For several years, Virginia Beach's Hilltop area had two Rite Aid locations across the street from each other; this was after their Eckerd acquisition, and I've often wondered why they kept Eckerd's old inline tenant store in Hilltop North in operation instead of consolidating it with the standalone drive-thru Rite Aid. So, as you'd imagine, I was surprised when that store shuttered in 2021 and the Hilltop North store reigned supreme, even getting the major remodel that two others in the city received at the same time. And for a 50-something year old pharmacy space, this location looks spectacular with its' overhaul! Checkouts are front-and-center when you enter the building, the pharmacy is in the back left corner, home and market departments are to the left, and wellness and beauty departments are to the right. Clearly this must be one of the region's most popular stores, but that doesn't seem to matter to corporate now that it was added to one of the recent store closure dockets. It really does feel like they're just picking these stores at random sometimes, because now two stores with the 2021 overhaul will be gone this year. Only the store on Princess Anne Road will keep chugging along, for now, and the Rite Aid on West Broad Street in Richmond also has the same package, so at least this look won't be completely scrubbed away.
