Son of the late Paul and Agatha (née Dawkins) Dyer (2004 National Memorial (Silver Cross Mother) of St. Laurent, Quebec. Brother of Carolyn. He enrolled with the Militia's 48th Highlanders of Canada as an Infantryman in February 1996 and transferred to the Regular Force in October 1997. After completing Battle School, Cpl Dyer was posted to 3 PPCLI in the spring of 1998, where he served as a Rifleman and deployed with 3 PPCLI on Operation Palladium to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2000. A plaque bearing the names of Sgt. Marc Léger, Cpl. Ainsworth Dyer, Pte. Richard Green and Pte Nathan Smith lies on a floodlit memorial beside the Canadian headquarters at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Corporal Dyer was commemorated in February, 2003 on the Rakkasan Memorial Wall at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Corporal Dyer died as a result of a friendly fire incident on April 17, 2002 while serving in Afghanistan.

One of my best friends, Amanda, and I decided to go to Wal-mart to pick up a Tye-Dye kit and some white t-shirts. Stupidly, we decided against using the gloves that the kit provided not realizing that it would die our hands for a few days.

Site Based Liaison Angela Blier organized a Community Design Charrette at Dyer Elementary School in February 2013. Angela visited every class prior to the Charrette, and gathered valuable feedback from the students on what they'd like to improve about their playground.
At the Charrette, students, teachers, staff and parents worked together to add copious notes to the school's site plans.
Landscape Architect Sashie Misner worked with the school's Greening Committee to come up with a final plan that addresses their highest priorities. Construction for the project began during the 2013-14 school year.

This week we will dive into the world of lichen dyes. Natural dyes for textiles have been used for a long time in traditional cultures, some going back more than 5,000 years ago. Lichen dyes produce a range of colors, including green, orange, yellow, red, brown, pink, and purple. In some cases the pigment used as dye is already present in the lichen; in these cases, the pigment is extracted from the lichen through boiling. Perhaps the best known case in North America is the wolf lichen, Letharia vulpina (upper left picture), a bright yellow lichen used to dye the Chilkat blankets (upper right picture; a piece housed at the museum in our anthropological collections) made by the Tlingit and other Pacific Northwest indigenous people.
Most lichens used for dyes do not contain pigments. Instead, their chemical substances are converted into pigments using a process called ammonium fermentation, which basically means that the lichen is soaked in ammonia (urine or ammonium carbonate) for several days to weeks. Such lichens include Ochrolechia parella and O. tartarea (cudbear lichens), Roccella tinctoria (dye lichen), and Parmotrema tinctorum (palm ruffle lichen; lower left picture). The scientific names of the latter two indicate that they were known for their use at the time they were formally described for the first time. Roccella tinctoria presumably was used by the ancient Phoenicians (1550 BC to 300 BC). The dye produced by these lichens is called orcein and is derived from orcinol, a common phenolic metabolite in lichens. It produces red-pink to purple-blue colors, which were historically important throughout Europe during the Renaissance. The shade is pH dependent: acidic pH produces red to pink colors and alkalinic pH makes purple to blue colors (lower right picture; from Parmotrema tinctorum). Notably, orcein was also used as a food dye, known as E182 (E121 before 1977).

Mike Hills will present a program on herbal dye plants that he helped Jane Haynes prepare and present to the Herb Society of America Annual Meeting in 2006. Great details and information on the history of plants used for dyeing fabric, leather, basketry, etc. Many of Jane's beautiful plant-dyed samples will be on hand for discussion and observation. Jane has made a study of the colors that can be created from our Arizona garden and native plants, since she moved here in the 1970's. With the aid of mordants, and the proper natural materials, the range of colors available will astound you.
