Populonia is located in a dominant position on one of the promontories they form the gulf of Baratti and preserves fortifications of the XV century by the Lords of Piombino, the Appiani, as evidenced by the dragon symbol of the placed family above the entrance to the village. Populonia was an ancient Etruscan settlement, named Fufluna (from Fufluns, Etruscan god of wine and inebriation) or Pupluna, the only
Etruscan city built along the coast. It was one of the twelve cities of the Dodecapolis Etruscan, the main city-states that were part of Etruria, ruled by a lucumone.Together with Volterra it was one of the centers of greatest mining activity and of the metallurgical industry of the Etruscans. In the 6th century BC. lived his period of maximum splendor, coming to host many thousands of inhabitants. The decadence
of the ancient city began in the 1st century BC; from this date a slow and very long one descending parable characterized the life of Populonia. Barbarian invasions and looting decimated the population over the centuries, irreparably marking history of the settlement and putting an end to the great Etruscan city. The village of Populonia as we see it today it dates back to the 15th century. It was part of the Principality of Piombino, run by the Appiani family, originally from Pisa. It is due to their intervention the medieval layout of the village, in addition to the tower and fortifications. The current fortress was in fact begun by the Lords of Piombino Jacopo II Appiani and brought to term by Jacopo III Appiani in the mid-fifteenth century, following a precise project for the urban and demographic revitalization of Populonia, now reduced to a state of humble village.
Higger Tor is a dominant landmark of the Dark Peak, in the north of England's Peak District National Park. It's a gritstone tor overlooking the Burbage Valley and the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark to the south east, from where this shot was taken.
Dominant male Sika Deer will tolerate subordinates on their territory. Here the dominant greyer stag uses his voice in an assertive manner when confronting the somewhat smaller chestnut stag.
Thank you all for your kind responses.
This dominant bald eagle was checking out its vast domain here at Lake Meyer Park this morning. I haven't found any active bald eagle nests inside the park but they do nest next door on private property. Now that Lake Meyer is frozen over, this bald eagle's diet will switch from fish to roadkill for the winter.
Prompted by seeing a recent photograph of a Capuchin Monkey at Mato Grosso, Brazil, I decided to post some further images of my own encounter with these monkeys which are particularly gifted in their use of tools. This was the dominant male in action, highly respected by the rest of the troupe.
Capuchin Monkeys were given their name in the 15th century when Portugese explorers encountered them in the Americas and thougt their colouring and 'caps' of dark hair resembled the brown hoods worn by friars of Minor Capuchin.
Thank you all for your kind responses.
Dominant male Sika Deer will tolerate subordinates in their territory. These two stags headed a mixed herd of young male and female deer. Here the dominant greyer male confronts the subordinate chestnut coloured slightly smaller stag before the latter deferred and led the herd off up the hillside. Adult male Sika can weigh up to 64Kg. varying on habitat, with a maximum of 8 points on their antlers (only 2 on each antler point forward).
Sika Deer were originally introduced to the UK from Japan in 1860.
Thank you all for your kind responses.
The distinct dominant of the town Fiľakovo on the Slovak-Hungarian frontier are the ruins of its Castle, which survived the Tartar raids in the 13th century.
The Castle is first referred to in the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the first half of the 15th century, widened and fortified in the 16th century. Although the fortification of the Castle was to defend it against the Turks, they conquered it in 1554.
It remained in the hands of the Turks for almost 40 years. It became the centre of the so-called Fiľakovo sanjak, (a Turkish administrative district) encompassing the whole of what is today the region of Poiplie. The Castle was re-conquered from the Turks only in 1593. The year 1682 was also fatal for the Castle, as the rebellious troops of Imrich Thököly conquered it and it has gone derelict since then.
The pentagonal Bebekova bašta bastion stands next to the entrance to the Castle. It has a roof and its gross shape has been preserved until the present day. In one of its external walls there is a half-sunk bulky canon ball, reminiscent of the 1682 siege. An exhibition of Castle and town history has been installed in the bastion. Remains of the Palace, a watchtower and a massive half-circle cannon bastion (the "clock" bastion) can still be seen in the upper castle. The Castle provides a wonderful view of the whole town and its environs.

Black squirrels may be dominant in Canada but their spread into the US (and I think the UK) has been a bit of a mystery. Moving south from Canada is one explanation, another is they occur in nature all the time but for some unknown reason they are taking over. Still another story is that they were introduced because of their popularity and now they are taking over. Washington D.C. fits into this category as well as other places like New York City, Rock Island Arsenal, Kent State University, etc. However they got here, they are becoming a common sight in Blairstown, New Jersey. We started seeing them about 3 or 4 years ago and now they found our chicken coup. This one has become a regular, the white nose tells what it's been up to - corn powder from the chicken feed. We name them Blackie or Licorice.
They have a certain allure and do something that I've never seen a grey squirrel do. One day while headed out to the store I came across one that had been hit by a car. I stopped and moved it to the side of the road. On my return trip I saw the dead one and another one was standing at it's side. And the weirdest thing is I posted this pic on the town Facebook page and got the same observation by someone else.

Two dominant grey seals waiting at a fishing pier for scraps from a fishing boat. The boats will get rid of the chum and the seals know it. There were a lot of seals waiting but these two seemed to be dominant. The male is the black gray one and the female is the light gray one with spots. I thought these two were very comical :-)! This photo was taken in Cape Cod Massachusetts.

This was the dominant stag of the 2020 red deer rut, he wasn't that big but very strong and self confident, the sound of his bugling was just amazing...Forstenrieder Park, Munich, Germany
A dominant bull elk scans the edges of his harem for would-be interlopers who might attempt to lure away one or several of his cows. This guy spontaneously dropped to the ground and appeared to take a quick nap shortly after this, though perhaps it was also just a bit of cud chewing. Either way he was back up and herding his gals to safety after a couple of minutes. The vegetation that morning had been damp, and you can see the wet fur on his underside and neck.
