A number of very bad events delayed this until now but It's over and done with at last!
And yes, that's my first intro slide--my dissertation work focused on factors that drive variability in predation within salt marsh habitats using blue crabs and marsh periwinkles as a model predator-prey system. A large portion of my work focused on predator-induced changes in snail shell morphologies--periwinkles are able to alter the thickness and shape of their shells in response to the perceived threat of predation by blue crabs. Very cool stuff going on out there under our noses.

Writing a dissertation feels like you are writing a chapter in your life. I never believed people when they told me not many people will understand what it is like to write one and spend so much invested time ensuring its perfect and your own words. Everything that already exists before has been well said by someone. Now, in your dissertation, you need to find a different way to say it. Every sentence feels like it must be meticulously written so that it adds to the story you are ‘selling.’ There is no room for redundancy. Everything you say has to be backed up and you must be prepared to defend it. Things you want to sweep under the carpet by simply not mentioning is risky as any one of your committee members can figure it out.
I do agree. Many people won’t know what it is like to spend years working toward one singular document that determines if you pass or fail. People think you can step away from writing to hang out and have fun, when you can't because it takes so long to get your train of thought back and piece the complexity of the story together again every time you step away (not many understand this like you do!).
That being said, I do realize my dissertation is not the end all and be all of my life. It is the launching pad. It is what will get my foot through the door. It is one of the many interests that I have decided to become an expert on for a short period of my life. I’m reminded of this as I spent days re-writing my thesis to achieve perfection. I shall listen to Amery’s advice when she said ‘just get it done and move on.’
In two weeks (isn't that a coincidence?) my final draft will be done and out of my hands. I know it will be a love and hate relationship with it -- I will love parts of it while I wish I could re-write others. I think this is true of anything we write.
Isn't this awesome! The end is near!!! I just got to push a bit harder and dig a bit deeper.
