St Mary, Benefield, Northamptonshire
I was cycling the lonely, winding lanes between Corby and Oundle, and from Brigstock it was a long four miles, mostly uphill, to my next port of call. Benefield parish (perhaps disappointingly, the name is pronounced ben-er-field) is divided between two villages about a mile apart, Upper Benefield and Lower Benefield. I was heading for Lower Benefield, which on my map was several contour lines below the road and so I wondered if I would get a view of the village before I got to it. Suddenly, I turned a corner, and directly in front of me was a gorgeously thin spire and tower top, looking as if I could almost reach out and grasp it. I hurtled down to the village level and the rest of the church revealed itself as St Mary's church.
Locked, no keyholder. Now, I wasn't having this. Benefield was chosen as one of the hundred best Northants churches for a year of Open Church Celebration 2018 by the Bishop of Peterborough, 'that we may be open so that others may be open to the glory of our worship'. However, I checked the Celebration website and it said 'this church is usually locked!' so I think the Bishop was perhaps sending a message to parishes like Benefield, which is good of him as Peterborough is very much an open church diocese already. There was a telephone number on the website, and it was also in the porch, the churchwarden, so I rang her up and explained my desires and she said she'd come straight away (I wouldn't like to think she was afraid that I'd report her to the Bishop or anything, but there we are). In fact it was about twenty minutes, and it was her husband and son who turned up, but that was good enough of course. He was a small, jolly red-faced man, his son a younger copy, the very model of a Midlands farmer, and it didn't surprise me in the least when he told me 'we farm over in the next valley'.
St Mary is a remarkable church. It is a huge church, built all in one go in the 1840s as a model of Tractarian worship, bankrolled by the Watts-Russell family. Thus, it is one of the earliest examples of its kind, almost twenty years before All Saints Margaret Street. The architect was John McDuff Derrick, and some of the details are nearly pre-ecclesiological, so early is it. The exterior is notable also for the the revived tradition of headstops, something entirely new at this date. Some are in a faux-medieval style, including one beside the west window of an agonised man with toothache, while others are clearly early Victorians, including that beside the window to the short north transept which depicts the young Queen Victoria herself.
You step inside to a sad gloom, as so often in churches built all in one go at this time. The tradition prospered through the century here, and the rood screen and reredos are by Ninian Comper, as at St Peter in Ely, a church of fully half a century later. But the congregation is down to twelve, and as we have seen it is just left locked. I dare say it will be declared redundant in the near future, and go to the CCT, and we will all be able to see it.
From Benefield I took a narrow gated road to Glapthorn. The gates were open, but the cattle grids held back a number of curious cows who I had to move to get past. Luckily for me I'm a country boy at heart.
Nifty velvet drapes in 70s colors, on the rear atrium floor. Plus an 8-track tape and a book. I believe there was a console stereo here, too, similar to the one by the basement BBQ.
