These Roman numerals on the bow of the Picton Castle are useful for determining the draft (or draught) of the ship. The water line is right at X and the upper numbers are reflected over the numerals I - IV.
A draft horse I think...

Old homes tend to be a bit drafty, so I got a Draft Dodger for the door. A little extra protection is always a good thing!
I went out looking to so some plein car sketching today, but no luck. I couldn't get inspired.
Luckily, though, I'd been inspired to try some still life work by the nice stuff in floodfish's stream (and website). So I sat down tonight to get the painting monkey off my back by doing some still life work.
My intention was to try to use chinese white to simulate gouache, but that didn't work out as planned.
Sketched in black prismacolor, with manganese blue and raw sienna with touches of chinese white and payne's gray watercolor in a large watercolor Moleskine.
This pair of draft horses were pulling a wheeled wagon taking groups of people to a field were you could cut your own Christmas tree. Russell Tree Farm in Starksboro, VT.
