A medium sized hawker flying in late summer to early autumn. It is also called as horsebiter, but that's only a name. They are eating insect such as flying ants. This species may be confused with Aeshna juncea. Feeds mainly in the afternoon and evening. When perched they hang vertically to catch as much sunlight as possible.

The male is brown with blue markings. The female (above) is brown with yellow markings.

Cropped and resized the image I posted previously to display the delicate and fragile membranes and veins in the dragonfly wings.

There's something magical about dragonflies

On the ground, after a night of rain.

I was photographing airplanes at the Battle Creek Air Show, when this lady landed on the fence in front of me and posed for quite awhile.

It's been extremely windy here and I'm wondering if this is why I found this little fiery skimmer dragonfly struggling in our pool. They have such a mastery of the sky, but perhaps the wind we received was just too much. They are so fragile, one wonders how on earth they survive any breeze at all.

After this shot, I took it to a warm sandstone rock in the hopes it might dry out and recover. I had to go out for while, s I couldn't stay to see what happened - but it was gone when I returned home.

I could watch a bird eating a dragonfly. It left the wing of the dragonfly behind.

Aufgabe FOTOKLICKE: Struktur

I was photographing this dragonfly wing that I found on the ground, when an ant came and photobombed my photo! It ended up being my favorite dragonfly wing photo.

This little chappy was quite happy to let me get in real close, right up to minimum focus distance to capture this portrait image. Quite happy with how this came out.

I came across this dragonfly sitting among these pink flowers during my recent visit to the University of British Columbia's Botanical Garden. I have always had a fascination for the intricate structure of dragonfly wings. The dragonfly looked so lovely that I could not resist taking a shot. The photo was taken in June 2023, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy and stay well.

P.S. I have finished all of the planting in our flower and vegetable gardens. Now it is time for maintenance. Who said gardening was relaxing. ;)

The City of London Information Centre looked like it was having a quiet day yesterday with most people having stayed away from the area for fear of being caught up in demonstrations surrounding the G20 event. A great opportunity to get up close to the building and grab a few shots with my trusty G9. It's the same structure as in this shot from last summer.

I photographed this dragonfly at rest in my garden. I have always found the dragonfly, especially the wings, a marvel of engineering. The photo was taken in June 2019, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

The green darner or common green darner (Anax junius), after its resemblance to a darning-needle, is a species of dragonfly in the family Aeshnidae. One of the most common and abundant species throughout North America, it also ranges south to Panama. It is well known for its great migration distance from the northern United States south into Texas and Mexico. It also occurs in the Caribbean, Tahiti, and Asia from Japan to mainland China. It is the official insect for the state of Washington in the United States.

hovering on the edge of stillness, the dragonfly reads the wind like a note in a score — weightless, listening, almost gone. against the faded backdrop of summer light, time briefly hesitates before the inevitable release.

iPhone 6 + Macro Lens

This was a handheld study done with my macro lens. The dragonfly had made a brief appearance in my store one day, and I tried to take some good photos, but I don't think any of them really looked good. The next day, I couldn't find it, and figured it must have either flown out with a customer, or died someplace. The latter turned out to be true.

One day, weeks later, I was straightening up the showroom, and the dragonfly was on the floor dead. Its wings were the only thing still beautiful on the insect, as the color had gone from beautiful greens and blues to brown. I took it home, and attempted some shots. This was one of my favorites.

MM plastic for 7/21……

It sure would be unique in the group pool…. giggling

I had so many to choose from bc I kept finding cool plastic things that were small enough to fit the MM parameters. Finally settled on this one!

No clue how I’ll do a size verification on this but I really like it and my sense is that it fits!

(***update: persistence!! It’s about 3.4cm)

A macro photograph with 2 minor edits in photoshop: the black was increased in the levels and the hue was changed (originally the image was brown, not blue).

What is it? It is a section of the printed-cork cover from my previous post of handbound books.
