The first day of Navaratri opened with an energetic procession where the many aspects of the Divine Mother were taken out from the small temples and taken with the devotees to be brought to the tent where these auspicious nights would be celebrated.
Paramahamsa Vishwananda gave a beautiful speech about this aspect of Ma that we celebrate on the first day. Shailaputri Devi represents this determination on the spiritual path. Devi in this form reminds us to remain strong, sincere and above all focused on whichever aim we set in our lives, just as the eagle sets its eye on its prey kilometres away. No matter what the size of the prey, it fearlessly aims for it until it succeeds. He explained the beauty of being a devotee of the Lord is that, as a devotee, the attitude is driven from within and it is our choice which way we decide to look at life. Guruji concluded that these nine days are a journey in rediscovering something that we have forgotten: our true divinity, and the Divine Mother comes to remind us softly (or strictly) depending on our own individual needs.

I was ranting last night about using a point and shoot. This is a real picture that was taken with a point and shoot several years ago with no camera tricks or otherwise. I was there trying to do some stutue silhouettes and saw this reflection in the glass. What an awesome moment. I still have my little kodak but it'll kill fresh batteries after about ten pictures. This is in a cemetary on route 23 going towards Powell, OH.
The driver stopped me in a beatiful temple betwneen Denpasaar and Ubud, Probably the town was Celuk. I had to dress the Sarong to enter the temple.....was so hot :)

In an exhibition of new works to be shown at Vanderbilt Divinity School, Samuel L. Dunson, Jr. presents a unique visual commentary on the problems that have arisen in communities affected by anger and distrust. Dunson explains that Meet the Fergusons is the result of a creative engagement of the turmoil that has arisen in the past year since Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson MO. These new works, states Dunson, “are not the result of an attempt to be political or controversial.” Instead, the artist considers the issues with spiritual eyes—in Dunson’s case, as an African-American Christian man and artist. Dunson wants his art to contribute to the greater discourse on human relations. Says Dunson, “I feel that my work should spark conversations.” 9.17.15
