Every Autumn, draft horses and oxen from all over New England are preparing for the numerous agricultural fairs . They will be hitched up with heavy harnesses to sleds loaded with large blocks of concrete, which they will pull as far as they can. Usually, they are in two- horse teams, and provide an amazing display of enormous strength. Horses are measured in hands, and one hand is four inches. The measurement is taken from the hoof to the withers, or the base of the neck, right about where the front of a saddle would go. Most common draft (draught) horses measure between 16 and 18 hands high (hh), and weigh about 1,500 to 1,800 pounds. The horse shown is a breed called American Cream, and is a heritage variety bred only in the U.S.. It is quite rare, as there were only 308 registered in 2006. Other breeds include Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons, and Shires. The largest on record is a Shire named Sampson from Bedfordshire, England. He foaled in 1846 and measured 21.25 hands , and weighed 3,300 pounds when fully grown.

From the September 24, 2005 protest against the continuation of the Iraq war, these two were my favorite protesters. Understatement can say so much.
As a Town Constable and Animal Control Officer I am sometimes called on to investigate animal cruelty. I got a complaint about a draft horse who had a severely damaged rear leg and could not get off the ground. As you can see the horse is fine, all 1800 pounds in working order.
