Update: This photo made on flick Explore to #103 for 7/24/2009. Thanks everyone!
In May, 2009 I went on a business trip to Abu Dhabi and one evening we had the opportunity to go "Dune Bashing". Basically some local Emeratis took us out to the Al Khatem desert in Land Cruisers, deflated the tires most of the way, and drove up and down the sand dunes like a giant roller coaster. Needless to say, it was a great time.
Dune bashing, also known as desert safari, is a form of off-roading, using an off-road vehicle to explore sand dunes. Whilst in some parts of the world, such as the fragile coastal dunes of Australia, it is illegal, in others such as the Middle East, it is a booming attraction for tourists.
Prices for such an activity vary according to geographic location. In Dubai, UAE, half a day of dune bashing with a tour company costs between US$ 40 and US$ 60 per person or US$ 300 to rent a six-seat vehicle, with a driver included.
A great day out! Plenty of whooping on board as we thrashed around the dunes, before stopping for a make shift lunch in the middle of nowhere.
Have a lovely weekend, as usual I won't be about too much, maybe in and out of flickland and I will catch you on the other side.

Dune bashing, somewhere near Dubai.
Or, desert landscape with Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
Apparently, I still love cinematic 2.39:1 crop. :)

A dangerously arid climate, no reliable water sources and an ever-shifting terrain: the Empty Quarter in the Arab peninsula is 650,000 km² of hostile, unforgiving desert. Witness the All-New Range Rover Sport set the fastest recorded time for a standard production SUV in one of the most treacherous terrains man and machine could face.
Good news folks, we are into the last few days of my UAE trip, I have saved a few of my favourites for last, kicking off today with the last shot from my Dune Bashing adventure
Fujairah is the only Emirate of the UAE that is almost totally mountainous. All the other Emirates, like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are located on the west coast, and are largely covered by desert. Therefore, Fujairah boasts a higher than average yearly rainfall of the UAE, allowing farmers in the region to produce one crop every year.
The weather is seasonal, although it is warm for most of the year. The months of October to March are generally regarded as the coolest, with daytime temperatures averaging around 25 °C (77 °F) and rarely venturing above 30 °C (86 °F) with temperatures climbing to over 40 °C (104 °F) degrees in the summer. The winter period also coincides with the rainy season and although by no means guaranteed, this is when Fujairah experiences the bulk of its precipitation. Rainfall is higher than the rest of the UAE. partly because of the effect of the mountains that encircle the Emirate, and partly because the prevailing winds are westerly bringing with them water-laden clouds off the warm Indian Ocean.
The variability of the east coast climate is partly due to the presence of the Hajjar mountain range. As with other mountainous areas, precipitation is higher, and this allows for a more varied micro-environment in the area. Tourist visitor numbers peak just before the school summer months.
View from our dune bashing caravan outside of Abu Dhabi, UAE. Went here on tour with my theatre company in September 2018. We slept out on the dunes that night. Dates, tea, lamb, and hookah.
