According to legend Dr. Jacob Ankh invented many of the wonders of the Egypto-Dutch Empire. Children often play a game called "What did Dr. Ankh invent?" It goes like this:

"Dr. Ankh, did you invent the refrigerator?

"Yes, I invented the refrigerator," Dr. Ankh said coldly.

or

"Did you invent the espresso machine, Dr. Ankh?"

"Yes, I invented the espresso machine," Dr. Ankh replied java-ially.

And so on. You might wish to share your favorite Dr. Ankh invention below.

Dr. Crawford W. Long, renowned physician, pharmacist and inventor of anesthesia - God bless him - was born in Danielsville on Nobember 1, 1815. He graduated from a local academy at age 14 and attended the University of Georgia (where he shared a room with Alexander H. Stephens) as well as colleges in Kentucky and Pennsylvania before returning to Georgia a skilled surgeon.

Laughing gas parties were quite fashionable at the time and C.W. Long observed that while under the influence of inhaled ether, a person could receive falls or blows and have no pain from these accidents let alone remember them. He became convinced that a person would become insensible to pain if sufficiently etherized.

C.W. Long used ether the first time on March 30, 1842 (beating William T. G. Morton by four years) to remove a tumor from the neck of a Mr. James M. Venable. The entry in Long's account book reads as follows: "James Venable / March 30 - Ether and excising tumor...$2.00."

Long subsequently removed a second tumor from Venable and used ether anesthesia in amputations and childbirth. The results of these trials were not published until 1848 and this is probably why Morton was at first believed to be the inventor of anesthesia. Fact of the matter is, both Morton and Long had the bright idea at approximately the same time.

Long moved to Athens in 1951 where he and his brother operated a drugstore on Broad Street across from the college campus.

Dr. Long died in Athens, GA, on June 16, 1878. A small but very informative anesthesia museum is operated in downtown Jefferson (Jackson County).
