В предлагаемой диссертационной работе Б.В. Нешумов рассматривает мебель и элементы архитектурного декора с точеными формами в историческом развитии, показывает эволюцию этих форм, а также методов их обработки и отделки. Детально изучает декоративные свойства древесины различных пород, особенности ее заготовки, разделки, сушки, способы ее обработки. Рассказывает о развитии токарного станка и инструмента, об изменении токарных форм в мебели, подробно описывая декоративные и технические возможности этого вида обработки. Диссертация содержит богатый иллюстративный материал: огромное количество фотографий предметов мебели и интерьеров разных временных периодов, многочисленные чертежи, схемы, рисунки, выполненные самим автором и его учениками, образцы древесины, используемой в токарном производстве.
