Still trying to get the system stable. Maybe my last post for the week, but though I should get a few more up before I start tweaking.
Crystal Lake - Iowa
North Iowa will be experiencing some nasty hot and very humid conditions for the next several days. Temperature in the upper 90's, dew point in the 70's and little breeze until maybe Friday!
School doesn't start until Wednesday, but there were no kids swimming, no picnics or even boats on the lake!
Just me and the camera and lots of unwanted peace and quiet! LoL !

Even though the dog days of summer are technically over, that didn't stop this dog-day cicada from emerging today, especially since it really felt like the dog days of summer outside. One of the hallmarks of the summer dog days are the oppressive hot temperatures that often appear in early to mid-August. Today was probably the hottest day that I've ever experienced in Iowa as the heat index registered 119 F (48 C). Needless to say, I didn't spend too much time away from the air conditioner this afternoonš.
As the sun approaches the horizon at the end of a hot Sunday, July 30, 2023, northbound CPKC train G387 cruises past the community of Bunch, OK. Though officially an empty grain train, there was a large cut of boxcars near the head end.

After all the wild play, some calming down play. First chase and box and wild play. Then hang out together, side by side. I just love Mia's (border collie) expressive face, and Jake's (one yr. old standard poodele) cute gestures. He was so sweet with Mia. My 10 yr. old Lisette joined in a little, but at 10 she is not into the same rough and tumble play. In the original below, you can see her typical position as Jake and Mia were in the thick of the play. We are at a friend's house.
Oops-- I meant to keep this private and accidentally set it to public-- so fine to comment if you want. I just posted the photo without the hats yesterday, and added the hats with PIcnick today to include in some fun e-mails. So it's one from the very recent archives- with santa hats added. I did not mean for my contacts to have to comment twice on the same photo-- so just ignore it if you wish-- or look at it if you like.

It's cicada season again here in the Driftless Region. This cool cicada always times its emergence to coincide with the hot and sultry dog days of summer, that by the way end today according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

It's been feeling like low 30's C (~91F) in Ottawa for the second consecutive week...We're finally getting summer, and this dog on Bank and Slater Streets in Ottawa today at lunch time doesn't seem to mind!
The Dog Days is supposed to be the sultry part of the summer, which typically occurs during the period that Sirius, the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the sun. We are quite past that period now as it's often reckoned to be from July 3 to August 11. It can also mean a period marked by lethargy, or inactivity.

This scene I caught at Crissy Field in San Francisco puts me in mind of an old tapestry of a stag hunt with a hound in pursuit. Joe playing the stag with Rhett the hound giving chase.
October marks the start of the fall Dog Days in the Garden, where the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden allows dogs in on certain Saturday mornings. We love to take advantage of it. Its a great opportunity to sniff some new stuff and meet other dogs, and enjoy a little extra doggy/human time. Of course the dogs have to be on leash, but we took it off momentarily for the photo opp. Having lived all of his 13 years in the desert, Jasper is quite adept at avoiding getting stuck by cactus needles, so we can feel comfortable posing him near a barrel cactus like this one.
It was the end of July and we had to travel to Clinton Iowa and back that day. We decided to take a route that wound through the hills of east central Iowa. Enjoy the road scenes as we travel through Iowa's Grant Wood area.

I have always been very fond of this photograph. I like silhouetted structures, the peacefulness of dusk, the rolling waves in the foreground, the negative space of the beach on the right, and the afterglow of the bygone sunset. One boat is still absent. Perhaps the fishing was plentiful?
In the summer of 2001, as a present to myself, I purchased a Canon FD 200 mm bayonet mount lens. This roll of film was my first test roll shot with it. I still have the lens and regard it as one the best in my collection.

Apparently it was National Dog Day in the US yesterday. Diego is not happy with me for missing it, all those other dogs getting so much attention on line. Sorry buddy!
