Mallard Duck (Disambiguation) (ˈmælɑːrd, ˈmælərd) or Wild Duck (Anas platyrhynchos)

 

The mallard (/ˈmælɑːrd, ˈmælərd/) or wild duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is a dabbling duck that breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Eurasia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa. This duck belongs to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae. The male birds (drakes) have a glossy green head and are grey on their wings and belly, while the females (hens or ducks) have mainly brown-speckled plumage. Both sexes have an area of white-bordered black or iridescent blue feathers called a speculum on their wings; males especially tend to have blue speculum feathers. The mallard is 50–65 cm (20–26 in) long, of which the body makes up around two-thirds the length. The wingspan is 81–98 cm (32–39 in) and the bill is 4.4 to 6.1 cm (1.7 to 2.4 in) long. It is often slightly heavier than most other dabbling ducks, weighing 0.7–1.6 kg (1.5–3.5 lb). Mallards live in wetlands, eat water plants and small animals, and are social animals preferring to congregate in groups or flocks of varying sizes. This species is the main ancestor of most breeds of domestic ducks.

 

The female lays eight to 13 creamy white to greenish-buff spotless eggs, on alternate days. Incubation takes 27 to 28 days and fledging takes 50 to 60 days. The ducklings are precocial and fully capable of swimming as soon as they hatch.

 

The mallard is considered to be a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Unlike many waterfowl, mallards are considered an invasive species in some regions. It is a very adaptable species, being able to live and even thrive in urban areas which may have supported more localised, sensitive species of waterfowl before development. The non-migratory mallard interbreeds with indigenous wild ducks of closely related species through genetic pollution by producing fertile offspring. Complete hybridisation of various species of wild duck gene pools could result in the extinction of many indigenous waterfowl. The wild mallard is the ancestor of most domestic ducks, and its naturally evolved wild gene pool gets genetically polluted by the domestic and feral mallard populations.

  

Taxonomy and evolutionary history

 

The mallard was one of the many bird species originally described in the 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae by Carl Linnaeus. He gave it two binomial names: Anas platyrhynchos and Anas boschas. The latter was generally preferred until 1906 when Einar Lönnberg established that A. platyrhynchos had priority, as it appeared on an earlier page in the text. The scientific name comes from Latin Anas, "duck" and Ancient Greek πλατυρυγχος, platyrhynchus, "broad-billed" (from πλατύς, platys, "broad" and ρυγχός, rhunkhos, "bill"). The genome of Anas platyrhynchos was sequenced in 2013.

 

The name mallard originally referred to any wild drake, and it is sometimes still used this way. It was derived from the Old French malart or mallart for "wild drake" although its true derivation is unclear. It may be related to, or at least influenced by, an Old High German masculine proper name Madelhart, clues lying in the alternative English forms "maudelard" and "mawdelard". Masle (male) has also been proposed as an influence.

 

Mallards frequently interbreed with their closest relatives in the genus Anas, such as the American black duck, and also with species more distantly related, such as the northern pintail, leading to various hybrids that may be fully fertile. This is quite unusual among such different species, and is apparently because the mallard evolved very rapidly and recently, during the Late Pleistocene. The distinct lineages of this radiation are usually kept separate due to non-overlapping ranges and behavioural cues, but have not yet reached the point where they are fully genetically incompatible. Mallards and their domestic conspecifics are also fully interfertile.

 

Genetic analysis has shown that certain mallards appear to be closer to their Indo-Pacific relatives, while others are related to their American relatives. Mitochondrial DNA data for the D-loop sequence suggest that mallards may have evolved in the general area of Siberia. Mallard bones rather abruptly appear in food remains of ancient humans and other deposits of fossil bones in Europe, without a good candidate for a local predecessor species. The large Ice Age palaeosubspecies that made up at least the European and West Asian populations during the Pleistocene has been named Anas platyrhynchos palaeoboschas.

 

Mallards are differentiated in their mitochondrial DNA between North American and Eurasian populations, but the nuclear genome displays a notable lack of genetic structure. Haplotypes typical of American mallard relatives and eastern spot-billed ducks can be found in mallards around the Bering Sea. The Aleutian Islands hold a population of mallards that appear to be evolving towards becoming a subspecies, as gene flow with other populations is very limited.

 

Also, the paucity of morphological differences between the Old World mallards and the New World mallard demonstrates the extent to which the genome is shared among them such that birds like the Chinese spot-billed duck are highly similar to the Old World mallard, and birds such as the Hawaiian duck are highly similar to the New World mallard.

 

The size of the mallard varies clinally; for example, birds from Greenland, though larger, have smaller bills, paler plumage, and stockier bodies than birds further south and are sometimes classified as a separate subspecies, the Greenland mallard (A. p. conboschas).

  

Description

 

The mallard is a medium-sized waterfowl species that is often slightly heavier than most other dabbling ducks. It is 50–65 cm (20–26 in) long – of which the body makes up around two-thirds – has a wingspan of 81–98 cm (32–39 in) and weighs 0.7–1.6 kg (1.5–3.5 lb). Among standard measurements, the wing chord is 25.7 to 30.6 cm (10.1 to 12.0 in), the bill is 4.4 to 6.1 cm (1.7 to 2.4 in), and the tarsus is 4.1 to 4.8 cm (1.6 to 1.9 in).

 

The breeding male mallard is unmistakable, with a glossy bottle-green head and a white collar that demarcates the head from the purple-tinged brown breast, grey-brown wings, and a pale grey belly. The rear of the male is black, with white-bordered dark tail feathers. The bill of the male is a yellowish-orange tipped with black, with that of the female generally darker and ranging from black to mottled orange and brown. The female mallard is predominantly mottled, with each individual feather showing sharp contrast from buff to very dark brown, a coloration shared by most female dabbling ducks, and has buff cheeks, eyebrow, throat, and neck, with a darker crown and eye-stripe.

 

Both male and female mallards have distinct iridescent purple-blue speculum feathers edged with white, which are prominent in flight or at rest but temporarily shed during the annual summer moult. Upon hatching, the plumage of the duckling is yellow on the underside and face (with streaks by the eyes) and black on the back (with some yellow spots) all the way to the top and back of the head. Its legs and bill are also black. As it nears a month in age, the duckling's plumage starts becoming drab, looking more like the female, though more streaked, and its legs lose their dark grey colouring. Two months after hatching, the fledgling period has ended, and the duckling is now a juvenile. Between three and four months of age, the juvenile can finally begin flying, as its wings are fully developed for flight (which can be confirmed by the sight of purple speculum feathers). Its bill soon loses its dark grey colouring, and its sex can finally be distinguished visually by three factors:

1) the bill is yellow in males, but black and orange in females;

2) the breast feathers are reddish-brown in males, but brown in females; and

3) in males, the centre tail feather (drake feather) is curled, but in females, the centre tail feather is straight.

 

During the final period of maturity leading up to adulthood (6–10 months of age), the plumage of female juveniles remains the same while the plumage of male juveniles gradually changes to its characteristic colours. This change in plumage also applies to adult mallard males when they transition in and out of their non-breeding eclipse plumage at the beginning and the end of the summer moulting period. The adulthood age for mallards is fourteen months, and the average life expectancy is three years, but they can live to twenty.

 

Several species of duck have brown-plumaged females that can be confused with the female mallard. The female gadwall (Mareca strepera) has an orange-lined bill, white belly, black and white speculum that is seen as a white square on the wings in flight, and is a smaller bird. More similar to the female mallard in North America are the American black duck (A. rubripes), which is notably darker-hued in both sexes than the mallard, and the mottled duck (A. fulvigula), which is somewhat darker than the female mallard, and with slightly different bare-part colouration and no white edge on the speculum.

 

In captivity, domestic ducks come in wild-type plumages, white, and other colours. Most of these colour variants are also known in domestic mallards not bred as livestock, but kept as pets, aviary birds, etc., where they are rare but increasing in availability.

 

A noisy species, the female has the deep quack stereotypically associated with ducks. Male mallards make a sound phonetically similar to that of the female, a typical quack, but it is deeper and quieter compared to that of the female. When incubating a nest, or when offspring are present, females vocalise differently, making a call that sounds like a truncated version of the usual quack. This maternal vocalisation is highly attractive to their young. The repetition and frequency modulation of these quacks form the auditory basis for species identification in offspring, a process known as acoustic conspecific identification. In addition, females hiss if the nest or offspring are threatened or interfered with. When taking off, the wings of a mallard produce a characteristic faint whistling noise.

 

The mallard is a rare example of both Allen's Rule and Bergmann's Rule in birds. Bergmann's Rule, which states that polar forms tend to be larger than related ones from warmer climates, has numerous examples in birds, as in case of the Greenland mallard which is larger than the mallards further south. Allen's Rule says that appendages like ears tend to be smaller in polar forms to minimise heat loss, and larger in tropical and desert equivalents to facilitate heat diffusion, and that the polar taxa are stockier overall. Examples of this rule in birds are rare as they lack external ears, but the bill of ducks is supplied with a few blood vessels to prevent heat loss, and, as in the Greenland mallard, the bill is smaller than that of birds farther south, illustrating the rule.

 

Due to the variability of the mallard's genetic code, which gives it its vast interbreeding capability, mutations in the genes that decide plumage colour are very common and have resulted in a wide variety of hybrids, such as Brewer's duck (mallard × gadwall, Mareca strepera).

  

Distribution and habitat

 

The mallard is widely distributed across the Northern and Southern Hemispheres; in North America its range extends from southern and central Alaska to Mexico, the Hawaiian Islands, across the Palearctic, from Iceland and southern Greenland and parts of Morocco (North Africa) in the west, Scandinavia and Britain to the north, and to Siberia Japan and South Korea. Also in the east, it ranges to south-eastern and south-western Australia and New Zealand in the Southern hemisphere. It is strongly migratory in the northern parts of its breeding range, and winters farther south. For example, in North America, it winters south to the southern United States and northern Mexico, but also regularly strays into Central America and the Caribbean between September and May. A drake later named "Trevor" attracted media attention in 2018 when it turned up on the island of Niue, an atypical location for mallards.

 

The mallard inhabits a wide range of habitats and climates, from the Arctic tundra to subtropical regions. It is found in both fresh- and salt-water wetlands, including parks, small ponds, rivers, lakes and estuaries, as well as shallow inlets and open sea within sight of the coastline. Water depths of less than 0.9 metres (3.0 ft) are preferred, with birds avoiding areas more than a few metres deep They are attracted to bodies of water with aquatic vegetation.

  

Behaviour

 

Feeding

The mallard is omnivorous and very flexible in its choice of food. Its diet may vary based on several factors, including the stage of the breeding cycle, short-term variations in available food, nutrient availability, and interspecific and intraspecific competition The majority of the mallard's diet seems to be made up of gastropods, insects (including beetles, flies, lepidopterans, dragonflies, and caddisflies), crustaceans, worms, many varieties of seeds and plant matter, and roots and tubers. During the breeding season, male birds were recorded to have eaten 37.6% animal matter and 62.4% plant matter, most notably the grass Echinochloa crus-galli, and nonlaying females ate 37.0% animal matter and 63.0% plant matter, while laying females ate 71.9% animal matter and only 28.1% plant matter. Plants generally make up the larger part of a bird's diet, especially during autumn migration and in the winter.

 

The mallard usually feeds by dabbling for plant food or grazing; there are reports of it eating frogs. However, in 2017 a flock of mallards in Romania were observed hunting small migratory birds, including grey wagtails and black redstarts, the first documented occasion they had been seen attacking and consuming large vertebrates. It usually nests on a river bank, but not always near water. It is highly gregarious outside of the breeding season and forms large flocks, which are known as "sordes."

 

Breeding

 

Mallards usually form pairs (in October and November in the Northern Hemisphere) until the female lays eggs at the start of the nesting season, which is around the beginning of spring. At this time she is left by the male who joins up with other males to await the moulting period, which begins in June (in the Northern Hemisphere). During the brief time before this, however, the males are still sexually potent and some of them either remain on standby to sire replacement clutches (for female mallards that have lost or abandoned their previous clutch) or forcibly mate with females that appear to be isolated or unattached regardless of their species and whether or not they have a brood of ducklings.

 

Nesting sites are typically on the ground, hidden in vegetation where the female's speckled plumage serves as effective camouflage, but female mallards have also been known to nest in hollows in trees, boathouses, roof gardens and on balconies, sometimes resulting in hatched offspring having difficulty following their parent to water.

 

Egg clutches number 8–13 creamy white to greenish-buff eggs free of speckles. They measure about 58 mm (2.3 in) in length and 32 mm (1.3 in) in width. The eggs are laid on alternate days, and incubation begins when the clutch is almost complete. Incubation takes 27–28 days and fledging takes 50–60 days. The ducklings are precocial and fully capable of swimming as soon as they hatch.[citation needed] However, filial imprinting compels them to instinctively stay near the mother, not only for warmth and protection but also to learn about and remember their habitat as well as how and where to forage for food. When ducklings mature into flight-capable juveniles, they learn about and remember their traditional migratory routes (unless they are born and raised in captivity).In New Zealand, where mallards are naturalised, the nesting season has been found to be longer, eggs and clutches are larger and nest survival is generally greater compared with mallards in their native range.

 

In cases where a nest or brood fails, some mallards may mate for a second time in an attempt to raise a second clutch, typically around early-to-mid summer. In addition, mallards may occasionally breed during the autumn in cases of unseasonably warm weather; one such instance of a ‘late’ clutch occurred in November 2011, in which a female successfully hatched and raised a clutch of eleven ducklings at the London Wetland Centre.

 

During the breeding season, both male and female mallards can become aggressive, driving off competitors to themselves or their mate by charging at them.[86] Males tend to fight more than females, and attack each other by repeatedly pecking at their rival's chest, ripping out feathers and even skin on rare occasions. Female mallards are also known to carry out 'inciting displays', which encourages other ducks in the flock to begin fighting. It is possible that this behaviour allows the female to evaluate the strength of potential partners.

 

The drakes that end up being left out after the others have paired off with mating partners sometimes target an isolated female duck, even one of a different species, and proceed to chase and peck at her until she weakens, at which point the males take turns copulating with the female. Lebret (1961) calls this behaviour "Attempted Rape Flight", and Stanley Cramp and K.E.L. Simmons (1977) speak of "rape-intent flights". Male mallards also occasionally chase other male ducks of a different species, and even each other, in the same way. In one documented case of "homosexual necrophilia", a male mallard copulated with another male he was chasing after the chased male died upon flying into a glass window.[89] This paper was awarded an Ig Nobel Prize in 2003.

 

Mallards are opportunistically targeted by brood parasites, occasionally having eggs laid in their nests by redheads, ruddy ducks, lesser scaup, gadwalls, northern shovellers, northern pintails, cinnamon teal, common goldeneyes, and other mallards. These eggs are generally accepted when they resemble the eggs of the host mallard, but the hen may attempt to eject them or even abandon the nest if parasitism occurs during egg laying.

  

Predators and threats

 

In addition to human hunting, Mallards of all ages (but especially young ones) and in all locations must contend with a wide diversity of predators including raptors, mustelids, corvids, snakes, raccoons, opossums, skunks, turtles, large fish, felids, and canids, the last two including domestic ones. The most prolific natural predators of adult mallards are red foxes (which most often pick off brooding females) and the faster or larger birds of prey, e.g. peregrine falcons, Aquila eagles, or Haliaeetus eagles. In North America, adult mallards face no fewer than 15 species of birds of prey, from northern harriers (Circus hudsonius) and short-eared owls (Asio flammeus) (both smaller than a mallard) to huge bald, (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), and about a dozen species of mammalian predator, not counting several more avian and mammalian predators who threaten eggs and nestlings.

 

Mallards are also preyed upon by other waterside apex predators, such as the grey heron (Ardea cinerea), the European herring gull (Larus argentatus), the wels catfish (Silurus glanis), and the northern pike (Esox lucius). Crows (Corvus spp.) are also known to kill ducklings and adults on occasion. Also, mallards may be attacked by larger Anseriformes such as swans (Cygnus spp.) and geese during the breeding season, and are frequently driven off by these birds over territorial disputes. Mute swans (Cygnus olor) have been known to attack or even kill mallards if they feel that the ducks pose a threat to their offspring.

 

The predation-avoidance behaviour of sleeping with one eye open, allowing one brain hemisphere to remain aware while the other half sleeps, was first demonstrated in mallards, although it is believed to be widespread among birds in general.

  

Status and conservation

 

Since 1998, the mallard has been rated as a species of least concern on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species. This is because it has a large range–more than 20,000,000 km2 (7,700,000 mi2)–and because its population is increasing, rather than declining by 30% over ten years or three generations and thus is not warranted a vulnerable rating. Also, the population size of the mallard is very large.

 

Unlike many waterfowl, mallards have benefited from human alterations to the world – so much so that they are now considered an invasive species in some regions. They are a common sight in urban parks, lakes, ponds, and other human-made water features in the regions they inhabit, and are often tolerated or encouraged in human habitat due to their placid nature towards humans and their beautiful and iridescent colours. While most are not domesticated, mallards are so successful at coexisting in human regions that the main conservation risk they pose comes from the loss of genetic diversity among a region's traditional ducks once humans and mallards colonise an area. Mallards are very adaptable, being able to live and even thrive in urban areas which may have supported more localised, sensitive species of waterfowl before development. The release of feral mallards in areas where they are not native sometimes creates problems through interbreeding with indigenous waterfowl. These non-migratory mallards interbreed with indigenous wild ducks from local populations of closely related species through genetic pollution by producing fertile offspring. Complete hybridisation of various species of wild duck gene pools could result in the extinction of many indigenous waterfowl. Over time, a continuum of hybrids ranging between almost typical examples of either species develop; the speciation process is beginning to reverse itself. This has created conservation concerns for relatives of the mallard, such as the Hawaiian duck, the New Zealand grey duck (A. s. superciliosa) subspecies of the Pacific black duck, the American black duck, the mottled duck, Meller's duck, the yellow-billed duck, and the Mexican duck, in the latter case even leading to a dispute as to whether these birds should be considered a species (and thus entitled to more conservation research and funding) or included in the mallard species. Ecological changes and hunting have also led to a decline of local species; for example, the New Zealand grey duck population declined drastically due to overhunting in the mid-20th century. Hybrid offspring of Hawaiian ducks seem to be less well adapted to native habitat, and using them in re-introduction projects apparently reduces success. In summary, the problems of mallards "hybridising away" relatives is more a consequence of local ducks declining than of mallards spreading; allopatric speciation and isolating behaviour have produced today's diversity of mallard-like ducks despite the fact that, in most, if not all, of these populations, hybridisation must have occurred to some extent.

  

Invasiveness

 

Mallards are causing severe "genetic pollution" to South Africa's biodiversity by breeding with endemic ducks even though the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds – an agreement to protect the local waterfowl populations – applies to the mallard as well as other ducks. The hybrids of mallards and the yellow-billed duck are fertile, capable of producing hybrid offspring. If this continues, only hybrids occur and in the long term result in the extinction of various indigenous waterfowl. The mallard can crossbreed with 63 other species, posing a severe threat to indigenous waterfowl's genetic integrity. Mallards and their hybrids compete with indigenous birds for resources, including nest sites, roosting sites, and food.

 

Availability of mallards, mallard ducklings, and fertilised mallard eggs for public sale and private ownership, either as poultry or as pets, is currently legal in the United States, except for the state of Florida, which has currently banned domestic ownership of mallards. This is to prevent hybridisation with the native mottled duck.

 

The mallard is considered an invasive species in New Zealand, where it competes with the local New Zealand grey duck, which was overhunted in the past. There, and elsewhere, mallards are spreading with increasing urbanisation and hybridising with local relatives.

 

The eastern or Chinese spot-billed duck is currently introgressing into the mallard populations of the Primorsky Krai, possibly due to habitat changes from global warming. The Mariana mallard was a resident allopatric population – in most respects a good species – apparently initially derived from mallard-Pacific black duck hybrids; unfortunately, it became extinct in the late 20th century.

 

The Laysan duck is an insular relative of the mallard, with a very small and fluctuating population. Mallards sometimes arrive on its island home during migration, and can be expected to occasionally have remained and hybridised with Laysan ducks as long as these species have existed. However, these hybrids are less well adapted to the peculiar ecological conditions of Laysan Island than the local ducks, and thus have lower fitness. Laysan ducks were found throughout the Hawaiian archipelago before 400 CE, after which they suffered a rapid decline during the Polynesian colonisation. Now, their range includes only Laysan Island. It is one of the successfully translocated birds, after having become nearly extinct in the early 20th century.

  

Relationship with humans

 

Domestication

 

Mallards have often been ubiquitous in their regions among the ponds, rivers, and streams of human parks, farms, and other human-made waterways – even to the point of visiting water features in human courtyards.

 

Mallards have had a long relationship with humans. Almost all domestic duck breeds derive from the mallard, with the exception of a few Muscovy breeds, and are listed under the trinomial name A. p. domesticus. Mallards are generally monogamous while domestic ducks are mostly polygamous. Domestic ducks have no territorial behaviour and are less aggressive than mallards. Domestic ducks are mostly kept for meat; their eggs are also eaten, and have a strong flavour. They were first domesticated in Southeast Asia at least 4,000 years ago, during the Neolithic Age, and were also farmed by the Romans in Europe, and the Malays in Asia. As the domestic duck and the mallard are the same species as each other, It is common for mallards to mate with domestic ducks and produce hybrid offspring that are fully fertile. Because of this, mallards have been found to be contaminated with the genes of the domestic duck.

 

While the keeping of domestic breeds is more popular, pure-bred mallards are sometimes kept for eggs and meat, although they may require wing clipping to restrict flying, or training to navigate and fly home.

 

Hunting

 

Mallards are one of the most common varieties of ducks hunted as a sport due to the large population size. The ideal location for hunting mallards is considered to be where the water level is somewhat shallow where the birds can be found foraging for food. Hunting mallards might cause the population to decline in some places, at some times, and with some populations. In certain countries, the mallard may be legally shot but is protected under national acts and policies. For example, in the United Kingdom, the mallard is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which restricts certain hunting methods or taking or killing mallards.

 

As food

 

Since ancient times, the mallard has been eaten as food. The wild mallard was eaten in Neolithic Greece. Usually, only the breast and thigh meat is eaten. It does not need to be hung before preparation, and is often braised or roasted, sometimes flavoured with bitter orange or with port.

The B-series pickup trucks were sold from 1948 to 1953. They replaced the prewar Dodge truck and were replaced by the Dodge C series in 1954. The B-series trucks came in several different variants. The B1-B were ½-ton trucks standard with a 95 hp flathead-straight-six engine while the B1-C were ¾-ton trucks with a standard 108 hp flathead-straight 6 engine. It also came in several other variants such as the B1-T and B1-V which were semi-truck cabs and vans, respectively.

 

The B-series trucks featured a high-visibility "pilot-house" cab with optional rear quarter windows. The engine was shifted forward and the front axle moved back on the frame for better weight distribution as well as a shorter wheelbase, moving from 116 in to 108 in on ½-ton models.

 

The cargo bed sides were made higher to increase capacity by 40%. The redesigned cab could seat three people, with 2.5 in more height, 6 in more width and 3 in additional in length. The cab was mounted on rubber mounts for an improved ride.

 

Another innovation for the time was the use of cross-steering arrangement, giving the trucks a 37° turning radius. The cargo box space was increased over previous models and overload springs made optional on all variants to increase hauling capacity.

 

In 1950, more new features were added as the 3-speed manual shift lever was relocated to the steering column instead of on the floor. A fluid drive standard transmission, with 3 or 4 speeds, became an available option. The front end and dashboard/gauge layout were redesigned for 1951.

 

1953 was the last year of the "pilot-house" trucks, but brought many new changes. The Truck-O-Matic transmission, a fully automatic transmission was available for ½ and ¾-ton models. The Art Gallery of Knoxville

January 1-27, 2007

 

"Distribution Religion" was developed in 1973 by Chicago artists Dan Sandin and Phil Morton as a text to describe the schematic plans for Sandin's Image Processor, an analog computer optimized for video processing. The "Distribution Religion" expressed a determined belief in the idea of free and open copying, which is a central aspect of the Chicago School and a notion that has begun to become important to many contemporary artists.

 

From January 1 – 27, The Art Gallery of Knoxville will examine situations of sharing and exchange provided by three contemporary Chicago groups: criticalartware, People Powered , and Temporary Services. Each of these artists have developed interests in distribution and it's role as an important social / cultural concern.

 

criticalartware is a contemporary group led by artists jonCates, jon.satrom and bensyverson. A central part of their work involves the public distribution / presentation of interviews, video and text featuring the key players of early code or concept based Art. They are particularly interested in enabling "shared cultural resources connecting these conversations." In Knoxville, criticalartware will coordinate an electronic system for the sharing and exchange of this information – primarily through a custom computer interface.

 

People Powered is a Chicago group run by artist Kevin Kaempf. His work integrates itself socially, becoming a means for the distribution of physical tools. People Powered "adopts consumer culture's aesthetic forms to distribute information about sustainable living practices such as community composting, recycling, and free public transportation." A recent People Powered exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art highlighted prototypes for "Chicago Blue Bikes," in which junked bicycles are salvaged and rebuilt into a fleet of public bicycles. The Knoxville exhibition will become part of the project "Loop Limited: Recycled Paints" where unfinished cans of used paint are recycled/mixed together and redistributed into the community. Cans of paint will be available for free in the Gallery space.

 

The artists of Temporary Services are founders of the Chicago space "Mess Hall" and widely known for their public and social works. Often the group aims to "provide a network for the collection and distribution of artistic work going on looking at the line between art and ethics, power and art, and the role of the public." In Knoxville, the group's Booklets, a large collection of self published material on a wide range of subjects, will be freely available. Alongside this substantial library, an example set of works given away at the Temporary Services event "Free For All" will be shown. "Free For All" was a public art project where multiples of many small objects were collected by the public within a cardboard box that acted as a portable, distributed exhibition.

 

Temporary Services: Free For All by Marc Fischer "Over 10,000 objects were given away! Over 50 artists, individuals and organizations contributed work that was distributed for free at this one-day-only event. Artists' work was integrated with a wide range of material submerging the work in a broader context than it normally enjoys. Religious tracts, booklets, flyers, stickers, matchbooks, posters, audio tapes, and postcards were among the items given away. … 100 boxes (like the one pictured above) were provided for free. Visitors were invited to take anything they wanted making their own portable exhibitions to take with them."

 

"Free For All" is a self-replicating exhibit, one which is shared and exchanged in both the collecting and the viewing of it. Through "make-shift methods of distribution and display that are commonly found in flea markets, garage sales and craft shows" Temporary Services created an alternative, distributed exhibition that enabled a public to engage with cultural information on a level of personal ownership. The exhibition dealt not only with the free use of Art – but the creation of free and open systems as Art.

I have studiedd the history of electrification, as I find it very interesting.

 

After Edison's DC system proved to not be practical, and once the plan for electrifying the country was worked out by engineers (probably working at General Electric and Westinghouse), it was decided the distribution voltage was to be standardized at 2400 or 4800 volts, phase to phase, although there were many early grids operating at oddball voltages in the early days. It was to be a three phase 3-wire (delta) system, with the transformers connected phase to phase. A single phase distribution line was simply any two wires taped from the three phase system.

 

Previously, Edison had electrified parts of New York City with his DC system, and William Stanley, Jr., the inventor of the practical transformer had electrified (for lighting only) Great Barrington, MA, in 1886. Using transformers that he designed and built, he stepped up the generator's output of 500 volts to a distribution voltage of 3000 volts, with his transformers at the point of use stepping this voltage down to 100 volts.

Part of the problem of adopting AC was that early on there was no practical AC electric motor. DC motors were much simpler and until an AC motor was developed AC would not be accepted. And Edison's system in NYC provided power for both lighting and motors. In fact, ConEd continued to supply DC power to older buildings that had DC motors -- mostly for elevators -- until recently. After the ConEd DC generators were gone, they still used rotary converters, and later rectifiers, to provide DC power to some customers who needed it up to just a few years ago.

 

But by the late 1890's AC electric motors became available and household electrification using AC in the US with distribution systems operating at 2400 volts (delta connected primaries) began around 1905 in urban areas.

 

Actually, back at that time, the voltage was 2200 volts, which resulted in service to the customer side of the transformer of 110/220 volts in the United States. Over the years, this has been gradually increased, and is now a nominal 120/240 volts for residential and small commercial/industrial customers. For all voltages in this article, I use the modern voltage. In the original system, using these voltages allowed for a very convenient ratio of 10:1 (20:1 for 4800 volt transformers) for the windings of the transformers.

 

Most early three phase distribution systems were connected in delta on the primaries of the distribution transformers. This is where the three windings are connected together with three connections, and if you draw a schematic it looks like the Greek letter "delta". Later, as systems were upgraded, many if not most systems were connected so that a schematic looks like the Roman letter "Y", with the common point of the three windings usually grounded. This is usually spelled out as "wye".

 

Also it is helpful to understand the mathematical relationship between transformers connected delta or wye. In a wye connected three phase AC system, due to the 120 degree difference in phase between phases, the phase to phase voltage is 1.73 times the phase to neutral voltage, and the phase to neutral voltage is the phase to phase voltage divided by 1.73. 1.73 is the square root of three. It requires a bit of trigonometry to figure out why the factor is 1.73.

 

At any rate, 2400 volts was high enough to be able to use small size conductors on the distribution lines, and originally, electrification was just in the urban areas of cities and towns where the primary distribution lines were not that long, and loads were just lighting and very few appliances.

 

Later, as loads increased, most of these systems were upgraded to 4160 volts phase to phase (wye connected primaries), which made the phase to neutral voltage 2400 volts. A 4th wire was added, the neutral, and the 2400 volt transformers were reconnected phase to neutral. Almost all 2400 volt delta systems have been upgraded to 2400/4160Y (a few remain 2400 volt delta), and many old sections of urban areas that were originally electrified still use systems operating at these voltages. This is where you will see a lot of really old transformers, some dating back to the early days, and some really old ones with cast iron tanks.

 

Interestingly, while the distribution voltage in Manhattan is 100% 7960/13,800Y, many areas of Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Westchester County, etc., still use 2400/4160Y according to Con Ed's web site.

 

But as electrification spread into the suburbs and rural areas, distribution voltages became necessarily higher. These increases in voltage allowed the currents on the distribution lines to remain low enough that small conductors could be used on the distribution lines and losses were not too high as the amount of power required increased.

 

Here is the upgrade path that was taken, as upgrades were required, from the original 2400 volt delta wired system:

 

Original system -- 2400 volt delta only using 2400 volt transformers connected phase to phase

 

Upgraded to 2400/4160Y using old 2400 volt transformers connected phase to neutral and new 4160 transformers connected phase to phase -- a lot of urban areas still operate at this voltage, including areas around NYC as mentioned above.

 

[Correction: 4160 volt transformers were never used, as pointed out in the comments below by NDLineGeek. Rather, all transformers on this system are 2400 volt connected phase to neutral.]

 

In some urban/suburban/moderately populated close-in rural areas that were electrified (for the first time--not upgraded) a bit later, say beginning in the 1910's, other voltages were sometimes chosen, because they did not have existing transformers to re-deploy.

 

A very common original distribution voltage for systems serving these types of areas was 4800 volts delta. This voltage was chosen for its own merits, not to allow for older transformers to continue to be used. Since these systems were built some years after the original 2,400 volt delta systems, the technology to use higher voltages had evolved, and this was a better choice for systems that covered towns that were a bit more spread out, or had more thickly populated near-by rural areas.

 

Areas like this were electrified much sooner than the spread-out rural areas of the mid-west, south, and far west. And since this was all original build, there were no old transformers to have to re-use. Originally, the 4800 volt systems were delta, and the transformers were connected phase to phase. The upgrade path for these systems was to upgrade to 4-wire wye, and the phase to phase voltage was 1.73 times 4800, or about 8320, which allowed the old 4800 volt transformers on these systems to be connected phase to neutral when they were upgraded. Indeed, most of these systems have been upgraded to 4800/8320Y, but I have read that a few remain operating at 4800 volts delta, including quite a few systems in CT that remain 4800 volt delta systems. Other areas of Connecticut operate with 4800/8320Y, with most transformers connected phase to neutral at 4800 volts. In these areas you will see some very old Westinghouse transformers, most of which are from the 10's, 20's, and 30's. Some have cast iron tanks; these are the oldest transformers still in use. This voltage works well in places like Connecticut because the towns, and their surrounding close-in rural areas, are not spread out too much for this voltage.

 

Another voltage used for first-time build for truly rural electrification was 7200 volts, wired delta, using 7200 volt transformers connected phase to phase. In the early days, this voltage was 6600 volts, which was stepped down to 110/220 with transformers that used a winding ratio of 30:1. Today, these same 30:1 transformers deliver 120/240 volts with 7200 volts on their primaries. These systems were originally built at this voltage beginning in the mid 1930's in delta configuration as a result of Roosevelt's enactment of the Rural Electrification Administration in 1935. Since these were all new systems there was no concern for using old transformers, but 6600 (now 7200) volts was chosen.

 

Over time, most of these systems have been upgraded to 7200/12470Y which has allowed for the continued use of 7200 volt transformers, but allowed for a less expensive transformer to be built once the systems were upgraded. The original 7200 volt transformers for the delta system had to have two high voltage connections going into the primary of the transformer, whereas the wye connection only required one high voltage bushing, as the other connection is to the neutral, which is grounded. On these systems, you will see a mixture of transformers, some with two HV bushings, and some with just one bushing. Most of these systems continue to operate at 7200/12470Y, and is a very common standard.

 

Note that for some of the upgrades, the original phase to phase voltage was multiplied by 1.73 so the phase to neutral voltage for the upgrade remained the same as the original phase to phase voltage.

 

Besides the standards discussed above, some other distribution voltages you will see used to-day are:

 

12000 (delta)

7620/13200Y

7960/13800Y

13200/23000Y

13800/24000Y

14400/24900Y

19920/34500Y

 

The history of why these voltages were chosen is a bit murky, at least to me. Here are some thoughts:

 

12000 volts delta is an old transmission standard from long ago, and while distribution systems using 12000 volt delta systems are not very common some were built for systems that operate over wide spread rural areas out west. Of course, since these were built using a three wire delta configuration, this required 12000 volt transformers.

 

7620/13200Y volts is a distribution voltage that is in common use. This is the voltage that is used in both Greenwich, CT, where I used to live, and Boca Raton, FL, where I now live. Also, since 23000 volt wye systems have 13,200 volts phase to natural, perhaps 7620/13200Y volts became convenient to use as a sort of downgrade when old 23000 volt transmission lines were no longer adequate for transmission and some were downgraded to distribution and converted to wye service. Just a thought, I don't know for sure.

 

7960/13800Y may have evolved from the fact that 13800 (delta) was an old transmission specification which was changed to wye and then used for distribution. While this article is primarily about distribution voltages and transformers, another interesting tidbit is that 27600 volt delta sub transmission is twice the old 13800 volt delta transmission voltage. As loads increased, it probably made sense to double the voltage, which would allow twice the power using the same size conductors, and this may be why 27600 delta is a standard sub transmission voltage to-day.

 

13200/23000Y, 13800/24000Y, 14400/24900Y, and 19920/34500 became distribution voltages for the same reason: old delta distribution voltages (the higher voltage) were changed over to wye and adapted for distribution. However, these higher voltages are not as common as the lower voltages for distribution.

 

For all these various distribution voltages, transformers are rated as follows:

 

HIGH VOLTAGE CONNECTIONS:

 

Phase to Phase Only:

 

These transformers HV bushings and coil can only withstand a limited voltage from the system ground, and must be connected phase to phase. Their rating will show only the coil voltage, as in 2400. 4800, 7200, etc.

 

Phase to Phase, or Phase to Neutral:

 

These transformers use fully insulated coils, and two HV bushings. Their rating will look like 7200/12470Y, where the coil voltage is 7200. Such a transformer could be connected phase to phase on a 7200 volt delta system, or phase to neutral on a 12470 wye system.

 

Phase to Neutral only (usually only have one HV bushing):

 

These use “graded” insulation, where there is less insulation at the end of the winding closest to ground. It will have a rating such as 4160GrdY/2400, or 13200GrdY/7620. This transformer will have a 2400 or 7620 volt coil, but one end of the coil must be connected to the neutral of a wye system as the insulation on the end of the coil is not capable of supporting a voltage that is the rated coil's voltage to ground.

 

LOW VOLTAGE CONNECTIONS:

 

120/240 V means the secondary can supply a load at either 120 or 240 volts as long as neither 120 volt coil section is overloaded

 

Transformers that can be internally reconnected from two wire to three wire service are designated 120/240 or 240/480 V (the smaller value first)

 

Transformers that cannot be reconnected are designated 240/120 or 480/240 V

 

It is interesting to me that many of the common voltages used to-day, and the voltages of early systems, used multiples of 10 for the distribution transformer ratio. Here are the ratios showing the present day primary voltages:

 

10:1 -- 2400 volts

20:1 -- 4800 volts

30:1 -- 7200 volts

50:1 -- 12000 volts

60:1 -- 14400 volts

 

Transformers with these ratios will deliver 240 volts on their secondaries (and 120 volts on either side of the secondary center tap) and can be connected phase to phase on delta systems operating at these voltages, or phase to neutral on wye systems operating at these voltages.

 

The ratios (for 240/120 volts on secondary) for other primary voltages are:

 

31.75:1 -- 7620

33.167:1 -- 7960

55:1 -- 13200

57.5:1 -- 13800

83:1 -- 19920 volts

Rencontres d'Arles

The Rencontres d’Arles (formerly called Rencontres internationales de la photographie d’Arles) is an annual summer photography festival founded in 1970 by the Arles photographer Lucien Clergue, the writer Michel Tournier and the historian Jean-Maurice Rouquette.

 

The Rencontres d’Arles has an international impact by showing material that has never been seen by the public before. In 2015, the festival welcomed 93,000 visitors.

 

The specially designed exhibitions, often organised in collaboration with French and foreign museums and institutions, take place in various historic sites. Some venues, such as 12th-century chapels or 19th-century industrial buildings, are open to the public throughout the festival.

 

The Rencontres d’Arles has revealed many photographers, confirming its significance as a springboard for photography and contemporary creativity.

 

In recent years the Rencontres d’Arles has invited many guest curators and entrusted some of its programming to such figures as Martin Parr in 2004, Raymond Depardon in 2006 and the Arles-born fashion designer Christian Lacroix.

Events

 

Opening week at the Rencontres d’Arles features photography-focused events (projections at night, exhibition tours, panel discussions, symposia, parties, book signings, etc.) in the town’s historic venues, some of which are only open to the public during the festival. Memorable events in recent years include Europe Night (2008), an overview of European photography; Christian Lacroix’s fashion show for the festival’s closing (2008); and Patti Smith’s concert for the Vu agency’s 20th anniversary (2006).

Nights at the Roman Theatre

 

At night, work by a photographer or a photography expert is projected in the town’s open-air Roman theatre accompanied by concerts and performances. Each event is a one-off creation. In 2009, 8,500 people attended evenings at the Roman theatre, an average of 2,000 a night, and 2,500 were there on closing night, when the Tiger Lilies played during a projection of Nan Goldin’s “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency”. In 2013 over 6,000 people attended the nighttime photography projections, an average of approximately 1,000 each night.

The Night of the Year

 

The Night of the Year, which was created in 2006, allows visitors to walk around and see the festival’s favourite works by artists and photographers as well as carte blanche exhibitions by institutions.

Cosmos-Arles Books

 

Cosmos-Arles Books is a Rencontres d’Arles satellite event dedicated to new publishing practices.

 

Over the past 15 years large-scale photographic publications, self-published books, and ebooks have become essential media for experimentation by photographers and artists. They allow photography to be rediscovered as a means of expression and distribution, providing a rich terrain of expression for the art’s fundamentally hybrid forms.

Symposia and panel discussions

 

Photographers and professionals participating in symposia and panel discussions during opening week discuss their work or issues raised by the images on display. In recent years the themes included whether a black-and-white aesthetic is still conceivable in photography (2013); the impact of social networks on creativity and information (2011); breaking with past, a key idea for photography today (2009); photography commissions: freedom or constraint (2008); challenges and changes in the photography market (2007).

The Rencontres d’Arles awards

 

Since 2002 the Rencontres d’Arles awards have been an opportunity to discover new talents. In 2007 the number of annual awards was reduced to three, presented at the closing ceremony of the festival’s professional week: the Discovery Award (€25,000), Author’s Book Award (€8,000) and History Book Award (€8,000).

Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award

 

In 2015 the Rencontres d’Arles offered an award to assist with the publication of a dummy book. Endowed with a €25,000 budget production budget, this new prize is open to all photographers and artists using photography who submit a dummy book that has never been published.

 

The winner’s book will be produced in autumn 2015 and be presented at the 2016 Rencontres d’Arles.

Photo Folio Review & Gallery

 

Since 2006 aspiring photographers have been able to submit their portfolios to international photography experts in various fields, including publishers, exhibition curators, heads of institutions, agency directors, gallery owners, collectors, critics and photo editors, for appraisal during the festival’s opening week. Photo Folio Review & Gallery offers them an opportunity to show their work throughout the festival.

Photography classes

 

The Rencontres d’Arles has always been a place where professional photographers and practitioners on every level have been able to meet each other and exchange ideas. Each year, photography class participants undertake a personal journey of creation through photography’s aesthetic, ethical and technological issues. Leading photographers such as Guy le Querrec, Antoine d’Agata, Martin Parr, René Burri and Joan Fontcuberta regularly teach at the Rencontres d’Arles.

Rentrée en Images

 

“Rentrée en Images” has been a key part of the festival’s educational activities since 2004. During the first two weeks in September, special mediators take students from the primary to graduate school level on guided tours of the exhibitions. Based on the festival’s programming, the event aims to introduce young people to the visual arts and fits in with a wider policy of cultural democratisation. “Rentrée en Images” reaches thousands of students, and for many of them it is their first exposure to contemporary art.

Public funding accounted for 40% of the 2015 festival’s €6.3-million budget, sales (mainly of tickets and derivative products), 40% and private partnerships, 20%[clarification needed][citation needed].

Birmingham Co-op Petrol Station and garage, Hagley Road West, Quinton, Birmingham. Standing next to a parade of Co-op shops (end shop just visible on left), it had closed by the 1980's (along with the shops) and was used by the Co-op dairy as a distribution depot.
