It's not every day that you find Reboot toys. Also Sin City and X-Men Evolution for that matter. But Rosario Dawson is literally so whitewashed that we did not realize it was a Sin City action figure when we bought it!

BACKSTORY: COMMENTS/ANECDOTES: This was a great day for yardsaling! Multiple community yardsales, the Boy Scout flea market, a church rummage sale, this day had it all. We got a lot of stuff. 3 car-loads! A Russian Cyrillic typewriter. We actually made it through the entire route, surprisingly. We had talked about maybe skipping a section in the middle, but then we went ahead and continued on. Then later, we were like, "Damn, we should have skipped that stuff in the middle, but then we wouldn't have gotten the stripper pole." Trade-offs! Our two goals were met though: we were specifically looking for floor lamps and power strips. By the way, Trump voters price stuff ridiculously.

SUMMARY: Got up around 7:05AM, made it out driving from McDonald's by 7:48 and went out until 2:39PM for a total of 6 hours. Spent $164.24 plus ~$5.03 gas for 58.1 miles of driving (28.7 mpg @ $2.49/G), for a total cost of $169.27. We drove to 48 yard sales, stopping at 18 (38%) of them. We made 65 purchases (115 items not including the power blocks) for a total estimated value of $1,207.61, leading to a profit/savings of $1,038.34. So in essence, we multiplied our $169.27 investment by 6.13X. (Also, if you think about it, the profit counts for even more when you consider that we have to earn $1,183 on the job, pre-tax, in order to take home the $1,038.34 in cash that we saved. How long does $1,038 of disposable income take to earn, vs the 6 hrs we spent here?) Anyway, this works out to a *post-tax* "wage" of $173.06/hr as a couple or $86.53/hr per person.

THE TAKE:

* $20.00: camping stove, Coleman, two burners, 5430B700 (EV:$42.41)

* $20.00: canopy, instant pop-up, Quik Shade, unsure of size, but it is probably around 8x8'. (EV:$49.99). Bought off the guy's back because it was his that he was using for his spot at the flea market, but he didn't have it up and had it in with his stuff as if it was for sale. When we asked how much, he said he'd sell it to us for $20.

The Leica S2. Simply Awesome

A Medium-Format Sensor in a '35mm' Body

By Allan Weitz

Print Close

Leica's surprise announcement of the Leica S2 pretty much blows the bubbles off every other press release coming out of Photokina, or anywhere else in the photo world as of late. Sure, reasonably priced, full-frame DSLRs are cool; but a 37.5-megapixel medium-format sensor that's 56% larger (30x45 mm) than the so-called competition, and in a smaller body no less, is downright awesome.

Ballyhoo aside, the Leica S2 is truly a gorgeous machine. Similar in style to Leica's classic R8/R9 SLR cameras, it is clean looking and understated as compared to all other DSLRs on the market. Buttons, toggles, and switches are minimal, and the menus displayed on the camera's 3' 460,000-dot LCD are as simple as those found on Leica's first DSLR venture, the Module R. The new camera, designed and built in Germany, features an all-metal body that is both dust and waterproof.

While frame-per-second burst-rate figures haven't been released, Leica claims the new camera is twice as fast as Hasselblad's H-series cameras, which depending on the model can capture images at a bit over one frame-per-second.

To compliment the new camera Leica is concurrently introducing seven bayonet-mount S-series lenses that should keep everybody happy. Included in the line-up are a 24mm ultra-wide, 35mm wide, 70mm standard lens, 100mm 'portrait' lens, 120 mm macro, 180mm telephoto, and a 30mm tilt/shift lens. And though autofocus in design (with the exception of the 30 mm tilt/shift), manual focusing with electronic focus-confirmation is also possible with each of the S-series optics. Like the S2 camera body, the new lenses are also water and dustproof.

Aside from a conventional focal-plane shutter in the camera body for wider-aperture lenses, each of the Leica-S optics also contains an internal leaf-shutter to enable high-speed flash sync up to 1/4000th-second.

Images can be captured in a choice of DNG, RAW, and/or JPEG formats onto either CompactFlash or SDHC memory cards. According to Leica you can store up to 400 RAW-format images on a 32GB card. An optional vertical grip that features a second shutter release, control wheel, and space for a second battery will also be available for the new camera. The exact price of the new camera is yet to be announced, but we strongly recommend you start saving up.

Stay tuned for a full-blown test of the Leica S2 in an upcoming newsletter. We don't know about you, but we can't wait.

Decisions made. Cameras arrived. Visa paid off. The learning begins.

As the Olympus is such a magnificent creature, and I have cognitive problems, it's sure to take me the rest of my life get a handle on it. So in order to keep my frustration at a manageable level I also bought the little Panasonic. It will be my go-to camera for when I need a break AND it will be my go-anywhere camera so I don't miss those "Rats! Why don't I have my camera with me" shots.

My sincere gratitude to my flickr friends who gave me suggestions through my long period of indecision. Special appreciation to Staffan and John. But for you two I'd still be changing my mind with each new review.

BUICK MARQUETTE 1930

There is one medium priced car that successfully meets both congested city and open country

motoring needs-it is the Buick built Marquette-rightfully termed by tens of thousands of enthusiastic owners a great performer.

Incorporating in full measure the benefits of Buick's experience in building fine cars, Marquette is the outstanding dollar-for dollar value in its field. Drive Marquette and learn, the minute you take the wheel, why it is meeting such widespread public approval.

Note its bullet-like response to the accelerator-10 to 60 miles an hour in 31 seconds-its abundance of power, its carefree ease os handling, its instant obedience to your every day demand.

Exceptional in performance and operating economy, Marquette also reveals decisive advantages in beauty and riding comfort. Marquette's smartly modeled Bodies by Fisher strike a new note in low-cost motoring luxury.

The upholstery is of the new waterproof, dustproof, wear proof type-shared only by cars of much higher price. A remarkably strong and well balanced chassis-plus spring of unusual length and resiliency-plus

Lovejoy Shock Absorbers front and rear-provide riding qualities and road ability un-approached

by any other car of comparable price. Plan to drive Marquette before buying any car, regardless of price.

The restored McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carsen City on June 26, 2011 -- Virginia and Truckee Railroad #22.

****

From the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum web site.

When the Virginia and Truckee Railroad completed its branch line between Carson City and Minden in 1906, passenger service was provided by a mixed passenger and freight train. It was soon apparent that additional passenger service was desirable, but adding a passenger-only steam train was too expensive. The Virginia and Truckee looked at motorcars as a more cost-effective solution, and in 1910, purchased a 70 foot gas powered McKeen motor car to provide twice-a-day passenger service between Minden and Carson City.

The McKeen Motor Car Company of Omaha, Nebraska, was organized under the sponsorship of E. H. Harriman of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads. It was one of the most successful of the early motor car manufacturers. The cars featured ultramodern steel stressed skin construction, "dustproof" porthole windows, and the distinctive knife-shaped wind-splitter front.

By 1932, passenger traffic on the V&T was declining all over the railroad. The McKeen car was rebuilt in the shops with expanded mail and express space, and placed in service all the way from Reno to Minden, making a round trip once per day. The car final made its last run in September 1945, one of the last unmodified McKeen cars running in the nation. In 1946 the body was sold to become a diner, and later Al's Plumbing Supply office in Carson City. It was donated to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in early 1996. The official unveiling of the restored car was May 9, 2010, one hundred years exactly from the date it was delivered to the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

THE TAKE:

* $20.00: camping stove, Coleman, two burners, 5430B700 (EV:$42.41)

* $15.00: Spencer's Light Up "Dance" Pole. Come on, Spencer's, we know that's a stripper pole. (EV:$138.95)

* $15.00: digital picture frame, 10", Samsung, SPF-107H (EV:$16.22)

Waikiki / Oahu, Hawaii 2011

The restored McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carsen City on June 26, 2011 -- Virginia and Truckee Railroad 22.

****

From the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum web site.

This etching of debauchery called Gin Lane is kind of funny. Especially the lady who is dropping her baby over the stairs. We didn't know about the companion piece, Beer Street, until researching it afterward.

According to the website that is selling the two for $3250, this is the text below:

Gin, cursed Fiend, with Fury fraught,

Makes human Race a Prey.

It enters by a deadly Draught

And steals our Life away.

Virtue and Truth, driv'n to Despair

Its Rage compells to fly,

But cherishes with hellish Care

Theft, Murder, Perjury.

Damned Cup! that on the Vitals preys

That liquid Fire contains,

Which Madness to the heart conveys,

And rolls it thro' the Veins.

How long does $1,038 of disposableincome take to earn, vs the 6 hrs we spent here?) Anyway, this works out to a *post-tax* "wage" of $173.06/hr as a couple or $86.53/hr per person.

Carolyn needed a purse after the one she got for free from Goodwill kind of disintegrated. Rogue had fallen on the floor or something, so that's why she wasn't pictured with the other X-Men Evolution toys. We did not pay $2.00 for the $2.00 finger-thingy, we paid 25 cents. The girl was nice.

We got that Coleman stove just in time for camping season! $20 with 5 propanes! It has fed us well!

Going through someone else's box of abandoned orphan cables was very interesting. We definitely saved some. And I took all his plastic baggies for my own organizing projects, lol.

Third dishrack is AMAZING!!! We'll never go back to just two!

When we asked how much, he said he'd sell it to us for $20.

THE TAKE:

* $20.00: camping stove, Coleman, two burners, 5430B700 (EV:$42.41)

* $20.00: canopy, instant pop-up, Quik Shade, unsure of size, but it is probably around 8x8'. (EV:$49.99). When we asked how much, he said he'd sell it to us for $20.

It really has been a Good Friday! Pardon the pun since it is actually Good Friday and Easter is on Sunday!. You see that?, that's the SONY Xperia Z2. The flagship 4K Waterproof & dustproof phone for Summer 2014. All £750 of it is mine! :-) I did promise you a few months ago I would get one and I did today!. It goes on sale in the shops on 1st May 2014 in the UK. SONY put the release date to 1st May because of a software bug and shortage. But I managed to get a pre-order and all accessories!. I'll do a proper video soon, I am very busy with work at the moment.

The Hiking/Biking/Swimming/Camping kit - More info here

After going hiking WITH the full Canon DSLR outfit, it was clear that taking the Canon and lenses on a full backpacking trip would not be possible. Well unless I wanted an 80 pound pack...

We went on a backpacking trip and I left my camera home, and could not borrow my wife's Lumix DMC-TZ5 (here) because she was using it. And it would have been vulnerable to the rough handing and weather if I brought it.

Later, we went on a cross-country ski trip and I brought my SONY Mavica MVC-CD500 but found that it was a bit bulky, and also vulnerable. I had already decided that the Lumix DMC-TS2 would be a suitable all-purpose camera for times when I wanted to travel light and faced the possibility of exposing the camera to moisture, cold or rough handing.

This kit is very compact, provides reasonable image quality given the abuse the camera is capable of withstanding, and is well rated among such cameras.

I purchased a carry case that holds all the provided camera accessories (listed below), a ultra-light-weight monopod, and a couple different soft cases that can be placed on the belt or hung around the body by a strap. I also bought a few spare batteries. The specs are OK:

~2700 pictures on a 16mb memory card

- HD video (1080i)

- Waterproof down to 10 meters, drop-proof up to 6 feet, and freeze proof down to 10C.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 4.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 2.7-Inch LCD (Blue)

Included with camera:

I'd been using an iPhone 3GS for quite some time, and it was time to move along, for several reasons. So, I planned for when when opportunity would come along, and recently purchased an iPhone 5. For how I use the iPhone, it's a tool, while for some, it's a toy. And frankly, that was my initial impression of the iPhone when it came out. My... how wrong I was!

So while I purchased the 64G model, I received several concessions from AT&T, including a $50 rebate, and I took advantage of the subsidy, which meant I renewed a contract... which also had grandfathered the UNLIMITED data plan. In conjunction with my planned re-sale of the used (in good condition) iPhone 3GS (32GB version), the iPhone 5 cost me very little. However, I have recently learned that Wal-Mart is selling them for $175. Go figure. Kinda' wish I'd known about that before. But, no use crying over spilled milk.

Continuing, when I saw a relative's iPhone 4 in a LifeProof case, and he had shared several stories of how it saved his phone, I determined to investigate, and later purchased the LifeProof frē for iPhone 5, which "is the thinnest, lightest, strongest all-protective case ever created."

Look forward to some underwater pics & movies from it in the days ahead.

The company describes their premiere product thus:

"frē delivers the water-proof, dirt-proof, snow-proof and shock-proof protection you expect from LifeProof, and so much more.

"Every feature has been designed to work seamlessly with your iPhone 5 – touch screen, camera, buttons, microphones and speakers. The incredibly low profile adds a mere 1.5 mm to each edge, and the sleek silhouette showcases your iPhone 5’s already legendary design.

"LifeProof is deeply committed to creating products that excel in every dimension. True to that commitment, we designed frē – the world’s smartest case for the world's smartest phone.

"The Four Proofs:

Water Proof – submergible to 6.6’ (2m) for up to 30 minutes

Dirt Proof – totally sealed against minute dirt & dust ingress

Snow Proof – fully enclosed to keep melting snow, sleet and ice out

Shock Proof – withstands drop impacts from up to 6.6’ (2m)

Design: The thinnest, lightest, toughest, most functional all-protective phone case available

Function: Restriction-free access to all functions, buttons, controls and ports

Profile: Stays true to the iPhone 5’s sleek profile

Aesthetics: Rear window highlights the iPhone’s design and proclaims your Apple allegiance

Optics: CrystalClear double AR-coated optical-glass lens for distortion-free photos and videos

Acoustics: Exclusive ‘Sound Enhancement System’ delivers maximum sound output and clarity

Materials: Crafted from advanced materials for optimal protection, style and durability – never sticks to pockets or collects lint

Technology: Built with everything we knew about protection, plus everything we needed to invent to make it better

In the Box: frē case, cleaning cloth, headphone adaptor and headphone jack cover keeper

Compatibility: Works with all iPhone 5 models and carriers

"Specifications

"EVERY SINGLE CASE WATER TESTED

"To give you the confidence to go everywhere and do everything with your iPhone 5, we water test every case we make. Then, we send it to an independent agent for additional testing, including a second water test on randomly selected cases. Only cases that pass are shipped. At LifeProof, we use our cases everyday for everything, and if we trust ‘em, you can too!

"MEETS OR EXCEEDS THESE SPECIFICATIONS:

"Military Standard 810F-516

MIL STD 810 F is the standard that addresses a broad range of environmental conditions, with MIL STD 810F-516 being the section of the standard that is specific to functional drop. This standard requires that the item can physically and functionally withstand the relatively infrequent, non-repetitive shocks encountered in handling, transportation, and service environments. This may include an assessment of the overall material system integrity for safety purposes in any one or all of the handling, transportation, and service environments.

"IP-68

"IEL 60529 is the standard for Ingress Protection from water and dust for enclosures. IP-68 is the most rigorous classification in this specification. The first characteristic number describes protection from solid foreign objects. An enclosure with a characteristic number of 6 can withstand exposure to circulating talcum powder for 8 hours with no dust ingress after that period. The second characteristic number describes protection against water. An enclosure with a characteristic number of 8 exceeds all other water protection levels and is specified by the manufacturer. For LifeProof, number 8 signifies LifeProof cases will withstand immersion in water to a depth of 2 meters / 6.6 feet for 30 minutes."

When you’re hurtling downhill on a bike or skimming waves under a kite, you need an ultra-wide-angle lens to capture all of the action – especially if you only have one hand and one chance to get everything into your shot. That’s why Olympus fitted the new STYLUS Tough TG-860 with the widest wide-angle lens currently available in the compact camera class (21-105mm*). And more than one shutter release button – so adrenalin junkies can shoot pin-sharp stills, distortion-free selfies and multi-format videos on the fly, glove on or off, with their right hand or left. To free up one hand, a new Sport Holder can strap the camera firmly to a harness. What’s more, a tilting LCD makes it easy to frame selfies and other shots when you’re not in a position to look at the back of the camera. TG-860 owners can control their camera remotely via WiFi from a smartphone, and share geotagged images on social media using the Olympus OI.Share app – from virtually anywhere. The TG-860 certainly qualifies as a go-anywhere camera. It’s waterproof to 15m, shockproof to 2.1m, crushproof to 100kg, dustproof and freeze proof to -10°C.
