SS Sullivan stands outside Colchester Barracks holding his riding crop. Note the horseshoe on his arm indicating he had been trained as a horse driver for the Royal Field Artillery. Sullivan appears on two other photographs in the collection so we believe he was a friend of Maurice Whelan.

Banks Peninsula Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand ran their annual Balcairn Trial last weekend. While it rained all day in nearby Christchurch, the North Canterbury venue escaped with just a couple of showers. However, it had rained overnight so some areas were slippery, and the grass was water logged in low laying areas. The event began with a drivers briefing before each driver took on the six sections that had been set. The organisers had done an excellent job creating sections that provided a challenge while also taking account of the conditions. The drivers responded with some excellent displays of driving. A really great day out which, despite being competitive, had a relaxed feel to it and was enjoyed by the drivers and spectators alike.
