You will have to put up with more red headed woodpecker photos.

We had 3 in the yard today and they were not playing well.

I figure two are males and are trying to figure out who is dominant.

That photo is for another day.

Melanerpes erythrocephalus

Pleistocene-age fossils of Red-headed Woodpeckers—up to 2 million years old—have been unearthed in Florida, Virginia, and Illinois.

Big Male Musk Ox (Ovibos moschatus) checking out the photographers. He's the dominant male in his group . . . and his look makes it clear that he knows it. It's autumn in the Alaskan Arctic (mid-August) and the tundra erupted into brilliant color right after we arrived.

Zebra are grouped into harems where there is one dominant male with as many as six females and their foals in the group. All younger males with no harem form bachelor herds and wait until they are big enough to start their own harem. Zebra stallions will fight with each other for females and will even go as far as stealing females from one another.

A cornered zebra rears, kicks and bites in defense. There have been numerous recorded cases of zebras killing lions, generally by a swift kick to the head that at the very least breaks the jaw, resulting in the cat's eventual starvation. (Multiple sources)

This stag was the most dominant at Bushy park in this years rut.

He had a harem in excess of 20 hinds. There was another dominant male, but when they met and clashed, this one always won.

The rut is all but done now, on this day, he spent some time bellowing, very little time chasing subordinates away (you can see one in the left hand side of the shot ) and a lot of time resting and sometimes having a bite to eat.

His harem still consisted of over 20, but they were more inclined to wander without him in pursuit. Great to watch.....and photograph.

I took this shot as low as possible to make him look even more impressive.

The remnants of an outflow dominant supercell quickly turning into a shelf cloud. What made this one interesting was the lighting. When the base broke off from the rest of the cell, it allowed the light behind to enter, giving it the backlit look. Doesn't happen too often. Grand Bend, Ontario. July 29th, 2020.

A large bull Elk in Jasper NP watching over his harem that was close by. Dominant bulls follow groups of cows during the rut, from August into early winter. A bull will defend his harem of 20 cows or more from competing bulls.

A large dominant male orangutan assumes a classic pose hanging from the trees in the jungle of Tanjung Puting National Park in the Indonesian province of Kalimantan, Borneo. I called this guy Scar-face because of the distinctive large scar on his face above his upper lip.

Landscape architect Le Nôtre's garden was the dominant structure of the great complex, stretching nearly a mile and a half (3 km), with a balanced composition of water basins and canals contained in stone curbs, fountains, gravel walks, and patterned parterres. It's more a park than a garden! I like the misty view into the distance.

Hope you have a lovely Wednesday! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments, awards and faves.

A dominant feature in the form of a Dutch-style brick windmill has risen above the small village of Kunkovice since 1875. It served its original purpose until 1944. Then it fell into disrepair for many years, but in 2010-18 it underwent reconstruction and currently has a new use - as an accommodation facility with a capacity of up to 8 people.

Svému původnímu účelu sloužil až do roku 1944.

This is Otis - one of the more dominant bears in the area. Otis is about to catch a spawning Sockeye Salmon. To watch Otis and other bears in the area, click on the link . explore.org/live-cams/player/brown-bear-salmon-cam-brooks... For any sized animal, Otis is incredibly quick, but he is especially impressive given his enormous size. He can be identified by a light patch on his right shoulder.

This buck, also known as "Bruno", is going to be busy for the next few weeks. With the rut in full swing, he has a lot of does that will need his attention and a few other bucks that he will need to keep away from his harem. He will probably be working day and night.

“We can expect more pandemics to come, owing to factors like climate change, mass migration, globalization, and human encroachment on wildlife habitats. As temperatures change, people are moving around the world more rapidly than ever before … and intruding into ecosystems that used to be made up entirely of animals or insects. This, in turn, creates opportunities for humans to get infected by new diseases and disease strains.”

These Eastern Gray squirrels are an introduced species on Vancouver Island, and they are pushing out our smaller native Red squirrels. This is a shame and I really miss our native species, but it's wrong to dislike the new squirrels - after all it's not their fault that humans introduced them. I've learned to enjoy them as I have many of the other introduced animals that are now here to stay, like it or not.

A dominant white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) buck in South Texas - December 2021.

This is one of my all time favorite bucks. He's as dominant a buck as I've seen, and even the other mature bucks in the area gave him a wide berth. He's big, powerful, and mean. He was in his prime when I first photographed him in 2020, and looked even more impressive in 2021. I've heard he's still alive, and was really hoping to pay him a visit this year, but I couldn't make it work. I'm hoping he'll survive another season and I might be able to connect with him next year, when his age will certainly be in the double digits.

Commonly called the rainbow lizard, the red-headed agama's crimson crown is just the start of his display. While females and non-dominant males are not so brightly colored, a breeding male has a red or orange head, blue body and a tail that can be either red, deep blue or striped turquoise. The male's colors intensify during breeding season. They also change when he's contemplating a fight with another male. Preceding a fight, his head turns brown and white spots appear on his body. Females and young males are typically brown or olive green with a white belly, and a head that is slightly different color than their body.

Social Organization

Dominant male red-headed agamas establish a territory and govern a group of ten to 20 females and juveniles within the territory. Subordinate males, if allowed to remain, must be submissive to the male leader, such as allowing him the choice spot for basking in the sun. Males fight for territory and control of the group, with the winner gaining the right to breed with the females.

The Bugatti Type 51 series succeeded the famous Type 35 as Bugatti's premier racing car for the 1930s. Unlike the dominant Type 35s of the prior decade, the Type 51 (and later Type 53, Type 54, and Type 59) were unable to compete with the government-supported German and Italian offerings. This 1931 Bugatti Type 51 is seen at Prescott Speed Hill Climb.

The waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is a large antelope found widely in sub-Saharan Africa. It is placed in the genus Kobus of the family Bovidae.

The thirteen subspecies are grouped under two varieties: the common or Ellisprymnus waterbuck and the Defassa waterbuck. A sexually dimorphic antelope, males are taller as well as heavier than females.

Waterbuck are rather sedentary in nature. A gregarious animal, the waterbuck may form herds consisting of six to 30 individuals. These groups are either nursery herds with females and their offspring or bachelor herds. Males start showing territorial behaviour from the age of five years, but are most dominant from the age of six to nine.

The waterbuck cannot tolerate dehydration in hot weather, and thus inhabits areas close to sources of water.

Predominantly a grazer, the waterbuck is mostly found on grassland. In equatorial regions, breeding takes place throughout the year, but births are at their peak in the rainy season. The gestational period lasts for seven to eight months, followed by the birth of a single calf.

Waterbuck inhabit scrub and savanna areas along rivers, lakes and valleys. Due to their requirement for grasslands as well as water, the waterbuck have a sparse ecotone distribution. The IUCN lists the waterbuck as being of Least Concern.

The population trend for both the common and defassa waterbuck is downwards, especially that of the latter, with large populations being eliminated from certain habitats because of poaching and human disturbance. - Source Wikipedia

The distinct dominant of the town Fiľakovo on the Slovak-Hungarian frontier are the ruins of its Castle, which survived the Tartar raids in the 13th century.

The Castle is first referred to in the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the first half of the 15th century, widened and fortified in the 16th century. Although the fortification of the Castle was to defend it against the Turks, they conquered it in 1554.

It remained in the hands of the Turks for almost 40 years. It became the centre of the so-called Fiľakovo sanjak, (a Turkish administrative district) encompassing the whole of what is today the region of Poiplie. The Castle was re-conquered from the Turks only in 1593. The year 1682 was also fatal for the Castle, as the rebellious troops of Imrich Thököly conquered it and it has gone derelict since then.

The pentagonal Bebekova bašta bastion stands next to the entrance to the Castle. It has a roof and its gross shape has been preserved until the present day. In one of its external walls there is a half-sunk bulky canon ball, reminiscent of the 1682 siege. An exhibition of Castle and town history has been installed in the bastion. Remains of the Palace, a watchtower and a massive half-circle cannon bastion (the "clock" bastion) can still be seen in the upper castle. The Castle provides a wonderful view of the whole town and its environs.

The giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) is a South American carnivorous mammal. It is the longest member of the Mustelidae, or weasel family, a globally successful group of predators, reaching up to 1.7 m (5.6 ft). Atypical of mustelids, the giant otter is a social species, with family groups typically supporting three to eight members. The groups are centered on a dominant breeding pair and are extremely cohesive and cooperative. Although generally peaceful, the species is territorial, and aggression has been observed between groups. The giant otter is diurnal, being active exclusively during daylight hours. It is the noisiest otter species, and distinct vocalizations have been documented that indicate alarm, aggressiveness, and reassurance.

The giant otter ranges across north-central South America; it lives mostly in and along the Amazon River and in the Pantanal.

Its distribution has been greatly reduced and is now discontinuous. Decades of poaching for its velvety pelt, peaking in the 1950s and 1960s, considerably diminished population numbers. The species was listed as endangered in 1999 and wild population estimates are typically below 5,000. The Guianas are one of the last real strongholds for the species, which also enjoys modest numbers — and significant protection — in the Peruvian Amazonian basin. It is one of the most endangered mammal species in the neotropics. Habitat degradation and loss is the greatest current threat.

The giant otter shows a variety of adaptations suitable to an amphibious lifestyle, including exceptionally dense fur, a wing-like tail, and webbed feet. The species prefers freshwater rivers and streams, which are usually seasonally flooded, and may also take to freshwater lakes and springs. It constructs extensive campsites close to feeding areas, clearing large amounts of vegetation. The giant otter subsists almost exclusively on a diet of fish, particularly characins and catfish, but may also eat crabs, turtles, snakes and small caiman. It has no serious natural predators other than humans, although it must compete with other species, including the neotropical otter and caiman species, for food resources.

I was really happy to see them in the wild! It was one of my dreams and goals of my last trip to Pantanal!

Wishing everyone a wonderful Tuesday!

Thanks a lot for your visits, comments, faves, invites, etc. Very much appreciated!

Dominant male of the fast five coalition in Masai Mara hunting

🇬🇧 Perched high above the beach, the old town of Ulcinj (Stari Grad) is very different from that of Kotor or Budva. Much more residential than the latter, the old town of Ulcinj is a real maze of steep streets, where it's easy to get lost. Inside, there are a few bars and restaurants, but no shops or souvenir shops, which is what gives it its charm. The best thing to do is to wander through the narrow streets in the late afternoon, before settling down on the ramparts to admire the sunset over the pink sea.

Red-fronted lemurs are one of the few lemur species that is not female dominant. Red-fronted lemurs live in sociable, permanent groups of four to 18 animals. Group size averages eight to ten individuals, and as the group moves through the forest, they stay together by way of a regular series of grunts and contact calls.

This species is sexually dichromatic and the sexes are easily distinguished from each other: males are gray to gray-brown, and females are reddish-brown. Both sexes have pale patches over their eyes, and the males have a reddish crown.

The red-fronted lemur is protected in at least ten Madagascar reserves and is classified as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The diet of the red-fronted brown lemur varies with the season and the habitat. In the west, red-fronted lemurs' diets are more folivorous, including leaves, stems, bark, and sap; in the east, their diets are dominated by fruit. In some areas, these lemurs are important agents for seed dispersal. - Wikipedia

Burrells of Newsham near Richmond in County Durham didn’t operate any Duple Dominant IIIs but, as I have used its preserved Dominant II as the basis of my Dominant III, it seems appropriate to offer a version in the company’s livery. The trapezoid-windowed Mk III was a relatively rare variant of the Dominant family, developed to meet a Scottish Bus Group requirement. Two North East independents, The Eden of West Auckland and Gypsy Queen of Langley Park, took a single example each for a mix of private hire and local bus work (03-Jun-23).

Dominating the bay of Roccapina, in the extreme south of Corsica, here is the rock of the lion, so nicknamed because of its characteristic shape, which is more obvious when seen from the coastal road. I photographed it here from the Genoese tower which faces it, and which dominates the 2 beaches of Roccapina (www.flickr.com/photos/dbrothier/52146748829/) and Erbaju (www.flickr.com/photos/dbrothier/52199624382/)

The Autumn rut is one of our most spectacular native wildlife spectacles. So it was such a privilege to quietly watch this magnificent Red stag, reigning supreme over his chosen patch of the park. Roaring challenges to all comers & thundering after the lesser stags that dared to approach his hinds, he really was such an impressive sight.

He came in very close here, to subject me to a slow walk-by, never taking his eyes off me as he passed. Quite an experience.

Bond Bros of Willington in County Durham didn't operate any Dominant buses so this Bedford YRQ is entirely fictitious but, at the same time, representative of the type of vehicles favoured by many small independents. Bond's last new service buses had been a quartet of Plaxton Highway-bodied AEC Reliances. It could well have followed these with Dominant buses, had not the bus grant scheme made grant-specification coaches a more attractive proposition. The company only operated two service carriage services, Bishop Auckland to Willington and Willington to Oakenshaw, which became services 108 and 109 respectively in the county-wide numbering scheme.

In its heyday it was a friendly, family run business with a well presented fleet in a distinctive blue (slightly turquoise) and cream livery. Having survived deregulation unscathed in 1986, the end came a few years later - reputedly after the loss of local school contracts, for which it had acquired its first double-deckers. The stage carriage services initially passed to OK Motor Services (then part of the Go Ahead Group) and subsequently to Arriva, when Go Ahead closed the former OK depot in Bishop Auckland (16-Nov-09).
