“At the same time, I liked the idea that a coffee chain like Starbucks, would make it customary, that the clients had to say their names and they quasi-personalized each coffee cup by the baristas, who wrote the name of each customer on their coffee cup - often times they would misspell the names gruesomely, due to the stress given in a coffee chain, so that the intial idea of making the customer feel like an individual in a corporate world, actually became turned into the opposite - leaving the customer feel much more like a stranger, drinking from a coffee cup with a wrong name on it." A man rushing whilst running a video meeting on his computer, and tapping his phone. This image does not only show a man on a street, but a whole culture where prestige is put on multitasking as much as possible.
These photo's are the product of the Krakow Unseen documentary photography workshop I followed, hosted by WorkshopX in Krakow, Poland. For a couple of days I documented the life of Janusz, a colorful, interesting and very kind and humorous man who tries to enjoy life to its fullest. I'm extremely grateful he allowed me, and you, to be a part of his life for those days. All the best, my man!
Guaia Guaia concert at the film premiere of the documentary "Unplugged:Leben Guaia Guaia", Cinenova, Cologne.
Luis and Elias are street musicians (Guaia Guaia) and they tour through Germany and Europe. They don't have a secure place to live, insurance or bank account. With a lot of creativity and optimism they fight for a future far from a middle-class mindscape. Two backpacks, a converted dustbin with a petrol-powered amplifier, an electric guitar, a trombone and a laptop is all that Luis and Elias need to make music and explore the world. The road movie "Unplugged: Life Guaia Guaia" (director Sobo Swobodnik) documents their life as homeless people performing their street music.

Malcolm Ingram has directed a documentary about the gay bear subculture called, appropriately enough, BEAR NATION. He interviewed me for the film last year and apparently found some usable footage, as I am included in the film.
The film debuted in March at this year's South By Southwest Film Festival and is currently making the rounds of the festival circuit right now. If you're interested in checking out the film, you can see it in the following cities on the following dates:
Saturday, May 22 - Toronto - Inside Out Film Festival
Friday May 28 - Chicago - Bear Pride
Saturday, May 29 - Chicago - Charity Screening
Tuesday, June 1 - St. Louis
Tuesday, June 2 - Kansas City
Thursuday, June 10 - New York - New Fest 2010
More screenings are constantly being added, and the best place to find out about them is on the film's Facebook page, which is updated with details regularly. There's also a trailer, viewable on the official website.
After an alfresco meal in our back yard on a balmy summer night key steak holders gathered with a documentary film crew to map shooting and key issues. The crew, led by actor/director David Field with legendary Australian photographer, Stephen DuPont on camera and John Corker producing, met with land care groups, greening Australia, Indigenous elders and media. Next morning it was off to what presenter, Dr Reese Halter from California, describes as the great tree desert.

DUMP-MONSTER
The Bishkek sanitary landfill started operating 70 years ago and covers an area of more than 80 hectares. Its operational lifetime is already over, nevertheless it is still being used. Some of the people working in the dump have a home and a family but cannot find decently payed jobs. According to the last statistics, 512 people are working in the, and 20 of them are minors.
Fires are constantly fueled by the garbage, and the smoke as dangerous effects on the workers’ health. It has been reported that drunk workers fell asleep in the dumb and where victim of wild animals. Even if near the dump there is a housing project, some of the workers choose to leave in the dump without shelter to save more money.
Their work consists in sorting and collecting different materials (plastic, glass bottle, polyethylene among others) and sell them to the dealers on site. Sometimes they are paid in vodka rather than in cash and who tries to sell the material elsewhere is punished.
Many people spent their entire lives working here. Now the government is planning to open a new dump.
“This is an unexpected long term project. As I’m working on it I found things out that my parents kept away from me when I was younger. It somehow feels like I’m discovering my family’s secrets. I have been working on this project for 3 years now and it hasn’t come to an end yet. It is hard to narrow down all of the information and ideas I have, even though at first I just took pictures of the ice factory. However, as I spend time roaming around to take pictures things just reveal themselves to me. For instance, I have seen the police unexpectedly show up at the ice factory to collect money. I have witnessed a man impersonate a royal figure, arriving with 4 bodyguards with arms in 3 black luxury cars without license plates. Lastly, a few months after the Coup d'état, soldiers showed up with M-16s at my parents’ ice shop because the competitor was upset that my parents’ employees parked their cars near the competitor’s ice shop. These are, I believe, special events that have shaped my life.” Ice Harvest by Looksorn (2|4)
