thin wire spectacles
he stared grimly ahead --
what fate awaits me?
---
My first warning should have been when I peered through the taxi window and saw his slicked back hair, wire frame glasses, gaze straight ahead, and a general refusal to look at us or talk to us. He could have been an SS officer. Then on the ride back to the hotel, exhaust poured into the cab, choking us. We tried to roll down the windows, but the handles had been removed. The driver cracked his window down 1/8 of an inch, I suppose when it got too bad even for him. I noticed then that none of the instruments on the dash were working.
It could have been worse, all we ended up with were headaches.

Probably one of my best shots of people's portraits. Becak drivers are getting rare and rare. I tell you that I had some nice memory of riding on becak when I was kid. At that time, Bandung city was less crowded, less poluted, you could hear insects in the morning and night time, lots of fireflies. And having becak ride is something very special and relaxing. Bandung was like that 20 years ago.
A driver heading westbound on King was past the point at which it is closed for construction and got themselves stuck in fresh asphalt. They were stuck for over an hour until finally being freed by a very amused CAA tow-truck driver.
Location: King near Beaty
