Description in English and Dutch
Mr. Monster was taking a leisurely stroll along the canal in Kinderdijk, admiring the magnificent reflections of the clouds in the water. As he stopped to take in the breathtaking view, he began to dream away to the past and found himself learning about the incredible history of water management and windmills in the Unesco area. He was transported back to a time of innovation and discovery, when Dutch engineers perfected the art of controlling the water and safeguarding their land from the ever-present threat of flooding. He saw the development of the windmills from their early days to the 19th century, when they were used to pump water to and from the canals. As he continued to take in the scenery, Mr. Monster knew that he had been granted a unique opportunity to learn about the history of the area and all that it entailed.

Dreighouding:
This photo was taken in Enkhuizen.
Threat attitude:
Two grebes in a threatening pose, apparently there is a disagreement here about territory boundaries.
This ritual is repeated several times...
The whiskers of both birds are spread out and the beak points in the direction of the opponent.
The threat becomes more intense, the feathers on the back stand up and the wings are stretched.
The grebes fly into each other's hair, or rather, into each other's feathers, while chatting loudly.
The birds hack at each other with their pointed beaks.
An arc of water droplets frames the fighting birds.
"A society defined by fences
And talking of violence
Shrinks to miniature.
When stupidity is exposed
It may become explosive."
Een samenleving bepaald door hekken
En door praten over geweld
Krimpt tot een miniatuur.
Als stompzinnigheid wordt blootgelegd
Kan het explosief worden.

In the vast, arid landscape of eastern Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan, lies the ancient David Gareja Monastery complex. Carved directly into sandstone cliffs, the site is home to dozens of rock-cut cells, chapels, and passageways — silent witnesses to over fourteen centuries of monastic devotion. One of the most striking features is the stone tower perched high on a rocky outcrop, standing alone and overlooking the desolate terrain. This modest structure, built from irregular stone blocks, served as a watchtower. From here, monks could survey the surrounding area and detect approaching threats. During times of danger — from Mongol invasions to Persian raids — the height offered a strategic advantage, not for counterattack, but for protection, prayer, and preparation. Just below the tower, the entrances to ancient monastic caves are still visible, once inhabited by hermits who withdrew from worldly life to live in spiritual isolation. This combination of rugged nature and human humility makes David Gareja a truly unique place. Yet it’s not only history that lives on here — the natural world remains ever-present. The windswept ridges and rocky solitude attract numerous birds of prey. Hikers in the area often spot golden eagles soaring overhead, or short-toed snake eagles gliding low across the plains. Buzzards, falcons, and even vultures are also seen in the Kakheti and Kartli regions. The tower at David Gareja is more than just a remnant of Georgia’s Christian heritage — it stands as a symbol of stillness, vigilance, and deep connection to the landscape. A place where time, faith, and nature converge.
The tower symbolizes solitude, vigilance, and spiritual retreat — a silent witness to centuries of devotion. Carved into the harsh rockscape, it stands isolated yet firmly rooted in the landscape. In the upper right, a bird of prey glides effortlessly through the sky, embodying the wild spirit of this remote region. Its presence feels natural, even inevitable, in a place shaped by silence and wind. The architecture does not dominate but blends with the earth, shaped as much by necessity as by faith. The scene is a powerful example of how human presence and nature can exist in balance, each amplifying the other’s beauty.
Wees alsjeblieft verstandig. Voor ons aller veiligheid.
Trust
In these strange and uncertain times with the threat of the coronavirus looming over us all, wherever we are, it's good to keep some hope and trust. Also, it remains important to keep a safe distance from each other. Everything to stay healthy.
Be safe, people. And please be responsible.
-The port of Chania town.
A walk through the old town of Chania town feels like a journey through time. Monuments from different periods of dominations recall times gone by. The harbor was built by the Venetians and was an important center for their military fleet. By threat of Turkish side, plans were made in the 16th century to fortify Chania City. Next to the entrance of the harbor a fort was built, which was expanded with bastions.
For a long time the port was an important trading center. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was gradually calmer. Ships were getting bigger, so they often had to go outside the port anchor. The traffic thus moved to the port of Souda. Today the port of Chania town mainly used by small boats and yachts.

Threat
The Schotersingel in Haarlem in an autumn mood. After waiting more than half an hour, the clouds finally revealed the sun behind me, which cast beautiful light on my composition, with dark, threatening clouds in the background. This image was worth the wait. Even though Rosie, my oldest daughter, didn't really appreciate me being fifteen minutes late – due to this photo; I can't make it any prettier than it is – for picking her up after gymnastics. The poor thing.
Welke weg volgen we......
This photo was made in the southern dunes of Katwijk.
A beautiful sunny day in the dunes.
And a threat from the sea, accompanied by a beautiful cloud cover.
Which way do we follow ......
Hopefully my last picture of 2021 will be one without mouth caps and the threat of a potentially deadly corona infection. I wish you a healthy 2021!

11Fountains are a group of fountains in the Frisian eleven cities that were placed in the context of Leeuwarden-Fryslân in 2018 (Cultural Capital of Europe).
After having visited some of the 11 fountains (and cities) last May, I returned in October to tour Friesland's coastal cities.
Bats are intriguing, useful animals that are crucial to the ecological system because they hunt insects. In Asian culture, the bat symbolizes wealth, happiness and a blessed old age. For us he symbolizes both dark forces and a positive, saving force. Think of Batman, or the facades of the great cathedrals where he, in the form of gargoyles, keeps the demons at bay. That fits beautifully with the burned down Broerekerk in Bolsward. The stairs on the back of the bat made by the Belgian artist Johan Creten invite the visitor to symbolically overcome the bat. And… to transcend themselves.

And consisted of a huge amount of concrete, more than 2,300 cubic meters. This Leitstand which is popularly called the "car bunker" consists of 3 floors. On the bottom floor was the auditor's office, A room where equipment was placed and a room for the officers. This space was therefore the largest space of the bunker and was below the ground level. This imposing bunker is located in the middle of the four artillery bunkers and could, in the event of an enemy threat, pass the measured information through a bunker telephone to the artillery bunkers that could then fire.

FlickrFriday: Remember
Among all the names on the Names Memorial, I found the names of twins: Mindel and Perl. They were gassed in Auschwitz at the age of three.
Remember that this could also happen to you or me: when those in power and their followers decide that one or more groups of people are a threat to society and therefore must be removed. Think of groups with a certain skin colour, religion, culture, political beliefs, migrants or whatever...
The twins Mindel and Perl from Scheveningen love to play together all day long. When they are rounded up during a raid, the little girls cry very hard. Together with their mother, Mindel and Perl end up in Westerbork, after which they are sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp. They spend three days and nights in an overcrowded train. In Auschwitz, the gas chamber awaits them.
Photos of the twin and their parents can be found here:
