11Fountains are a group of fountains in the Frisian eleven cities that were placed in the context of Leeuwarden-Fryslân in 2018 (Cultural Capital of Europe).
After having visited some of the 11 fountains (and cities) last May, I returned in October to tour Friesland's coastal cities.
Bats are intriguing, useful animals that are crucial to the ecological system because they hunt insects. In Asian culture, the bat symbolizes wealth, happiness and a blessed old age. For us he symbolizes both dark forces and a positive, saving force. Think of Batman, or the facades of the great cathedrals where he, in the form of gargoyles, keeps the demons at bay. That fits beautifully with the burned down Broerekerk in Bolsward. The stairs on the back of the bat made by the Belgian artist Johan Creten invite the visitor to symbolically overcome the bat. And… to transcend themselves.

11Fountains zijn een groep fonteinen in de Friese elf steden die in het kader van Leeuwarden-Fryslân in 2018 (culturele hoofdstad van Europa) zijn geplaatst.
Nadat ik afgelopen mei enkele van de 11 fonteinen (en steden) had bezocht, keerde ik in oktober terug om de kuststeden van Fryslân te verkennen.

Vleermuizen zijn intrigerende, nuttige dieren die met hun jacht op insecten cruciaal zijn in het ecologisch systeem. De vleermuis staat in de Aziatische cultuur symbool voor rijkdom, geluk en een gezegende ouderdom. Bij ons symboliseert hij zowel duistere krachten als een positieve, reddende kracht. Denk aan Batman, of aan de gevels van de grote kathedralen waar hij, in de vorm van waterspuwers, de demonen op afstand houdt. Dat past prachtig bij de afgebrande Broerekerk in Bolsward. De trap op de rug van de door de belgische kunstenaar Johan Creten gemaakte vleermuis nodigt de bezoeker uit om de vleermuis symbolisch te overwinnen. En… om zichzelf te overstijgen.
