On a brush-laden desert hillside above an arroyo of long untended farmland, the shadows from a cluster of joshua trees streak downhill as if they were dark liquid, obeying the law of gravity. The farmland was once watered by an old pump house (www.flickr.com/photos/159681486@N05/53142254477/in/datepo...), just out of the picture on the left, but appears now a part of the dry, open flatland leading down to the Mojave riverbed, beyond the trees in the distance.

After meeting a northbound manifest train at the top of Rich Mountain, loaded CPKC grain train G362 descends the hill as it heads south on the cool evening of Sunday, January 26, 2025.
Downhill Demesne sunset - 10th May. Looking out over Downhill beach, Benone strand and the distant Inishowen peninsula in County Donegal.
To the left you can see the train travelling along the line from Coleraine to L'Derry, it has to be one of the most scenic railway journeys in the country.
Michael Palin described the train journey between Londonderry/Derry and Coleraine as “one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world”.
BNSF 5374 and company give their dynamic brakes a good workout as they head down the backside or east slope depending on how you look at it of Cajon Pass, with a camouflaged Union Pacific military train heading for West Yermo. The train out of Fort Bliss Texas had a pretty quick run up Cajon Pass going from Slover (Palmdale Cutoff starting point) to Summit in under 90 minutes which for a Union Pacific train is in the top percentile for making the grade over the Santa Fe. Once at Yermo the train will be emptied at sent out somewhere else for another load of equipment to be stored out in the dry deserts of California for the winter time.

BNSF 7864 takes an empty ethanol train downgrade at Austin on MRL's 3rd Sub. Momentarily the train will swing through the big horseshoe curve to turn back eastward towards Helena.
Things are starting to get a little warmer by early May in this part of Montana. Signs of spring come forth as the hillsides begin to turn green.

Sunrise this morning at Downhill Beach looking towards Mussenden Temple.
Mussenden Temple is a small circular building located on cliffs near Castlerock in County Londonderry, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland.
It was built in 1785 and forms part of the estate of Frederick Augustus Hervey, the 4th Earl of Bristol, Bishop of Derry. Built as a library and modelled from the Temple of Vesta in Italy, it is dedicated to the memory of Hervey's cousin Frideswide Mussenden.
Over the years the erosion of the cliff face at Downhill has brought Mussenden Temple ever closer to the edge, and in 1997 the National Trust carried out cliff stabilisation work to prevent the loss of the building.
The inscription around the building reads, "Suave, mari magno turbantibus aequora ventis e terra magnum alterius spectare laborem." "Tis pleasant, safely to behold from shore / The troubled sailor, and hear the tempests roar." The quotation is from Lucretius De Rerum Natura, 2.1-2
Now part of the National Trust property of Downhill Estate & Mussenden Temple, the grounds encompassing Mussenden Temple, and its manor house (Downhill Castle) are open to the public all year, from dawn to dusk. The temple itself is open on certain days, and admission is free. The Temple offers views westwards over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan Point and County Donegal and to the east Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair Head.
The temple obtained a licence to hold civil wedding ceremonies in 2007.

When the Wisconsin & Southern train T4 hit home rails at Waukesha right about sunrise on this cloudy day, I was hoping for enough light to get this shot before the autumn color was gone. I rushed as quickly and as legally possible from home to county S west of Eagle, only to find that the T4 was stalled on the grade near milepost 25, this is milepost 35. After cutting off their train and sanding the grade they were able to get the tonnage over the damp, leave covered silver ribbons and continue the run toward Milton. A lousy trip for T4's crew, netted this shot of them drifting downgrade through the Southern Kettle Moraine, with dynamic brakes howling as they hold back the tonnage.

You could pick your weather on Monte Sano this morning. At the overlook, it was windy with good visibility. But as soon as you went downhill, fog.
