Pickering, North-Yorkshire...

I ran alongside, as the steam train was leaving the station..., photographing on the run... It made the driver smile and I captured it!

Most of the passengers may not realise how reliant upon volunteers the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is.

With the magnificent steam engines, beautiful rural stations and smartly uniformed staff, a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is like taking a step back in time.

From the smoke and steam pouring from the engines to the cosy wood-panelled carriages and friendly conductor service, the railway is both lovingly preserved and charmingly authentic.

It’s also the perfect starting point for a day out, whether you’re travelling between the rugged Yorkshire villages, hiking on the wind swept moors or spending a day by the seaside in Whitby.

You know by now that I am a 'purist? Prefer proper pure photography with the, nowadays, often forgotten important ingredient: EMOTION!

With love to you and thank you for ALL your faves and comments, M, (* _ *)

About the photograph.

This is the train driver, peeking out of the door, to watch for the platform staff signalling for the train to leave.

The train is the British Rail Class 42 Warship serial number D821 and named Greyhound. The train, built in 1960, was named after a Royal Navy warship called HMS Greyhound, a destroyer that sunk in 1941.

The Class 42 was built between 1958 to 1961, at British Railway’s Swindon Works, and a total of 38 were produced. The Greyhound got two Maybach 1,135 hp engines, even thought it was a German manufacturer, the engines were made by Bristol Siddeley under licence.

The loco could hold about 3,600 litres of diesel fuel, no mention of what the maximum range would be, as they weren’t designed for long-distance non-stop runs, but the engines could give it a maximum speed of up to 90 mph.

They were then withdrawn from services around 1968 to 1972.

A railway preservation organisation called Diesel Traction Group were planning to buy a Class 22 but before they could get it, it was accidently scrapped, so British Railways offered a choice from the three remaining Warship locos, so the Diesel Traction Group bought series number D821 for preservation.

The photo was taken from a footbridge at Highley Station, and looking towards south.

About Severn Valley Railway.

The Severn Valley Railway is a 16 miles single track heritage railway line in Worcestershire and Shropshire, between the towns of Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. The railway line follows the course of the River Severn along the Severn Valley.

The train services are often hauled by a mix of vintage steam locomotives, and classic diesel locomotives, usually pulling resorted heritage carriages.

The Severn Valley Railway often holds special events during some weekends, and the Step Back to the 1940s event is one of the many events.

Here I am, just driving down Madison Street in Rockford, minding my own business. It's bad enough there's a train traveling down the middle of the street, but then it makes a right turn right in front of me without using its turn signal. Drivers these days...

Back in the day I think the job of train driver carried a real fascination for many. Here the driver of 1S05 the 07:00 King's Cross to Edinburgh re-joins 91118 for the journey north from York on the morning of 12.11.2016

The fabulous station at York was designed by the architect Thomas Prosser. At the time of completion in 1877 it was the largest railway station in the world. The station is full of fascinating arches and on the metallic arches there are wonderful spandrel.
