Thank you very much for the visit, faves and comments. Cheers....from a short holiday at Peregian. Peregian Beach is a small seaside town on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, at the southernmost point of the Noosa region. It is one of the few beach places close to Brisbane that has not been consumed by ugly high rise, high density living.

This photo of the Dunes shows a group of Springboks directly in front of the Dune. I think it really gives some perspective on how immense the Dunes are.

Evening light and tones on the sand dunes in Colorado. If you look closely there are small tracks that lead off into the dunes. Something small made them.

Soft dusk light on low sand dunes, Death Valley National Park.

This subject is going to appear in several photographs from our late-March visit to Death Valley National Park. Some of them will focus on the astonishing power of a dust storm that swept through near the end of the trip. However, this one comes from a different evening, one with gentle winds and soft light.

The conditions make all the difference when photographing dunes, More than almost any other sort of landscape, the appearance of sand dunes is greatly depending upon intensity, quality, and color of light. Here I photographed in the early twilight just after the sun had dropped behind distant mountains in the west. The dunes picked up the pink of sunset light, the blue of the sky, and the softness of indirect light.

This is a 5 stitch image captured by zooming in and panning to get a closer view from afar, but to get a nice high resolution capture of the dunes, mountains, and desert brush. The dunes are 800 feet tall and about 6 miles across in this view, to help give it scale.

Two Emirati men trek up a large dune; the white of their dishdash and ghutra contrasting against the sand; the sand against the perfectly blue sky. I could hear their conversation and laughter carrying in the wind over the dunes despite my distance.

Whether I had been lucky enough to have my camera or not... I would never have forgotten this scene.

A dune gains altitude not just because of wind patterns but also because there is underground water that is it's anchor.

I've had too many projects going and not enough time for photography especially when life keeps getting in the way of all the things I'd like to be doing. For 2016 I'm really going to try concentrating on the art of photography culling through my images and processing all the intimate natural abstracts I've neglected as well as all the images I'd love to do in black and white. Of course, I'll keep getting out there trying to get those epic wowzer eye-candy images, but I really feel it's time to get my art on. Stay creative people, look outside of the box, get out of your comfort zone and feed your soul!

Thanks as always for taking the time for a look!

Dunes in Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

The Henty Dunes are a very large dune field on the northern end of Ocean Beach on Tasmania's west coast. The dunes are fed with sand mainly from Macquarie Harbour to the south and the Henty Rivers that flow in from the north. The constant west sou-west of the Roaring Forties off the Southern Ocean (in the distance) have generated a significant dune-scape here since the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age.

The wet, temperate-marine climate ensures that where vegetation gets established, it hangs on unless disturbed. Recreational vehicles are permitted on some parts of the dunes but occasionally signs indicating the boundaries just fall over...

These dunes are ancient and some are so well established that small rainforest habitats have appeared on them. To the north, the preserved footprints or ichnofossils of Australian mega-fauna can be found in some secret between-dune depressions while the footprints of contemporary birds and wildlife surround active soaks.

Story:

Captured in the heart of the Jalapão region, this panoramic nightscape reveals the raw beauty of Brazil’s Cerrado under a pristine Bortle 1 sky. Dominating the scene is the luminous arch of the Milky Way, stretching from one horizon to the other, its core glowing with interstellar dust, emission nebulae, and countless stars. The reddish tones near the galactic center are enhanced by the use of a modified sensor, revealing prominent H-alpha regions like the Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae.

To the right, a striking column of Zodiacal Light rises—sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust—perfectly aligned with the ecliptic. Subtle green and red hues of airglow add a surreal touch to the lower sky, interacting with the warm tones of the dunes and the reflecting waters of the meandering stream. Buriti palms and native vegetation complete the composition, grounding this celestial spectacle in the unique landscape of the Brazilian savanna.

This image is not a blend but a multi-frame panorama, precisely captured to preserve the spatial relationships of both the terrestrial and astronomical elements. A technical and artistic tribute to one of the darkest skies in South America.
