Seen here in August 2019 is the side entrance at the south end of the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, on the north side of Court Street near the corner of Franklin Street in downtown Buffalo, New York. The door is recessed deeply and diagonally into a triangular niche tucked underneath a series of cantilevered overhangs, accessible from a pleasant street-level terrace via a short, low stairway and surrounded by rough-textured exterior surfaces of corrugated concrete. More even than the main entrance facing Pearl Street, the scene exemplifies the Brutalist architectural design furnished by the local firm of DiDonato Renaldo Associates. Part of a multipronged strategy of urban development and new investment aimed at reviving a then-increasingly stagnant downtown business district, the Convention Center opened its doors in 1978 after a decade and a half of brainstorming and planning. Proposals for its construction date back as far as 1962, when in the wake of the completion of Cobo Hall in Detroit, Buffalo's City Planning Board issued a report advocating for an analogous local facility to be placed on a 10-acre parcel at the foot of Main Street next to Memorial Auditorium (the present-day site of the HarborCenter and the replica canals at Canalside), an area of town for which city leaders were already hard at work envisioning a raft of waterfront development ideas. The proposal met with general approval, but - as would soon become a recurring trope in the saga of the Buffalo waterfront - officials spent the next several years essentially sitting on their hands, dithering over the scope of the project (which by the following year had expanded to include a possible new stadium for the Buffalo Bills football team, supposedly an urgent necessity in advance of the impending merger of the American and National Football Leagues) while funding outlays were repeatedly deferred by legislative gridlock in Albany and the Niagara Frontier Port Authority, already in the midst of a large-scale expansion of the Greater Buffalo International Airport, expressed reluctance to add another major project to their docket. The stalemate continued into the 1970s, when even as work was progressing rapidly on a spacious 116,000-square-foot, 10,000-capacity convention center in nearby Niagara Falls, about the only thing the Buffalo contingent had agreed on was that the football stadium was to be built in the suburbs (not enough available parking downtown, they said). Ironically, however, that seeming setback was arguably the factor most responsible for breaking the logjam: with stadium developers' attention diverted elsewhere, Edward L. Hengerer, Jr. - the local real estate magnate then serving as rental agent for the Statler Hilton Hotel, whose ballroom was the epicenter of downtown Buffalo's convention circuit in those interim days - saw a chance to push the dithering Port Authority out of the picture and advocate an alternate site for the new convention center that would be closer to, or even connected with, the existing facility. His proposal to level the block between Pearl and Franklin Streets north of the Walbridge Building rapidly gained traction among local leaders, who continued pursuing it even after Buffalo voters narrowly rejected a 1973 referendum that would have authorized the city to issue $3 million in bonds to fund the purchase of the land. Finally, in May 1975, the Erie County Legislature came to the rescue, approving $20 million in bonds that would finance the entirety of the project and be gradually repaid into the public coffers through an increase in the hotel bed tax. Despite the swelling chorus of naysayers warning of the convention center as a "white elephant" in the making, shovels were in the ground by late 1976 to kick off the two-year construction process. Sadly, though, those fears ultimately proved well-founded: not only did its operating costs persistently drain the public budget while providing far fewer benefits to the local economy than predicted, but paradoxically, it almost instantly proved too small to attract the top-flight conventions promised by its promoters. (Not helping matters was the fact that its main competitor, the aforementioned Niagara Falls Convention Center, boasted twice the floor space and a major tourist attraction right on its doorstep.) Over the next several decades, the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center would settle into a niche as host of a diverse if unremarkable panoply of job fairs, comic and fan conventions, and annual events such as the Buffalo Auto Show and the World's Largest Disco, but it would never shed its status has a perennial money loser despite multiple rounds of expansion and renovation (the most recent of which wrapped up in 2023, several years after this photo was taken, and saw the whole Pearl Street side of the building reclad in blue and white fiberglass panels). In fact, in recent years the conversation has increasingly turned to doubt over whether local government should be in the business of subsidizing event space at all.

Had a blast at Arizona Car Week 2026!
The leisurely, detailed construction of these sandwiches, whose
ingredients were largely sourced by a trip to the farmer's market,
indicates a level of having-act-togetherness that I rarely enjoy on
the weekends: all the anticipated checks arrived, I have no
assignments on my docket, the car repairs were easily managed and
resolved before this luncheon commenced. I also discovered my copy of
Our Noise: the story of Merge Records arrived awaiting my perusal
arrived and I have a Werner Herzog movie to watch. I am kicking ass on
the crptoquote iphone app I downloaded last night while taking Maya
and a friend to the new Harry Potter movie. There was leftover cobbler
from desert last night. A slight breeze is lending today's August
humidity a whisper of Spring. I hear the mail arriving as I type this.
Here's hoping there are no terminal punctation marks to this leisurely
run-on sentence of a day hiding therein.

A car loan after bankruptcy is available in a lot of situations because your bankruptcy has passed and you will need to be responsible again financially, for this new loan. Same with buying a house after bankruptcy because the lender and realtor will most likely want to know all the details of your bankruptcy, to complete the sale. After bankruptcy home loans are an important financial tool to help improve your quality of life. After bankruptcy home loans may also increase your satisfaction in your personal space or environment, at home. What about credit cards after bankruptcy because when used correctly, they can actually help you build higher credit scores, faster. Credit cards after bankruptcy are an invaluable tool to rebuild credit too. As your credit score rises your interest rate usually drops, which may make monthly payments less expensive if you carry a balance which is not recommended of course. Using a credit card after bankruptcy is smart if you do it right and pay off the balance every month and do not go back to bad habits that caused the bankruptcy in the first place. So if you are looking at going through bankruptcy, just remember that you will survive and there is life after bankruptcy. In fact, life after bankruptcy should be even better than life before bankruptcy if you focus on making changes in the right areas and staying away from the choices that got you there in the first place.
