A brick with, for British viewers at least, a familiar name. There is a helpful article, published by the Northern Echo, giving a little history of the brick, made by Stanley Brothers and identifying other users of the "trademark" (a manufacturer of bitumen roofing felt and, from 1929, the London Rubber Company). Warning; the Northern Echo page is hopelessly infected with advertisements, all meaningless.
There we have it...

Fun fact: This is actually one of my older designs, flipped upside-down and heavily modified.
Try and guess which one it is! Are you up to the challenge?

Touting many advantages useful in industry, such as being electrically non-conductive, durable, fireproof, etc., this particular material was often used as support panels for electrical control apparatuses, wiring, equipment switches, breaker units, arc insulators, among a multitude of other uses.
The bridge, planned by the French colonial power in 1899-1902 and built mainly by the Vietnamese among numerous victims, is almost 1.7 km long and has only been allowed for mopeds and pedestrians for many years. The traffic dictates, especially during rush hour, the wearing of a mask or a durable device... crossing the bridge on foot is an adventure in every way.
Amaryllis gave me much satisfaction for both beauty, durability of the flowers and even photographically.
So, I planted two further varieties, either than the red one of last year that will soon blossom again.
This is a big and streaked Amaryllis ('Bella Donna' ?) in a deep bright orange...
In this photo can be seen all the stages of flowers growth, from the still closed buds to the full bloom.
I had to hurry up yesterday and last night to sort out some shots as the left flower is soon going to wither. The stamen here were gradually turning from yellow to a brownish tone.
(Notice also: to the left hand side, the orange colour is turning to reddish with the aging of the flower)
It's been a very fortunate case as for few minutes I could have some sun reflections backlighting the flowers.
I think the natural lighting effect is very cool. Few more tests in the next up-loads.

Sheffield Winter Garden is a large temperate glasshouse located in the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It is one of the largest temperate glasshouses to be built in the UK during the last hundred years, and the largest urban glasshouse anywhere in Europe. It is home to more than 2,000 plants from all around the world. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 22 May 2003.
Part of the £120 million Heart of the City regeneration project that has created the Peace Gardens and the £15 million Millennium Galleries, the Winter Garden was designed by Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects and Buro Happold and is some 70 metres (77 yd) long and 21 metres (23 yd) high.
The building has background frost protection to a minimum of 4 degrees Celsius and it is one of the largest Glued Laminated Timber or "Glulam" buildings in the UK (Glulam is made by forming and gluing strips of timber into specific shapes). The wood used is Larch, a durable timber which will, over time, turn a light silvery grey colour. The larch, derived from sustainable forests, requires no preservatives or coatings. This reduces the use of solvents and also avoids the use of chemicals that could harm the plants.
The building has an intelligent Building Management System which controls fans and vents to make sure the plants are cooled in summer and kept warm in winter. The system will "learn" year by year.
The bedding plants are changed five times a year, to give a seasonal change, and all the plants are watered by hose or by watering can, as it is the only way to ensure that all the plants get the correct amount of water.

An attractive and durable plant, Tradescantia pallida ’Purpurea' (Purple Heart) is a popular trailing evergreen perennial noted for its remarkable foliage of narrow, pointed, purple leaves, 2-5 in. long (5-12 cm). Arranged alternately along thick, but fragile, purple stems, the leaves are deep royal purple above, and bright violet underneath. Blooming constantly during warm weather with small clusters of bright pink, 3-petalled, pale orchid-pink flowers. 1 in. (2.5 cm), emerge at the stem tips. Tradescantia pallida is a tender perennial which makes a beautiful groundcover. Its sprawling stems root in the moist soil, to create a carpet of ground-hugging foliage. Evergreen in frost-free areas, it dies back with mild freezes, but sprouts back in spring. In colder areas, it may be grown as a bedding annual, in a container or hanging basket, or as a houseplant.
THE MAN WITH TWO HATS
The National Canadian War Memorial in Apeldoorn is called 'The Man with Two Hats'. Ottawa, Canada, has an identical statue symbolising the solidarity between the two countries. The two hats represent war and peace, repression and freedom, life and death, sadness and joy. In fact, many Dutch people regard the Canadians as the true liberators of the Netherlands.

The statue Man with Two Hats stands in Commissioners Park. An explanatory plaque contains the following text:
During the Second World War, Canadian soldiers played a crucial role in the liberation of the Netherlands. With the donation of this monument - an expression of joy and a celebration of freedom - the Netherlands pays lasting tribute to Canada.
A statue identical to this one stands in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. The twin monuments symbolically link Canada and the Netherlands; though separated by an ocean, the two countries will forever be close friends.
Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands unveiled the monument in Ottawa on May 11, 2002, and the other in Apeldoorn on May 2, 2000.

L'homme aux deux chapeaux - Man with two hats
The Man with Two Hats || L'homme aux deux chapeaux
In the City of Apeldoorn, The Man With Two Hats monument symbolizes many dualities. The two hats in and of themselves represent a time when to come through the war with one hat was something of a feat. It represents the end of the horrors of war but in the same vein the peace and freedom that continue to elude many countries today. It symbolizes the two countries of Canada and the Netherlands. The outstretched arms symbolize the liberation of the Netherlands and also the reaching out of country to country, people to people. The visage, one of sadness and deep meditation and also one of serenity and peace. With the donation of this monument, the Netherlands pays a lasting tribute to Canada. A statue identical to this one stands in Ottawa, Ontario. The twin monuments symbolically link Canada and the Netherlands, forever close friends.
The monument, which was sculpted by Dutch artist Henk Visch, is made of bronze and measures 4.6 metres. Entitled "The Man with Two Hats" (De man met de twee hoeden), it symbolizes the historic bonds between Canada and the Netherlands.

Known and recognized for its remarkable industrial heritage, the Tour & Taxis site is undergoing full conversion. The main objective is to make it an exemplary sustainable district, for the benefit of all, favoring urban development that reclaims the banks of the canal.
Due to its strategic location, along the canal and in the immediate vicinity of the historic center of Brussels, the former Tour & Taxis railway site has enormous potential and is undergoing a real revival. The Royal Warehouse, the Stores and the Gare Maritime, three buildings of inestimable heritage value, are a key focus of this renewal.
The development of this 45 ha site, surrounded by dense and lively districts (the Maritime and Marie-Christine districts) was planned by a master plan, fed by participatory reflections. This was adopted by the Brussels-Capital Region in December 2008. It pays particular attention to green spaces, active mobility, diversity, enhancement of heritage and sustainable development.
The bridge, planned by the French colonial power in 1899-1902 and built mainly by the Vietnamese among numerous victims, is almost 1.7 km long and has only been allowed for mopeds and pedestrians for many years. It was the quality of product... :) Steel, strength, durability... Probably a tank should fight for long with them to get a winner :)

HARDWARE
Well the chain link fence is durable and the helicopter is made from a lot of hardware and a lot of hardware went into the construction of downtown San Diego, California.
*Note
Our skyline is not real high as compared to some other major cities because of the Lindbergh Field Airport. The approach for landing and takeoff for the airlines is pretty tight to the buildings of the metropolitan area. Anyone who has every flown in or out of San Diego knows what I am talking about. Oh... then there is the Rose Canyon Fault Line which runs right under the bay... tall buildings should not live right next to fault lines... well nothing's perfect and I sure do love my city!

Image for the Week 29 - Metal
theme calender: Let's Get Creative 2014!
I tried to see Metal as emotion. The first thing I thought of was strength. It is durable and is used for many things that have to do with power or other things where it has to prove itself.
On the other Hand I felt a Cold. It is not the temperature rather a silent cold.
An embracing Cold that holds you when you come in contact with it. A silent moment of coldness and strength.

The B17 Flying Fortress was a heavy bomber aircraft used by the United States during World War II. It was known for its durability and ability to withstand heavy enemy fire. The B17 played a crucial role in Allied bombing campaigns and is now considered an iconic symbol of American air power during the war.

A832 On the North Coast 500 Route
The dark strip of land left is Gruinard Island where during the second World War they spread Anthrax as an experiment. Though I believe it is reported to be cleaned up now! Not a place I'd be visiting.
This from Wikapedia.
In 1942, during the Second World War, a biological warfare test was carried out on Gruinard by British military scientists from the Biology Department of Porton Down. The British government was investigating the feasibility of a bioweapons attack using anthrax. It was recognised that tests would cause long-lasting contamination of the immediate area by anthrax spores, so a remote and uninhabited island was required. Gruinard was surveyed, deemed suitable, and requisitioned from its owners by the British Government.Porton Down meteorologist Sir Oliver Graham Sutton was put in charge of a fifty-man team to conduct the trial, with David Henderson in charge of the germ bomb. Biology Department head Paul Fildes made frequent visits.
The anthrax strain chosen was a highly virulent type called "Vollum 14578", named after R. L. Vollum, Professor of Bacteriology at the University of Oxford, who supplied it. Eighty sheep were taken to the island and bombs filled with anthrax spores were exploded close to where selected groups were tethered. The sheep became infected with anthrax and began to die within days of exposure.
Some of the experiments were recorded on 16 mm colour movie film, which was declassified in 1997. One sequence shows the detonation of an anthrax bomb fixed at the end of a tall pole supported with guy ropes. After the bomb explodes, a brownish aerosol cloud drifts away towards the target animals. A later sequence shows anthrax-infected sheep carcasses being burned in incinerators at the end of the experiment.
After the tests were completed, scientists concluded that a large release of anthrax spores would thoroughly pollute German cities, rendering them uninhabitable for decades afterwards. Those conclusions were supported by the inability to decontaminate the island after the experiment—the spores were sufficiently durable to resist any efforts at decontamination.
In 1945, when the island's owner sought its return, the Ministry of Supply recognised that the island was contaminated, and so could not be de-requisitioned until it was deemed safe. In 1946, the government agreed to acquire the island and to take responsibility for it. The owner or her heirs would be able to repurchase the island for £500 when it was declared "fit for habitation by man and beast".
For many years, it was judged too hazardous and expensive to decontaminate the island sufficiently to allow public access, and Gruinard Island was quarantined indefinitely. Visits to the island were prohibited, except for periodic checks by Porton Down personnel to determine the level of contamination.
Operation Dark Harvest
In 1981 newspapers began receiving messages with the heading "Operation Dark Harvest" which demanded that the government decontaminate the island, and reported that a "team of microbiologists from two universities" had landed on the island with the aid of local people and collected 300 lb (140 kg) of soil.
The group threatened to leave samples of the soil "at appropriate points that will ensure the rapid loss of indifference of the government and the equally rapid education of the general public". The same day a sealed package of soil was left outside the military research facility at Porton Down; tests revealed that it contained anthrax bacilli. A few days later another sealed package of soil was left in Blackpool, where the ruling Conservative Party was holding its annual conference. The soil did not contain anthrax, but officials said that the soil was similar to that found on the island.
Decontamination
Starting in 1986 a determined effort was made to decontaminate the island: 280 tonnes of formaldehyde solution diluted in sea water was sprayed over all 196 hectares of the island and the worst-contaminated topsoil around the dispersal site was removed. A flock of sheep was then placed on the island and remained healthy.
On 24 April 1990, after 48 years of quarantine and four years after the solution was applied, junior defence minister Michael Neubert visited the island and announced its safety by removing the warning signs. On 1 May 1990, the island was repurchased by the heirs of the original owner for the original sale price of £500.
I like how this light yellow Mercedes-Benz (W123) from decades ago distinguishes itself from the colorless group of modern cars in the background.
To me it seems a bit odd to consider this as an old car even though it is. It might be because these were so commonly recognizable from the time I was a young adult. Its production lasted 11 model years which seems almost like forever, and their durability assured their presence on the roads for many years thereafter.
Notice that there are two Mercedes Benz autos in this photo. In addition to the subject yellow one there’s a white one sitting in traffic, visible between the old Benz and the traffic light pylon. Covering up the front end of the old one, it still looks very much like a Mercedes Benz. Do the same to the white one and suddenly that car becomes a bit more generic and anonymous, not as immediately recognizable as a Mercedes Benz. That’s a priceless quality possessed by the older model and not so much by the newer one.

This is an OC, originally known as Blackhawk.
Name: Frank Willis
Alias: Nightshift
Equipment/Weapons: Nightshift armor (bullet-resistant, can deflect knives, and has holsters containing throwing weapons), throwing weapons (knives and shurikens), smoke grenades, grapple hook, and spiked gauntlets.
Powers/Abilities: Skilled actor and pilot, extremely acrobatic, armor grants durability, but slows agility. He also designs his own weapons.
Weaknesses: Frank doesn’t have super powers, he is also an alcoholic.
History/Backstory:
Frank Willis was a professional pilot and actor. After graduating school, he joined the Air Force and became a professional pilot. He soon left due to the begging of his parents. After leaving the Air Force, he grew a fond of acting. During his acting career, he starred in many action movies and even performed his own stunts (might be Tom Cruise). After leaving acting and realizing the crime rate in his hometown went up, he became a vigilante. He graduated training while at JAVELIN and became Blackhawk. As Blackhawk, he started a superhero team known as the Saviors. The Saviors’ headquarters was a rented out space of an office building, it eventually became the official headquarters after Willis’s first appearance on the news. The first iteration of the Saviors group was: Matchstick, Blackhawk, Mister Magnet, and Flagstaff. They gained tons of attention and popularity after battling some thieves robbing a bank. Sadly, during they’re 2nd mission, Mister Magnet was shot to death (kinda ironic) and Matchstick was kicked off a building after being blinded, and Flagstaff was stabbed by his own staff. Blackhawk was the only survivor and he escaped. People still rooted for him, but Blackhawk publicly quit. That was also the reason why he became an alcoholic. A few years later, Blackhawk came back as Nightshift and formed the 2nd Saviors group. Currently, he is trying to recruit the Liberator.
I will make Matchstick, Mister Magnet, and Flagstaff in LEGO form soon. JAVELIN is based off of andhe’s idea.

Yurts and cabins
Renting a yurt or cabin is an affordable and convenient way to vacation at a Washington state park. Yurts and cabins provide the basic comforts of heating, electricity and furnishings that allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature year round without "roughing it." And the price per night for up to six people is as low as $23.
Yurts
These circular, domed tents are made of extra-heavy, durable canvas and have spacious interiors with skylights, screened windows, hardwood floors and locking doors. Traditionally, yurts served as strong shelters for nomadics in Asia. Yurts sleep up to six people.

The “Slaughters” of Cotswold Gloucestershire.
What is it about Cotswold Limestone
that makes it so appealing?
Its warmth, durability, permanence,
history, ambience......?
Hard to explain.
Impossible to ignore.
The beautiful River Eye flows through Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter, in a tree-laden valley, contrasting splendidly
with that irresistible Limestone.
Upper Slaughter is little more than ten metres
higher up the valley, and only half a mile away.
Both villages seem to grow out of the landscape,
rather than be a scar upon it.
Cosy, unpretentious, dignified, on a human scale, uniquely, they seem to enhance their landscape, as opposed to dominating it.
Whatever, “beautiful” means, they tick that box for me.
Bugs and plants have lived in symbiosis for hundreds of millions of years. Many bugs get their food from plants, and in return help them with reproduction. Bugs breathe oxygen and produce CO2. Plants, on the other hand, breathe CO2 and produce oxygen. Flowers generate colors and messages for bugs, that humans can't even perceive. What would happen if we started experimenting with enhancements of intelligence, size and durability of those two? And what would happen if the result turned their newly won abilities against us?

The Western Dragon, also known as the "Red Dragon," was the most civilian oriented of the Dragon Revolvers produced by DRG gunsmiths. It was notable for its improvement upon the family secret alloys in a way that gave the Western Dragon far better thermal traits at the expense of some of the original formula's legendary durability. The resulting design has only slightly above average endurance, but incredible heat resistance. This not allows the "Red Dragon" to operate without issue in extremely hot, arid climates, but also helps it maintain accuracy even after high volumes of fire. This, combined with the rest of the design, was aimed to make the Western Dragon an ideal target revolver. Reputedly, though not advertised with the revolver, this thermal performance also improved the Western Dragon's handling of hot hand-loaded munitions.
Spirula spirula is a species of deep-water squid-like cephalopod mollusk. It is the only extant member of the genus Spirula, the family Spirulidae, and the order Spirulida. Because of the shape of its internal shell, it is commonly known as the ram's horn squid or the little post horn squid. Because the live animal has a light-emitting organ, it is also sometimes known as the tail-light squid.
Live specimens of this cephalopod are very rarely seen because it is a deep-ocean dweller. The small internal shell of the species is, however, quite a familiar object to many beachcombers. The shell of Spirula is extremely light in weight, very buoyant, and surprisingly durable; it very commonly floats ashore onto tropical beaches (and sometimes even temperate beaches) all over the world. This seashell is known to shell collectors as the ram's horn shell or simply as Spirula.
The most distinctive feature of this species is its buoyancy organ, an internal, chambered, endogastrically coiled shell in the shape of an open planispiral (a flat spiral wherein the coils do not touch each other), and consisting of two prismatic layers. The shell functions to osmotically control buoyancy; the gas-filled chambers keep the spirula in a vertical, head-down attitude.Another trait is that it is mineralized, a feature only seen in cuttlefish and the nautilus amongst extant species

The concrete, while durable, will erode away long before the rock seawall. Happy Saturday for Stairs!
If you get the chance, South America is well worth the investment.
I just wish I had a better camera back then (2009). The little Nikon P50 was light and durable, but a DSLR would have done better justice to this view.
