What’s around that bend? Life is full of twists and turns. It’s seldom turns out the way we plan. But one of the secrets is to find joy in the adventure even when the unexpected strikes.

I’m no geologist, but I have learned some serious respect and love for sandstone.

Mornings in the desert are beautiful enough to turn almost anyone into a morning person.

Where will your road take you today?

SUNSET OVER SOUTH BAY

Sunset over South Bay

Today was overcast, pretty much all day, but the sky was finally breaking near the beach (at least seen from where I was), and I thought it may turn out to be a fantastic sunset. But I didn’t feel like driving out to the beach.

Instead, I pulled out my old DJI Mavic Pro and let it take off from a little park nearby. While the massive blanket of clouds was still hovering overhead, it was very clear out in the ocean, and the sun was clearly visible. No marine layer.

It had been a while, so I totally forgot how sensitive the gimbal wheels and the sticks were. I flew it away from the park so that I could position it near I-405 and high enough to catch the sun dropping behind the ocean horizon.

The sense of stillness across South Bay created by the soft light was very palpable while the blanket of clouds soaked in red was hovering overhead as if the entire sky was blotted out by the alien spaceship. And there was a small but bright dot barely floating above the horizon.

I am planning to fly the drone more often. Stay tuned.

Naukuchiatal is a serene, lakeside village in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India, named for its unique nine-cornered lake. Known for its natural beauty, it's a popular destination for nature lovers and offers activities such as boating, fishing, birdwatching, trekking, and hiking amidst the Himalayan foothills.

Sometimes it’s hard to see the forest for the trees. Stepping back lets me see the forrest, the mountain and even the sky.

Aerial photograph of Britannia Pier, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

Britannia Pier has been a centrepiece of Great Yarmouth’s seafront entertainment since it first opened in 1858. The original wooden structure stretched some 700 feet (213 m) out into the North Sea, built by A.E. Carey and designed by the engineer Marriott Ogle Tarbotton, who later became the Borough Engineer of Nottingham.

Over the years, the pier has suffered and survived numerous fires and storm damage. It was rebuilt in 1902, then again after being severely damaged by fire in 1909 and partially destroyed during the Second World War when part of it was removed as a defensive measure against invasion. The current version dates largely from 1958, making it one of only two surviving piers in Great Yarmouth (alongside Wellington Pier).

Today, Britannia Pier remains in private ownership and is operated by Family Amusements Ltd, featuring the Britannia Theatre, bars, restaurants, amusements, and seasonal fairground rides. The theatre continues the pier’s long entertainment tradition, hosting well-known British comedians, singers, and summer variety shows.

From the air, the pier’s timber deck and distinctive red-roofed pavilion form a striking focal point on the Golden Mile, extending over the sea opposite the town’s Marine Parade.

The third and final shot in my series of Soldier Hollow over Christmas break. This one focuses more on that great barn next to the golf course. I’d really like to sneak back to this area now that the snow has finally arrived.

Despite late season snow storms, spring is beginning to bring shades green to the desert valleys of northern Utah. It’s a very welcome sight!

The breeze stole the reflection here but I still really love the view of beautiful Deer Creek and Timpanogos towering behind.

Sometimes, when the storms rage, flickers of beauty can still be found if you look in the right places.

I’ve been reading about rising water levels on the south side of the Great Salt Lake. Birds are returning to nesting grounds. Still a long way to go, but it’s good to get some positive news about such a fragile, beautiful place.

Last summer, my son and I took a road trip to the east side of the Uinta Mountains. We were there to photograph another subject, but as we finished up the shoot, we were treated to such a nice, warm, summer sunset. I’m excited for summer sun to return.

Northern norway, September 2022

I wanted to work with this photo again this morning. This is one of my favorites from last year. It was one of the most peaceful, beautiful places I’ve visited and I love looking back at the scene because it brings back that same serene feeling. The outdoors are truly medicine for the soul.

There’s just something about camping out in a lodgepole pine forest next to a beautiful river and under a sky alight with warmth.
