Mount Taranaki, or Mount Egmont, is the centre of attention of the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is a dormant stratovolcano and one of the most symmetrical volcanic cones in the world. It is located in a national park with intensively-farmed dairy pasture reaching right up to the mostly-circular park boundary.
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi which last erupted 4000 years ago. At 13,796 ft (4,205 m) above sea level and over 33,000 ft (10,058 m) from the bottom of the ocean floor, Mauna Kea is the tallest sea mountain in the world. Its summit is home to the world’s largest observatory for optical, infrared and submillimeter astronomy. Research teams from eleven different countries operate 13 telescopes on the summit.
In Hawaiian mythology, Mauna Kea is home to the snow goddess Poli‘ahu. In ancient times, the summit was considered the realm of the gods and was kapu (forbidden) to all except the highest chiefs and priests.

Towering over the island of Maui and visible from just about any point, Haleakala Crater is a force of nature in every sense. At 10,023 feet above sea level, this dormant volcano is the stage for a breathtaking range of landscapes.
Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, "Kibo", "Mawenzi", and "Shira", is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa, about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) from its base, and 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. The mountain is part of the Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major climbing destination. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers and disappearing ice fields. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, while Kibo is dormant and could erupt again. Uhuru Peak is the highest summit on Kibo's crater rim.
Both Mawenzi and Kibo began erupting about 1 million years ago. They are separated by the "Saddle Plateau" at 4,400 metres.
Kibo is the largest cone and is more than 15 miles (24 km) wide at the "Saddle Plateau" altitude. The last activity here has been dated to between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago and created the current Kibo summit crater. Kibo still has gas-emitting fumaroles in the crater. Kibo is capped by an almost symmetrical cone with escarpments rising 180 metres (590 ft) to 200 metres (660 ft) on the south side. These escarpments define a 2.5-kilometre-wide (1.6 mi) caldera caused by the collapse of the summit. Within this caldera is the Inner Cone and within the crater of the Inner Cone is the Reusch Crater, which the Tanganyika government in 1954 named after Gustav Otto Richard Reusch upon his climbing the mountain for the 25th time (out of 65 attempts during his lifetime). The Ash Pit, 350 metres (1,150 ft) deep, lies within the Reusch Crater. About 100,000 years ago, part of Kibo's crater rim collapsed, creating the area known as the Western Breach and the Great Barranco.

Callejón Cañapa is a highly eroded dormant volcano, on the edge of the Atacama Desert in southwestern Bolivia. Cañapa has a long convoluted summit ridge with an elevation of 5895 metres. It is indicative of shifting in the volcanic center over time. This process left multiple caldera sites. This area of the Cordillera Occidental is packed full of old volcanoes clustered closely together. The mountain forms an enormous backdrop to the colorful lakes Cañapa and Hedionda. Telelens.

I realise there's something incredibly honest about trees in winter, how they're experts at letting things go.

We seem to be in our second winter - it's sunny but below freezing at night again....and all the buds were coming out!

Nemrut is a dormant volcano in Eastern Turkey, close to Lake Van. The volcano is named after King Nimrod who is said to have ruled this area in about 2100 BC. The most powerful eruptions of Nemrut occurred in the Pleistocene. Many small eruptions occurred during the Holocene, the last one in 1692. The top of the volcano is a large caldera that hosts three crater lakes.

I took this photo in 2002 at an elevation of 2258 meters with my Nikon FE10 SLR film camera.
In December 2013, I visited the Dormant Volcano Haleakala on Maui, HI. I didn't have a lens that would capture the entirety of the caldera. Lately, I took up the project of stitching together several shots which I hope capture the wonder of this amazing place.
Haleakalā (/ˌhɑːliˌɑːkəˈlɑː/; Hawaiian: [ˈhɐlɛˈjɐkəˈlaː]), or the East Maui Volcano, is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The western 25% of the island is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also referred to as the West Maui Mountains.
The tallest peak of Haleakalā ("house of the sun"), at 10,023 feet (3,055 m), is Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill). From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 11.25 km (7 mi) across, 3.2 km (2 mi) wide, and nearly 800 m (2,600 ft) deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cones. (information courtesy of Wikipedia)

I recently visited Maui again and felt as if I needed to get this image developed. I am reasonably happy with the outcome.

Winter finally coming to an end. Grass and winter wheat turning green but the trees still dormant waiting for warmer weather. . Snowed lightly this morning but by the time the sun set it was all gone. Temperature today was 1c (34f). This evenings sunset from Stuttgart, Germany.
Fleeting golden hour light totally transformed this Winter Woodland from its dreary now dormant state to a vivid warm colour scheme on my way home from last nights shoot.

This is my Christmas cactus. It's supposed to be dormant at this time of year, but for some strange reason they are still blooming. One at a time. Not in masses. There's another bud on its way. Very strange !!

A dormant terminal bud from an Ashe's magnolia (Magnolia ashei) tree
When I saw this tree, it looked quite odd with no leaves, flowers, and these very unique branches with whitish tips. But when I looked more closely at the white tips, which I later discovered were dormant terminal buds, I thought they were incredibly beautiful. The light was hitting the tree in the way that created the beautiful circular bokeh. To me, it looks like the branch is meditating.
