The University Cottage Club is one of eleven current eating clubs at Princeton University, in Princeton, New Jersey, United States. It is also one of the six bicker clubs, along with The Ivy Club, Tiger Inn, Cap and Gown Club, Cannon Club and Tower Club.

In 1884, a group of freshmen who called themselves "The Seven Wise Men of Grease" of the Class of 1888, chose to eat in a private room on the second floor of Dohm's Restaurant on Nassau Street across from the campus. In their sophomore year, the group moved up Nassau Street to a hotel on the corner of Railroad Avenue (now University Place) known as The University Hotel. In September of their junior year as they were joined by several other students, they found a small house immediately south of The University Hotel on Railroad Avenue (where Hamilton Hall now stands) owned by the college, known as "The University Cottage". A couple was hired to cook and serve their meals. Prior to their graduation in 1888, the group invited members from the sophomore class to join their new venue. In 1889, new members of this society adopted legal papers and agreed on the name "The University Cottage Club of Princeton."

In 1890, a lot on Prospect Avenue (upon which today's clubhouse stands) was purchased and a shingled Victorian clubhouse was built in 1892. The enrollment continued to grow and this structure was moved to Library Place when plans were made for a larger building. The current 2 1⁄2-story Georgian Revival clubhouse was designed by Charles Follen McKim of the New York architectural firm McKim, Mead and White in 1903 and built in 1906.

The library on the second floor is modeled on the fourteenth century library in Merton College, Oxford University. In the Dining Room, one such carving reads “Ubi Amici Ibidem Sunt Opes” (“Where there are friends there are riches”) which has become over the years a motto of the Club.

In 1979, Cottage Club was one of three all-male eating clubs sued by 1980 Princeton graduate Sally Frank for sex discrimination. Ms. Frank prevailed in 1985. Following the suit, the Club voted to admit women in early 1986. Cottage has historically been numbered among the "Big Four" eating clubs of Princeton University (the others are Ivy, Cap and Gown, and Tiger Inn).

Recent renovations have kept the club in first-class condition while preserving its historic beauty. Many young literary enthusiasts like to visit the library where F. Scott Fitzgerald began his novel This Side of Paradise.

On September 14, 1999, the Club was entered onto the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. On November 15, 1999, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places based on the architectural structure of the building, high degree of historic integrity, and significant cultural contributions to the community.

museumPASSmusees 2025 - Art et marges musee museum - Aussi loin qu'ici

The space of the Art et marges museum has never held such a vast exhibition. The artists from AUSSI LOIN QU'ICI are bringing together a show that conjures up journeys that are immobile, daily lives reinvented, windows filled with fantasies, perpetuated memories, recorded itineraries, movements set in lines, journeys set in waves, and landscapes placed inside boxes! Take the path overlooking the maps, tuck yourself away in a secluded space; you have never been so far as by simply staying here, where a movement is mapped out that makes the margin irresistibly central.

Curators: Alix Hubermont and Tatiana Veress

The first part of the exhibition features works by Yassir Amazine, Aime Bahati, Nour Ben Slimane, Giovanni Bosco, Anne Campbell, Samuel Cariaux, Matilde Carli, Georges Cauchy, Adam Cicherski, Philippe Closset, Sylvain Cosijns, Franky Derycke, Georges Dohm, Paul Duhem, Sebastian Ferreira, Marion Galisson, Michael Golz, Juanma Gonzalez, Martha Grunenwaldt, Laurence Halleux, Come Lequin, Maxime Mormont, Raphael Michel, Mark Anthony Mulligan, Michael Mvukani Mpiolani, Antoine Mvumbi, Helmut Nimczewski, Remi Pierlot, Andre Robillard, Arnaud Rogard, Jean-Pierre Rostenne, Marie Steins, Pascal Tassini, Donatien Toma Ndani Djemelas, Louis Van Baelens, Willem Van Genk, Gerard Van Lankveld, Nick Verhaeghe, Joseph Yoakum.

The Postcard

A postally unused carte postale published by A. Dohmen of Brussels.

Zeebrugge

Zeebrugge, meaning "Bruges on the Sea", is a town on the coast of Belgium.

Zeebrugge serves as both the international port of Bruges and as a seafront resort with hotels, cafés, a marina and a beach.

The Zeebrugge Raid

The harbour was the site of the Zeebrugge Raid on the 23rd. April 1918, when the British Royal Navy temporarily put the German inland naval base at Bruges out of action.

Admiral Roger Keyes planned and led the raid that stormed the German batteries and sank three old warships at the entrance to the canal leading to the inland port.

This action was a partial success as it blocked the access, but the Germans dug a new canal around the ships. The raid, although a morale boosting victory in Britain, was also claimed as a victory in Germany.

The Herald of Free Enterprise

25,370 days after the raid, on the 8th. October 1987, a Coroner's Inquest jury into the capsizing of the Herald of Free Enterprise off Zeebrugge Harbour returned a verdict of unlawful killing.

Over 190 people died on the 6th. March 1987 when the car ferry capsized.

Already low in the water because of full ballast tanks to allow for the low loading dock, the ship overturned because the bow doors had been left open after departure, and water flooded the car decks.

The deck hand responsible for shutting the bow doors was asleep at the time, and there is also a probability that the ship was overloaded.

After a public inquiry into the disaster, Lord Justice Sheen published a report in July 1987 which identified a "Disease of Sloppiness" and negligence at every level of the Townsend-Thoresen hierarchy.

The Crown Prosecution Service charged owners P&O European Ferries with corporate manslaughter in 1989, and 7 employees with manslaughter. The case collapsed, but it set a precedent for corporate manslaughter being legally admissible in an English court.

German stage and film actress Heli Finkenzeller (1914-1991) had her greatest successes in popular Ufa comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. After the war she often played mother roles.

Helene Finkenzeller was born in München (Munich), Germany in 1914 (according to some sources 1911). She grew up in Munich where her parents where her parents ran a family, business which sold office furniture. As a kid she was already interested in everything connected to the theatre and she wanted to become an opera singer. After finishing school she attended a conservatory, but she soon realized that her voice was too weak for the opera stage. Instead she took acting classes from Otto Falkenberg at his newly established drama school in Munich and in 1934 she joined the Münchner Kammerspielen (Munich Chamber Plays) and for the next two years she performed there with such actors as Ferdinand Marian, Elizabeth Flickenschild, and her later husband Will Dohm. In 1935 she made her first film appearance in a supporting part in the Ufa comedy Ehestreik/Matrimonial Strike (1935, Georg Jacoby) with Paul Richter. She played her first lead for the Ufa in the comedy Weiberregiment/Petticoat Government (1936, Karl Ritter). She appeared with star comedian Heinz Rühmann in Der Mustergatte/Model Husband (1937, Wolfgang Liebeneiner). The box office hits Opernball/Opera Ball (1939, Wolfgang Liebeneiner) with Paul Hörbiger, Kohlhiesels Töchter/Kohlhiesels daughters (1943, Kurt Hoffmann) in which she played the double roles of Veronika and Annamirl Kohlhöfer, and especially Das Bad auf der Tenne/The bathroom in the barn (1943, Volker von Collande) with her husband Will Dohm made her known to a large audience and became one of Germany’s most popular film stars.

After the Second World War Heli Finkenzeller continued her film career, often in mother roles. Thus she played the wife of Heinz Rühmann in Briefträger Müller/Postman Müller (1953, John Reinhardt) and Emil’s mother in Emil und die Detektive/Emil and the Detectives (1954, Robert A. Stemmle) based on the classic children’s book by Erich Kästner. In the German-Dutch coproduction Ciske - Ein Kind braucht Liebe/Ciske – A Child Needs Love (1955, Wolfgang Staudte) with Kees Brusse, she was the aunt of the title figure, and she was also seen in another Dutch-German coproduction Jenny (1959, Alfred Bittins, Willy van Hemert) also with Kees Brusse. On stage, she appeared in the musical Gigi at the Theater des Westens (Theater of the West) in Berlin, and in many plays. She also can be heard on records with songs and texts. From the early 1960’s on, the former Ufa star played mainly on stage and in many TV films and series, such as Unser Pauker/Our Crammer (1965, Otto Meyer) with Georg Thomalla, the comedy Meine Schwiegersöhne und ich/My sons-in-law and I (1969, Rudolf Jugert) opposite Hans Söhnker, the Krimi Der Kommissar/The Commissioner (1974) starring Erik Ode, Das Traumschiff/The Dream Boat (1981, Fritz Umgelter), Der Gerichtsvollzieher/The Bailiff (1981, Peter Weck) and finally, three years before her death still in Lorentz & Söhne/Lorentz and Sons (1988, Claus Peter Witt). In between, she played in one final film, the black comedy Satansbraten/Satan’s Brew (1976, Rainer Werner Fassbinder). Heli Finkenzeller was married with fellow actor Will Dohm, with whom she had a daughter, actress Gaby Dohm (1943) who is well known in the German language countries. After Will Dohm’s death in 1948, she remarried in 1950 to film producer Alfred Bittin. They stayed together till his death in 1971. Heli Finkenzeller died from cancer in 1991 in her hometown Munich. She was 76. In an obituary the German weekly Der Spiegel wrote: “Her type was much in demand at the Ufa: charm with distance, elegance without any wickedness. She even had big world allure, but on a small Pan-German scale. It made Heli Finkenzeller in the middle of the thirties a star in light entertainment films.”

Identification on the verso and in the Dohme family album.

Ewald Wettennscheidt was born in January 1842 in Elberfeld, Germany, the son of August Wettennscheidt (1910-1891) and Amelia Pelzer (born 1811). He came to the United States with his parents in 1855 and the family settled in Baltimore. In 1860, the family was living in Baltimore, where August was a jeweler and Ewald was an apprentice to his father. Ewald was married in December 1865 to Amelia S. Wagner (1845-1924), and the couple would have at least four children. In 1870, Ewald was working in his father’s shop, a business he would eventually take over. In 1880, Ewald was listed as the head of the household, and his parents were living with Ewald and his wife. Although a general purpose jeweler, Ewald specialized as a clockmaker; one service he provided was to go the homes of his customers to wind their clocks every two weeks. Ewald remained in Baltimore until his death on 22 March 1922.

The photographers were August Nolte and Albrecht Jahn, who were partners in NYC circa 1874-1876. Jahn was a painter, sketch artist, and teacher, and later worked in Philadelphia. August Nolte was born in Thuringia, Germany in January 1836. He was living in New York City in 1870 with his wife Theresa (born circa 1847) and was listed as an artist. He relocated to New Orleans sometime before 1880 and worked there as an artist until his death on 18 August 1914.
