Basically loops of a 2-mile course, with a choice of doing 3 hours, 6 hours or 12 hours. So just like Crossfit - AMRAP for time.
It was held at a ski hill in Vernon, NJ, which is used as a downhill mountainbiking course in the summer.
The course was on rocky doubletrack and short- to knee-high grass ski slopes. 930' ascent, 930' descent. The downhill was tricky as grass was slick and there were all sorts of holes and water bars to navigate. The downhill also goes past the giant water park where all you heard was cold water splashing and people having fun. I could smell cold chlorinated water and it was all I could do not to hop the fence and dive in every time I passed. It was hot and humid that day, with no shade on the open ski slopes, so we were all sucking down bottles of water and electrolyte tablets. I drank 2x20 oz. bottles every loop.
It took me almost 6 hours to 'run' 18 miles (9 full loops). I hiked uphill and ran downhill, which is why only my quads ache today. Hamstrings and glutes had an easier time of it. I also have no ill effects from running the whole thing in hightop Keds - see attached photo :) It was in homage to David Lee Roth (Running with the Devil) that I wore gold lame and white headband. I could not fine gold lame shorts in time or would have worn those as well. Or maybe leopard print bike shorts? Hmmmm, must plan for next year...... :)"

A clean tank car does a respectable job of reflecting this fine summer sunset over the Niagara Escarpment. July 20, 2024.
Improvements are underway on the BNSF St. Croix sub in order to handle the marked increase in traffic the line has seen over the past few years. Work has begun on a project that will eliminate the numerous short single track sections and CTC islands on the line that create bottlenecks, as well as upgrading the signalling system.
Among the more visible changes, the route will lose some of its vintage charm as the classic CB&Q era searchlight block signals are replaced by a modern triple lens design. A partially installed set of the new signals is seen at Winona Jct., Wisconsin.

I rode up to Cathedral Park in St Johns for this week's coffee outside. From there I headed south to the Portland Farmers Market to get my breakfast burrito from Enchanted Sun.
As always I took a mildly circuitous route through alleys — some paved and some unpaved doubletrack. I rode some singletrack, sort of, through former industrial areas and even passed through a Superfund site.
I have this ride up on Ride with GPS: ridewithgps.com/trips/94537423
Some out of towners have just been tied down at the end of doubletrack in Pewaukee, just before sunset.
Who could have guessed that ten years later this would be home road power?

A couple of unknown EMU's from the type Plan V are aproaching Amsterdam Central station via the old North viaduct. In the background the, for that moment, 3 Singelgracht bridges. The left one is a tempory singeltrack one wich was replaced by a doubletrack bridge at the end of 1993. At the same time the left old Singelgrachtbridge was taken away to the scrapyard.
Loud and fun - this is a fantastic restored pipe organ, originally built in 1892 and since 1997 doing the rounds as part of the James H. Drew Exposition at a fairground (possibly) near you :)
It has to be said, it really is quite a spectacular organ both to look at and to listen to.

Alta Via del Sale. In torrential downpour. For the whole day from 9 am to nightfall.
It was Alps Divide Day two for me. This weather was forecasted, but the extend and intensity was extraordinary. And it’s not me saying this. This came from quite a lot of very experienced people. Even people living in the UK and in Scotland and who have participated in events like Silkroad Mountain Race. E.g. both @Jennytough and @nielcopeland said this rain had broken the scale.
And wow - I literally rode through rivers running across the trails. At times just one side, at times on both sides. And it was chunky. As usual, the photos don’t do the real roughness of the surface justice. It was no mellow riding. It wouldn’t have even on good gravel surface as I did 3.400 meters of climbing on that day. But indeed it was a constant search for rideable lines over the chunky trails. Right through the middle of the streams running down the trails or next to it.
As long as I was moving and moving upwards the temperature weren’t that much of a problem. But for the descending parts the wet body had few reserves. Still not at the halfway mark, after quite a bit of a descending part and still 20 km from the next rifugio (i.e. more than 2 hours away) I was shivering so hard once stopped. Luckily I found a small opportunity to pull out my puffy jacket under a bit of shelter and put in on under my rain jacket. It took a while to stop shivering after staring to move again, but I finally could comfortably „swim“ all the rest of the Via Sale. It took me until well after dusk, when the rain finally subsided a little above Tende but gave way to dense and wet fog.
This was quite the experience.

The track on the left is to March station and the main line East. Note how the single track passes through the centre of the bridge and not to the right as it used to be in double track days. The track to the right is for Peterborough traffic (West). The track closest to the camera is the Whitemoor head shunt. This double tracking was the same in steam days. The embankment far left hides a single line bridge used by goods traffic now filled in since it was no longer required?

Waking up, my legs were argumentative and threatening to cramp on me but the hourly weather report suggested I get my ass out the door and get on trail. Im glad I did as it turned out to be one of the best days I've spent on the bike in years. This was only my second ride on these trails this season, but the conditions were perfect for a few hours. Temps would be trail favorable until about 11 when the crust would turn to mush and I'd be rutting trails so I avoided that. And by the looks of the 7 day forecast, I wont have this opportunity again until next year. Somewhere under the snow in the back yard I have a few canoe's... I'm coming for ya's!

An empty coal train out of Alma pauses briefly for the conductor to reline the power plant switch. Once that's done the conductor will be taxied up to the cab and 9224 west will start its journey back to the coal fields on the wrong main as far as CTC Trevino. Between Trevino and Mears the St. Croix Sub crosses the Chippewa River on a single track bridge. After Mears the Alma empties will be on the westbound track. April 24, 1999.
