's central business district on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie. It was named after Jonathan Warner, who settled the area. The population of Warners Bay was 7,009 as at the 2006 census, with in excess of 615 businesses operating in the area.

Taking "Dynamic Calm"

Nikon D90 | Sigma 10-20mm

1 min 43 sec | f/13 | ISO100 | 11.5mm

Like Thursday's upload, I took this shot after attempting a sunset at Dudley Beach (unfortunately the location didn't quite work out). I saw that the clouds were starting to turn, so I quickly drove back to the Warners Bay Foreshore. Unfortunately most of the colour in the clouds had dissipated by the time I arrived, but nevertheless I hurriedly set up the tripod and composed this shot. Originally I went for a fairly standard shot (in terms of shutter speed), but I felt the slight ripples in the water were too distracting. So I grabbed the trusty ND filter, popped it on the end of my Sigma 10-20mm lens, and exposed for just over a minute and a half to get this shot.

Processing "Dynamic Calm"

Not much was wrong with this image. The left hand side was a little dark, so I used Adobe Camera Raw's graduated effect filter sideways (horizontally?), to lighten up that portion of the photo. I cooled the image down slightly, but then decided to apply a warming filter in Photoshop (Photoshop's warming filter produces a different effect compared to simply increasing the white balance temperature in Adobe Camera Raw). I had to clone out a few dust bunnies in the corners, and also one stray stick in the foreground which I was finding distracting. What are your thoughts on small cloning fixes like that? Leave a comment! :)

Enjoy!

Two of Heyside Cricket Club's first XI celebrate at Little Hey Street a thumping 70-run victory over Pennine League Premiership rivals Norden in the last Tanner Cup Final. Originally a Saddleworth & District League knockout competition, the Tanner Cup is ending because of the demise, after just two seasons, of the Pennine League. Its member clubs are dispersing to other leagues, notably the Greater Manchester League.

Put in, Heyside, who won a coin toss for the right to stage the showpiece, made a solid start. Man of the match Declan Wilkinson (63) and captain Ryan Barnes (46) added 99 for the first wicket. Professional Bilal Khiljee (49) and Max Power (33 not out) kept up the momentum, though a flurry of late wickets prevented Heyside reaching the 250 they had threatened. Replying, Norden, vying with leaders Walsden for the Premiership title, slumped to 52-5. Greg Butterworth (38) and Simon North (21) merely delayed the inevitable by putting on 50 for the sixth wicket.

Wilkinson, who also took 3-22, was unable to receive his man of the match award at the presentation ceremony in front of the dressing rooms. Late in the Norden innings, he dislocated a shoulder in attempting to prevent a boundary. Despite the efforts on a medic, Wilkinson had to go to hospital for treatment.

Match statistics:

Admission: £3. Programme: eight pages (w/a). Attendance: 250. Norden won the toss and elected to field. Heyside 220-9 off 50 overs (Declan Wilkinson 63, Bilal Khiljee 49, Ryan Barnes 46, Max Power 33 not out, Dominic Humphreys 4-44, Hashum Malik 3-50) beat by 70 runs Norden 150 off 41.1 overs (Greg Butterworth 38, Simon North 21, Declan Wilkinson 3-22, Bilal Khiljee 2-21, Scott Bloor 2-28). Umpires: Tim Bartley and Ian Marland.

Maybe not so dynamic but definitely a duo.

The guts of the remote to a Garmin GPS, which suddenly stopped working. New batteries were of no help, and it didn't seem worth pestering their support department when I have a perfectly good screwdriver.

The button contacts are on the other face. Notable here are the backlight LEDs mounted active face down in holes in the board, the IR transmitter at the left end, and the contacts to the battery compartment visible just to the left of the only chip on the board.
