This is a short distance from Leech Lake. The PCT generally heads north from here along the crest of the Cascade Mountains near the Yakima/Lewis County line. This photo is on the Yakima County side of the crest.
Thursday and Friday (July 27-28) hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from Leech Lake located at White Pass, Washington first to Deer Lake, then Sand and Pipe Lakes, and finally to Dumbell Lake where I spent the night. Total miles hiked was about 16 (25.7K) including walks around Deer and Dumbell Lakes. Round trip elevation gain and loss is about 2200 feet (3540 K) but the trail is mostly gentle with only a few switchbacks and lots of flat or gentle grade areas. Mosquitoes were tolerable most of the time, but plentiful. Weather was great but slightly warm for hiking. Thankfully at times there was a pleasant breeze that helped keep the mosquitoes at bay. There were very few people on the trail until Friday afternoon when I was hiking back to Leech Lake where I started this trip. Ran into a nice back country ranger who was doing high lake aquatic surveys with emphasis on salamander presence/absence. In addition to the names lakes that I mentioned there are many small ponds. That is why there are so many mosquitoes in that area. I believe that I have hiked all of the PCT in Yakima County. Although I have been to all of the lakes mentioned above I took different routes. There is a much shorter easier route to Dumbell Lake from Dog Lake but why do it the easy way when you can see new landscape? IMG_1876
Beautiful Planetary Nebula. The name "Dumbbell" comes from its appearance to the eye at the telescope. The red regions (hydrogen) are the easiest to see which give the dumbbell shape. The greenish blue regions are caused by forbidden transition lines from oxygen gas. The gas itself has been expelled by the "blue" star in the centre that is transforming into a white dwarf, just as our own Sun will one day. This image is a composite of B,V, R Johnson-cousins filters. Data gathered from the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO) in Victoria, British Columbia with 60 second exposure times.

The lizard Anolis longitibialis is a species of anole found on Hispaniola, a Caribbean island comprised of the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Anoles are a diverse group of small, primarily arboreal, insectivorous lizard species found in the New World from North Carolina all the way to central South America and on the Caribbean islands. This species is a member of a Hispaniolan clade of anoles that are all considered members of the “trunk-ground” ecomorph class. Trunk-ground anoles are so named because they use low perches, such as tree trunks and large rocks, and will actively forage on the ground. Members of this ecomorph, which are similar in ecology and morphology, have evolved independently on several Caribbean islands, including Hispaniola. Anolis longtibialis belongs to the cybotoid radiation of anoles, which is a monophyletic group containing A. cybotes and roughly half a dozen other trunk-ground species. This species is primarily a rock dweller; it is at home on large boulders or perched along limestone cliff walls. Its distribution is relatively restricted in comparison with the other species in this clade. Anolis longitibialis was first identified on Isla Beata, a small satellite island off the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, where it is quite abundant. On Isla Beata it perches on broad cliff walls, and will use the crevices to hide. Schwartz (1979) reported a distinct subspecies discovered in the Jaragua National Park, in the southwestern Dominican Republic. Jaragua is composed mainly of dry forest, and there are patches of limestone rocks scattered throughout. This species perches on those rocks, as well as the surrounding vegetation.
Compared to other species in the cybotoid radiation, the rock and cliff-dwelling A. longitibialis is relatively restricted in its distribution. It can only be found in the southwestern Dominican Republic, in the southern lowland areas of Barahona and Pedernales provinces, and on the satellite island of Isla Beata.
Anolis longitibialis is a medium-sized anole, as males can reach 72 mm snout-vent length (SVL) and females 59 mm. This species is larger than most other cybotoids, although A. strahmi, from the Sierra de Baoruco, and A. haetianus, from the western Tiburon Peninsula in Haiti, can achieve larger body sizes. This species has a distinctive dirty yellow or mustard colored dewlap, which gets lighter, reaching a light orange or pale yellow, heading from the edge to the base. Typical patterning includes a brown dorsum with 4 transverse dumbbell-shaped blotches along the body, and usually a pair of sacral blotches. The throat is usually striped in females, but is not commonly streaked in males. Its large head has a sharp canthus and a low nuchal crest. For a more detailed description, see Schwartz (1979) or Schwartz and Henderson (1991).
Anolis longitibialis specuum Schwartz, 1979
Holotype: MCZ 132370 (Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University)
Type Locality: 17km NW of Oviedo Nuevo, Pedernales Province, Dominican Republic
As in A. l. longitibialis, males of this subspecies reach 72 mm in snout-vent length, while females reach 59 mm. This subspecies also has 4-5 postrostral scales. In contrast, however, A. l. specuum has larger dorsal and ventral scales. Its back is brown with 4 transverse dumbells, with sacral blotches not uncommon. While males don’t usually have streaked throats, females typically do. The dewlap ranges from a light orange to a dusky or mustard yellow.

Chelsea is a sweetie. And, she is becoming such a fun obedience dog! I plan on entering her in Novice at the Atlanta shows in Aug. Chelsea got measured for her dumbells at class this week, too. I haven't done obedience since the '80's with my Basset girl. I'm getting very excited!
BOX DATE: 1990
MANUFACTURER: Mattel
MISSING ITEMS: Counter, dumbell, 2 weights, 2 plates, 2 cups, soda bottle, bananas, orange, pear, apple, pineapple
IMPORTANT NOTES: There was a similar gym released with just the bike and the treadmill, also dated 1990, but was called the All Stars Home Gym.
PERSONAL FUN FACT: This was my very first authentic Barbie gym. Prior to getting this at the flea market in 2003, I imagined a gym for my dollies. I recall that I set one up on top of an old living room end table in the basement. I pooled all my various sporting/gym related doll accessories and laid them out, to create the illusion of a gym. That was back when I played with my Workin' Out and Flip 'N Dive Barbies obsessively. Anyways, this gym was part of a large flea market lot. Dad bought my sister and me the 1978 Barbie Dream House and a few overflowing boxes of doll furniture in 2003. I didn't know it at the time, but the trampoline we were so obsessed with was sold with the gym equipment. As kids, Colleen and I both knew the trampoline was authentic Barbie (due to the Mattel logo). We always had this out in our makeshift Barbie "yard" for the kids to use. The treadmill and elliptical weren't utilized nearly as much, although I do believe we may have set up a home gym for the man dolls at one point. I suppose making our dolls work out wasn't nearly as exciting as having them go out to eat or shop.

White Gate 1873
240 Minnesota Street
George Buck, a cooper, shingle manufacturer and lumber merchant, built this Classical Vernacular, two-storey clapboard home in 1873. He was principal owner of George Buck and Company, later known as Melville, Fair and Company, with a factory located at the north end of Minnesota Street. It is likely that the Buck Company produced much of the building material used in construction of the dwelling. The house became known as “White Gate” when owner Mary Bellerby opened a small tea room in the home during her occupancy from 1923-1951. A charming white fence and gate bounded the property at this time. Other notable owners (1951-1969) were Captain Merton Plunkett, founder of the First World War-era vaudeville troupe, the Dumbells, and his wife, Lila.

I rarely post pictures of official sets, but I've really gotta make a plug for the new toy story garbage truck. It's quite a brilliant design in both looks and functionality. It is admittedly a little overpriced, probably due to the minifigs, but in this case, worth the money. Look at that dark green!
I was extremely leery of the pizza planet truck because of the price (and because I don't have much need for yellow parts), but if it's as much fun to build as this was, I may have to bite the bullet and pick one up.
The little dumbell or butterfly nebula. My real first light with my ASI183MC camera. Total exposure 120 minutes (60 subs) with Takahashi TOA130 at f/5.5 using the Takahashi FS/TOA reducer.
Reworking old data now I'm better at post processing. The Sagitta constellation, with M27 Dumbell Nebula visible on the top of the frame, and globular cluster M71 in the constellation itself.
10x 60sec subs taken on the 3rd September 2019, taken with an unmodded d810 with 70-200 f2.8 @ 105mm, f4, iso 400, tracked with astrotrac. Stacked and processed with Nebulosity and Photoshop.
