According to wikipedia: "A hand grenade is a strong alcoholic cocktail drink. It was first made at the 1983 Louisiana World's Fair. It is sold at four locations in the French Quarter in New Orleans and through mail order and the Internet. The receipe, trademark, and licenses of the product is owned by 721 Bourborn, Inc. The "hand grenade" consists of 1 1/2 ounces of rum, gin, vodka, grain alcohol, and melon liquor served over crushed ice and garnished with mint."

Mine did not have mint.

These bottles were on the counter of the cafe called "Eat." (that's "Eat" followed by a full stop or period) on London's South Bank at Waterloo. So they don't just do food then...

Paul and I had our last dinner out together at Oyamel, part of the chain of tapas style restaurants of Jose Andres, head chef of Jaleo. (It also includes Zaytinya)

Mexican foods are the way they go here. Paul opted for a Dos Equis Amber and I went for Oyamel ponche, a mix of white wine, Simebrea Azul, Patron Citronge, agave nectar and a blend of tropical fruits. 8.50 for a glass.

It's like a Mexican sangria, if could call it that. It had bits of jicama and mango, which lightly flavored it. It was like a white wine punch, but I think I like my sangria the way it is, full-bodied and fruity. This ponche is refreshing, but if you're looking for something to leave an impression on your taste buds, go elsewhere.

Popular drink from my primary school days. Probably the only drink, there in the canteen of Mattar Pri. The stallholder also provided plastic forks to fish out and eat the pineapple slices with. Drink was served in clear glasses common in those days, which the stallholder will wash and reuse. There's also a dish of cut chilli in black sauce for the pineapple slices. Nice. No, this tubewell doesn't supply drinking water, this kind of tubewells are to ensure the supply of water in the shrimp cultivation field (commonly called gher in Bengali). On the other hand that boy was on collecting drinking water for his family from a far away pond. This photo was taken in a island called Gabura near Sundarbans, which was affected by the cyclone Aila. From that time there are scarcity of drinking water.

Anchor beer advertisement

Anchor Beer claims to be "The Smooth Pilsener Beer" and to be fair the beer is pretty smooth and can be drunk in sizeable quantities without much effort or too many negative after effects.

The beer I sampled was brewed and canned by Cambodia Brewery Limited under licence from Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd. Promoted as a premium quality beer it is reasonably priced right in the middle (perhaps lower middle) of the beer market and competes with other beers in the same price range by being affordable AND drinkable.

It is another beer with an "on can" biography where they state, "Since 1933, Anchor Beer has been brewed in the European Pilsen tradition using the finest quality hops to give you a smoother taste. Enjoy." Modest and brief they are factful in what they say - It is a Pilsen and it does have a smooth taste.

The beer suffered a long period of decline throughout the Asia-Pacific during the 1990s afterwhich it was repositioned less as a premium drink and was made more acceptable to mass market through increased availability and marketing.

In Cambodia the beer is omnipresent in most western orientated restaurants and bars where it is quite often the beer of choice easily outselling Angkor Beer (Anchor is pronounced AnSHor in Cambodia).

It is not a bad beer and despite its relatively unnattractive red, blue and silver can the beer is a success in terms of taste and commercial ability.

McLagan Drinking Fountain

By HIS

Location: Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland

The drinking fountain was presented to the town of Bathgate in 1878 by the wife of the local Member of Parliament, Peter McLagan, to provide free clean gravity fed water from the filters on Drumcross Road. Peter McLagan was a land owner, shale mine operator and an advocate of the Temperance cause which made the donation of a drinking fountain especially meaningful.

The structure originally stood on a two tiered plinth in the middle of the road at the crossroads of Hopetoun Street, North Bridge Street, Livery Street and Engine Street (later named George Street). Photographic evidence reveals that it was a gathering place when the local pub closed its doors for the night. Its position in the middle of the road interfered with traffic flow and was most likely the reason it was moved to the lower end of George Street known as the Steelyard.

Drinking fountain number 8 from Walter Macfarlane & Co.’s catalogue was manufactured at the Saracen Foundry at Possilpark in Glasgow, the most prolific architectural iron founders in the world. The structure is 9 feet 6 inches high and consists of four columns, from the capitals of which consoles with griffin terminals unite with arches formed of decorated mouldings. Griffins are symbols of guardians of priceless possessions.

Rope moulded cartouches within each lunette host the image of a crane, and a dedication shield states; Presented by Mrs. McLagan of Pumpherston in commemoration of the opening of the Bathgate Water Works, 30th May 1878; and, Rescued by Bathgate Community Council and restored by West Lothian District Council.’ On two of the sides provision was made for receiving an inscription using raised metal letters; whilst on the other two sides was the useful monition, Keep The Pavement Dry. Civic virtues such as temperance were often extolled in inscriptions on drinking fountains.

The structure is surmounted by an open filigree dome. The fountain was provided with a lantern at the behest of the purchaser. However, the lamp did not survive the move to the new location at the Steelyard and a crown with a pattée cross finial now stands in its stead.

Under the canopy stands the font (design number 7) 5 foot 8 inches high. The basin which has a scalloped edge and decorative relief is supported by a single decorative pedestal with four pilasters and four descending salamanders, a symbol of courage and bravery. A central urn with four consoles offer drinking cups suspended by chains. The terminal is a crane.

Symbolism was popular in Victorian times. Griffins are symbolic of guardians of priceless possessions, salamanders display bravery and courage that cannot be extinguished by fire, and cranes are recognized as a symbol of vigilance.
