This past Saturday was another Galveston Seawall Full Moon Drumcircle & Dance Jam that the circle I starterd drumming with likes to do from time to time. I think the official count of all the drummers and dancers was between 107 and 123 people. With spectators at one point it reached 200 people or so.
I'm glad I decided to go this time. I was sick the last two times they decided to do this and I promised myself I wasn't going to miss the next one. I almost turned around drove back to Houston. Let's just say I was having a really rough time. Between driving around for almost two hours trying to find parking and my cooler turning over spilling water all over the insides of my vehicle I was frustrated as hell. I lucked up and found a spot not too far away and I'm glad I stayed.
We had people playing djembes, doumbeks, congas, ashikos, shekere, zills, claves; as well as someone playing saxaphone, flute, and zither. The bellydancers were amazing. We learned some new rhythms and I was able to keep up with the "seasoned" pros I think. Still not a fan of 6/8 rhythm though. I look so angry when I'm trying to concentrate.
We played the hell out of Kuku, Fanga, Macuta and the Samba. And I this one rhythm called Soot Al Shami. We esaily played from 25 to 40 minutes each. I think we actually played Kuku a couple of times before I left at 12:30 AM. I payed for it the next day at work but it was totally worth it. I can't wait til the next one!

Artist Aurelio Martinez, leading voice of the Garifuna Community, was Honduras' first Senator of African descent. Aurelio was selected by the Rolex Mentor Protege Initiative as a protege of Youssou N'Dour. He served as co-host of this MusicWorks NYC Studio Reception.
The Garifuna community in the U.S dates back to the 1800's and number an estimated 40,000 strong in New York alone.
