View from our dune bashing caravan outside of Abu Dhabi, UAE. Went here on tour with my theatre company in September 2018. We slept out on the dunes that night. Dates, tea, lamb, and hookah.

A dangerously arid climate, no reliable water sources and an ever-shifting terrain: the Empty Quarter in the Arab peninsula is 650,000 km² of hostile, unforgiving desert. Witness the All-New Range Rover Sport set the fastest recorded time for a standard production SUV in one of the most treacherous terrains man and machine could face.

Although I’ve been really busy last week shooting every day for a couple of clients, this Friday I got up very early (5am early!) and headed towards the Empty Quarter at the border between UAE and Saudi Arabia. The Empty Quarter (Rub’ Al Khali in Arabic) is the largest desert in the world and spreads between the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Yemen. It’s a beautiful place, but can be very tough to conquer.

We were in four cars, camping over night and doing a 20km desert route on Friday. It was tough going in a few spots, but with the help of an experienced friend, his awesome raised Jeep Wrangler and a few other useful desert toys, we managed to climb to the top of the dunes to enjoy the beautiful views below us.

As I’ve mentioned in a couple of previous posts, I’m still playing with my tilt-shift lens, experimenting with tilting the focus point. I quite like the result in this one, but I would be interested to hear your opinion.

Dubai Desert Safari Dune Bashing

This was actually taken through the windscreen of the Landcruiser, just before we descended the dune at some speed. It gives some indication of just how big these dunes are. I am not sure of the exact location - being in a desert with no fixed landmarks is a little disorientating

trying to get shots of this was like trying to photograph the inside of a washing machine while it was still going round...

The dunes are a playground for young men with cars. There is a fairly obvious route across the desert, but a 4WD vehicle is essential. We had to reduce our tyre pressure from 35 psi to 17 psi to make the journey.

Landcruisers rock the dunes.

Have a great day out there folks

Great way to have fun in the desert in comfortable 4 wheel drive Toyota Landcruisers. Just make sure you have an air-line to reinflate your tyres!!
