Messier 76 (M76), also known as the Little Dumbbell Nebula, NGC 650/651, Barbell Nebula, or Cork Nebula, is a planetary nebula located in the northern constellation Perseus. It lies approximately 2,500 to 3,400 light-years from Earth and is one of the faintest objects in the Messier catalog, with an apparent magnitude of around 10.1.

Structure and Physical Characteristics

M76 is a classic example of a bipolar planetary nebula, meaning it consists of a thick ring structure (seen edge-on as the central bar) and two opposing lobes formed from the outer layers of a dying star ejected into space. The main body appears as an elliptical ring, while gas expands rapidly away from the central disc to form the nebula’s characteristic wings or lobes.

At the heart of M76 lies a white dwarf, the remnant of a star similar to our Sun, which now excites the surrounding gases causing them to glow. The central white dwarf has a temperature above 60,000 K and a magnitude of about 16.6, making it very faint. The nebula itself is a shell of gas ejected as the star transitioned from a red giant to its final white dwarf state.

This cloud of gas nebula is the result of a star that died by exploding 3000 years ago. Its located 1360 lightyears away in the constellation 'Vulpecula the fox'.

This is a narrowband SHO image of Messier 27 - better known as the Dumbell Nebula.

This was the result of 10.25 hours of exposure taken wiht my Astro-Physics 130mm EDT APO scope, with a ZWO AI2600MM-Pro Camera, and an IOptron CEM60 mount.

This is a reprocess of data that was collected 1.5 years ago. I was happy with this image and pleased that it had been published in Astronomy Magazine and in Amateur Astrophotography magazine - but I always felt that I could improve on it.

Now that time has gone by, I have new advanced tools that I did not have the first time around a new techniques that I had learned along the way.

I think I have gotten the stars under better control, and I have been able to bring out a lot more detail in the gas shroud around the core.

Day 2 of hike to Dumbell Lake

I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Leech Lake located at White Pass, Washington first to Deer Lake, then Sand and Pipe Lakes, and finally to Dumbell Lake where I spent the night. Total miles hiked was about 16 (25.7K) including walks around Deer and Dumbell Lakes. Round trip elevation gain and loss is about 2200 feet (3540 K) but the trail is mostly gentle with only a few switchbacks and lots of flat or gentle grade areas. Mosquitoes were tolerable most of the time, but plentiful. Weather was great but slightly warm for hiking. Thankfully at times there was a pleasant breeze that helped keep the mosquitoes at bay. There were very few people on the trail until Friday afternoon when I was hiking back to Leech Lake where I started this trip. Ran into a nice back country ranger who was doing high lake aquatic surveys with emphasis on salamander presence/absence. In addition to the names lakes that I mentioned there are many small ponds. That is why there are so many mosquitoes in that area. I believe that I have hiked all of the PCT in Yakima County. Although I have been to all of the lakes mentioned above I took different routes. I Earn My Chocolate [113/365] - I'm sorry guys, I was far too tired 365 this evening, once again. After 2 hours at the gym, my friend Kimmy and I headed to the grocery store on a mission to stock up on healthy food. We foolishly found ourselves in the candy aisle, where we proceeded to buy family size chocolate bars. I figure I earn them, one sit up at a time!
