"Sleeping Beauty" (French: La Belle au bois dormant), or "Little Briar Rose" (German: Dornröschen), also titled in English as "The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods", is a classic fairy tale about a princess who is cursed to sleep for a hundred years by an evil fairy, to be awakened by a handsome prince at the end .

The good fairy, realizing that the princess would be frightened if alone when she awakens, uses her wand to put every living person and animal in the palace asleep, to awaken when the princess does. The fairy also summons a forest of trees, brambles and thorns that spring up around the castle, shielding it from the outside world and preventing anyone from disturbing the Princess.

Tunupa is a dormant volcano in the Potosí Department of southwestern Bolivia.

It stands on the northern side of the Salar de Uyuni at an elevation of 5,321 m (17,457 ft) on the Bolivian Altiplano.

Mt. Adams (with a peak of 12,300 feet elevation) is a dormant volcano located 34 miles east of Mt. St. Helens in southern Washington. The volcano is not considered extinct despite the absence of a major eruption in the last 1000 years.

Mt Adams is the second highest peak in Washington, surrounded by remote wilderness & old growth forests. Access is fairly easy on old dirt logging roads ....although sparsely marked.

Water clarity is outstanding on Takahiakh Lake and no motor traffic is allowed on the lake that contains 3 different species of fresh water trout.

The glacier on Mt. Adams is the second largest in the contiguous United States, cascading down from the 12,281 ft. summit ice cap.

Recently reactivated 603 forms part of the lash-up on Southern Shorthaul Railroad's loaded grain train 3242 from Calleen to Allied Pinnacle at Maldon.

Purchased by SSR back in April 2016, 603 has laid dormant since mid-2013 and was reactivated in December 2024, where it's planned to provide additional support in the Liverpool Ranges as a banker over Ardglen.

Unfortunately, there's no plan to make the locomotive a "lead unit" as it is not fitted with an ICE radio, however, it is planned to get a repaint. Although the scruffy look isn't so bad though?

In 2008, the dormant Erie Mining mainline came to life for a few weeks in August and September when several trainloads of fines underneath the dock were hauled back up to Hoyt Lakes.

On one of the first trips an ABBB set of F9's muscles a dozen loaded air dumps out of the Lake Superior basin to Cramer siding where the train would be assembled for the run to Hoyt Lakes.

For those of us that missed the Erie/LTV in regular service it was quite a glimpse into what once was.

Just 3 days later the 4 north towers (right) were blown down with many folk gathering at this spot to watch, sadly the spectacle was obscured by a heavy mist.

Loaded coal for the power plant at Terrell, North Carolina, heads down the north end of the old Clinchfield Railroad at Haysi. This is tunnel #8 known as the McClure Tunnel. 2x2 GE locomotives in DPU mode pull and push 108 loads mined at the Bailey Mine along the old Monongahela RR in southwestern Pennsylvania. The signal here guards a power switch at the other end of the 331-foot long curved tunnel. The switch leads to a coal mining branch known as the Haysi RR that now sits dormant as the mines closed years ago.

My visit to the peak district innevtably ended up with me waiting for conditions to change. The skies around me devoid of any cloud until we got into mid afternoon, and the start of some nice side light.

Tricky shooting trees against bright skies. A test on the dynamic range of the camera, but on PP too. It does help when you get a splash of evening light on the tree.

Tulips (Tulipa) form a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes (having bulbs as storage organs). The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly coloured, generally red, pink, yellow, or white (usually in warm colours). They often have a different coloured blotch at the base of the tepals (petals and sepals, collectively), internally. Because of a degree of variability within the populations, and a long history of cultivation, classification has been complex and controversial. The tulip is a member of the Liliaceae (lily) family, along with 14 other genera, where it is most closely related to Amana, Erythronium and Gagea in the tribe Lilieae. There are about 75 species, and these are divided among four subgenera. The name "tulip" is thought to be derived from a Persian word for turban, which it may have been thought to resemble. Tulips originally were found in a band stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia, but since the seventeenth century have become widely naturalised and cultivated (see map). In their natural state they are adapted to steppes and mountainous areas with temperate climates. Flowering in the spring, they become dormant in the summer once the flowers and leaves die back, emerging above ground as a shoot from the underground bulb in early spring.

Rows and rows of vines and fences at a vineyard in Healdsburg, CA.

The grape vines are pruned back during the winter and remain dormant until spring...which may come early this year with temperatures in the 70’s this week.

Last weekend on a trip with Erez, Dima and Shy to Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell area we were greeted with a very calm and beautiful morning on our first day. The skies where clear and the dormant volcano Öræfajökull was lit up with pink alpenglow.

Mt. Öræfajökull rarely sees this kind of light as all too often there are clouds on the horizon that block these colorful early morning rays. Luck was with us and the colorful light brought contrast to the ridges and glacial features of the snowy mountain.

Öræfajökull is the highest mountain and volcano in Iceland. One of the most feared aswell as it has violently erupted twice in historical times. Prior to the first eruption the area around it was challed Hérað which means shire being green and lush. After the eruption the area was flooded and covered in ash and volcanic debris. For decades after the eruption the area was uninhabited and since been called Öræfi which means badlands. For me from a photographers point of view this area is a dreamland.

Seemingly dormant for some time, but does seem rather clean. Typical Rover beige,or if you want to be sophisticated, champagne.

This old broken windmill (water pump) was once a vital part of an Iowa farmstead. No longer needed once electricity came to Iowa farms, it was left to decay. HWW.

Conrail 2806 & 6033 lead a Westbound train up the Meadville Line, just South of Alfred Station in Alfred, NY on June 25, 1978. This line is now run by the WNYP, but this stretch of track is currently dormant.

Had this lying Dormant for a while and while I'm on vacation I had this available to post. Figure is fully painted by me. Custom hairpiece as well. Enjoy and I hopefully have more images to post. Enjoy!

Another shot from one of my favourite locations along the SA coast. This time at low tide at dawn with some rocks standing out among the magenta coloured rocks . The area was carved out by an ancient glacier which has left some very interesting rock formations in the area with straight ridges a big feature. Processed on my new laptop - still getting used to the difference in colours and brightness - I suspect because of how bright the laptop is , this might look at little darker than I would usually put up.

life is uncertain and messy. i can be lured into wide-ranging yet fruitless tidying--my attempt to control the uncertainty. but it's when i let go, when i allow for the messiness of life, that i see most clearly and feel most connected.

The summit of Mt Taranaki is shrouded in clouds, but the blue sky promises a clear day ahead. Mt Taranaki, also known as Mount Egmont, is a dormant stratovolcano in the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. Taranaki holds cultural significance for the Māori people, and its summit provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, the Tasman Sea, and even the distant peaks of the central North Island.

“Dormant Wetlands Plants” — Dormant and dried wetlands plants reflected in the still water of a quiet wetland pond.

My first “real” visit of the season to my favorite migratory bird photography location did not go as planned. (Actually, I did stop there briefly a month ago and a half earlier, but things were still slow back then.) I was hoping for luminous tule fog and lots of geese and sandhill cranes. Instead I got a think gray elevated overcast and fewer birds than I expected. Ah, well, it happens… and when it does I try to find something else to photograph.

This is one of the “something else” photographs. The location is full of shallow ponds that form seasonally, and when they fill the summer’s plants still emerge from the still water and make fascinating reflections. And for this subject the very soft light from the overcast works well to reveal a few more of the plants’ details.

Santa Rita’s Vineyard is located 45 minutes away from Santiago. Placed in the foothill zone of Alto Jahuel, in Buin, the vineyard is surrounded by a extraordinary natural environment, where the wine tradition, the national culture of Chile and the gastronomy coexists.

The long-dormant storefronts of Thurmond, West Virginia were brought to life in the fall of 1986 when the town was chosen as the location for shooting the film “Matewan”, an historical account of the mining management/labor struggle in Matewan, WV. Not only was the town totally rebranded from a C&O mining community to a settlement on the N&W some 100 miles away, even the railroad elements underwent a makeover. Here the “iconic” C&O cantilever that was so sought after by rail photographers in its last years has been disguised as a full signal bridge and painted black. The signal maintainers better push away from the dinner table a little sooner if the railroad has to resort to publishing weight limits on the signal structures.

Grizzly Bears of the Canadian Rockies

Grizzly Bears (Ursus arctos) are unmistakable because of the large muscular hump on their shoulders. Grizzly bears are scavengers and omnivores, eating both plants and meat. Plants are the mainstay of their diet though, especially berries and roots.

In winter, food becomes scarce and the bears crawl into their dens to hibernate. Although bears do not truly hibernate, (their body temperature only dips slightly), they do become dormant in winter, usually in snow-dens, where females often have one to four cubs before spring.

Grizzly Bears have one of the lowest known reproductive rates of all North American land mammals. That rate is even lower for Grizzlies living here in the Canadian Rockies. Females have their first cubs at 5-8 years of age and may not become pregnant again for 4–5 years.

Grizzly Bears are particularly sensitive to human influence, and because of this we manage them carefully. We can gain information about the mountain park ecosystem by monitoring the grizzly bear population. Jasper currently supports a population of between 100–120 individuals.

Another start to a beautiful day in paradise. These are a group of islands in Sulawesi Indonesia, very remote and difficult to reach, but well worth it. Home to sea gypsies giant land crabs and a fresh water lake full of non stinging jelly fish and a dormant volcano. A fog-draped landscape of water and sky and clouds,, Central Valley, California.

Earlier today I was thinking about a particular sort of moment of consciousness that I’ve experienced a few times. It typically (though not that often!) comes when I’m in a natural place where more or less nothing is happening. It is hard to define precisely what these moments are or force them to happen, but when they do come they are palpable. But there’s a sense of immense stillness and almost a stoppage of time. For me it has come on a few occasions in the desert, alone on a windless and silent day, or in the mountains.

I think it could come in a place like this, too. At one point this week I paused and just sat quietly and took in what is actually happening most of the time in this wetlands location. The answer is: nothing obviously remarkable. A few birds move about slowly and almost silently (until the geese and cranes arrive!), the water is still, and the sky seems fixed and luminous. I’m not sure that a photograph can embody all of that, but perhaps it can be a reminder.
