Eastern Screech Owl Food Cache - 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC)

View On Black

When I woke up this morning and didn't see a hole in the Owl box, I thought, "Great, a chance to take owl pics in day light!", but then when I took a closer look I realized I was seeing something else entirely!

I can't say for certain what's going on there, but it seems as though the Screecher had a good night hunting last night, killed more birds than it could eat in one sitting, and decided to save the left-overs for another day. The amazing thing (to me anyway) is how it seems to be using it's left-overs as a "draft dodger". It's about 20 F today so a little something in the hole to keep out the cool breeze seems like a very good idea. It also occurred to me that the rising heat from the owl in the box might also keep the body from freezing, making for warmed-over left-overs the next day, with the added benefit of keeping out the noise of scolding birds (grieving for their lost friend), like the Titmouses I've often seen hanging from the roof and screaming into the hole during the day.

I also noticed some jays having a look at a potential meal, but they know who lives there, and thought better of it after figuring out the dead bird was too heavy to fly off with, and eating it on the ground under the Owl box would be a very bad idea!

. . . Just like Nascar drivers get a free ride behind the car in front of them, these Canadian Geese are doing a similar thing! The lead bird has the most wind resistance, while the ones behind call out and encourage him/her. The ones behind switch with the leader so that one bird doesn't do all the heavy lifting. Must be they watch a lot of FOX Sports!

The last day of the National Western Stock show, this is the finals for the heavy weight pull - Horse's weight per team went from 3900 which is what this team's weight was plus a young team with the guy stating he was just giving them some experience. This sled weight was 12,500 lbs I believe - this team also won pulling the sled weight of 17.500 lbs in one pull. The only team that did it. 7 teams with the weight from 3900 up 5500 lbs in this heavyweight Draft Pull finals

Drafting Now. A little over-sized for the standard vignette, but it was a necessary evil to fit in the plotter

Ok this one is just for fun… a couple of months ago I was doodling some Lego with my kid and we ended up building what it was going to become the first draft for the actual microscale PA-51Locusta, I took a couple of quick shots and gave the "weird looking spaceship with the chariot wheels as rotors" back to my kid to play with it.

Last month I actually used the pics as reference to start building the final model, they may look quite different but they are very related to each other :)

Thanks to everyone who takes time to comment, and fave my photo.

very quick draft for new work.LIMBO STRIKES.

10 min pencil on paper

After a year-and-a-half at Justin's, we FINALLY went and got our drafting table so I could prep fashion.

The top is a torsion box made from a grid of pine strips sandwiched between 2 sheets of 1/4 inch tempered hardboard. This design produces a light wight top that is perfectly flat. We used hardboard instead of plywood because we thought that it would provide a smoother surface for drawing.

Not our first, nor our last draft. I had one shot to get this in before Alex through something at me. Drafting/Fantasy Football is SERIOUS business. LEGGO!
