The knee joint opened from the front shows the inner surface of the knee cap or patella within its large ligament which is folded downward and forward. The ear shaped cartilages lie on the surface of the joint floor formed by the tibia. Between the cartilages one sees the cut ends of the cruciate ligaments so often injured in athletics and frequently reconstructed surgically.

Busted apart the flywheel chasis, and its not as complicated internally as I initially imagined it would be.

n.

1. The act or an instance of dissecting.

2. Something that has been dissected, such as a tissue specimen under study.

3. A detailed examination or analysis.

This is my cane toad dissection. We normally have to do them in groups so I was pretty pleased to be able to do one on my own. I picked a good specimen who turned out to have some interesting bits. We were collecting a variety of data from them, including: sex, mass (g), SVL (Snout-to-Vent Length in mm), Snout-to-Urostyle Length (mm), Lung Parasites (presence and number), Stomach Contents (weight and type), Reproductive Organs (weight in g, including egg mass in females) and Fat Bodies (g).

Mouse over the image to see notes identifying most recognizable structures (cobbled together from what we saw during the dissection, my existing knowledge, and the internets; hope I got everything right!)

For this study, biologists measure and dissect female black crappie and collect the ovaries (the orange organs pictured here) for analysis. They prepare microscope slides using slices of the ovaries. By viewing these slides, biologists can determine if fish are mature enough to spawn.

Each half is folded from a single uncut hexagon. The lock on the "bottom" is actually extremely strong, since the tabs/pockets have a flanged shape.

Students dissected the brain. This shows the ventral side of the brain with the infundibulum, optic chiasma, pons and medulla oblongata visible. Dissection chronicled at www.biologycorner.com/anatomy/sheepbrain/sheep_dissection...

A side view of the high rise condominium 'The Mirabella'. Its graceful curving front façade in contrast to its waterfront facing side which appears like a piece of architecture dissected.

This frog was dissected in biology class, you can see the spleen because the stomach is pushed to the side. Additional images, instructions and dissection guide can be found at www.biologycorner.com

Easiest dissection into two cubes.

This lily was completely wilted, bent over so far the petals were starting to detach. So I thought... why not see if I could carefully pull the last petals off and lay it all out. (with visions of grandeur anticipating something spectacular like the exploding flowers by Fong Qi Wei...yeah like that was going to happen)

Although for a first attempt, it's not a total disaster....

I will use the excuse that I did spend from 9:30am to 4:00pm on an educational outreach for the zoo at a local science fair. There were about 400 attendees of all ages, AND it was the first time I handled the raptors in public on my own, and it was just a long day... so my creative side wanted to clear my head by doing something cool, but it just added to the gelatinous goo that was left of my mind....

On the right the calvaria and layers of the scalp are shown in relation to the dura. On the left the dura has been cut away to reveal the cerebral hemisphere and cerebellum covered with the arachnoid membrane. The confluence of the sinuses is shown.

Portions of the conchae have been cut away to expose the openings of the paranasal sinuses and nasolacrimal duct. The pterygopalatine canal has been opened and the cartilage of the auditory tube exposed. The muscles of the palate have been dissected and the palatine tonsil removed. Structures which lie lateral and anterior to the tonsil have been dissected.

Hyman Bloom: Matters of Life and Death - MFA Exibition

Boston painter Hyman Bloom (1913–2009) combined the physical and the spiritual on canvas. In his paintings from the 1940s and 1950s of the human body after death, of autopsies, skeletal trees, and archeological excavations, he got beneath the surface of things, exploring form and seeking significance. Committed to figurative painting at a defining moment of American art when abstraction was on the rise, Bloom employed thick paint in jewel-like tones to make gripping and beautiful works that challenge our concepts of beauty and our understanding of the true meaning of “still life.” As writer and painter Elaine de Kooning described it, Bloom “seems to think with his brush,” revealing complicated philosophical meanings “in the action of [his] painting.”

“Hyman Bloom: Matters of Life and Death” includes approximately 70 dramatic paintings and drawings from public and private collections—including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the Addison Gallery of American Art—that chart the artist’s career as well as his constant interest in the human body. Bloom’s complex works draw upon the artist’s Jewish faith, his interest in Eastern religions, and his transcendent belief in regeneration. In Female Corpse, Back View (1947), pictured above, he renders a decomposing cadaver with a palette of rich colors. As he remarked, in such images "the paradox of the harrowing and the beautiful could be brought into unity." (Boston MFA)

Not something you see everyday! I used to teach human anatomy to under and post graduate level. My youngest, Phoebe is going to uni to study Vet-med, the anatomy of the pig is very similar to that of a human so we are doing some dissections to allow Phoebe to gain surgical skills such as scapel control and to learn her basic mammal anatomy. Today a pigs head, tomorrow the eye and heart and then next week the pluck. Max is going to have field day with all this piggy meat!

Ribs and vertebral bodies have been resected bilaterally between the second and the ninth thoracic segments. The periosteum which covered the inner surfaces of the ribs have been preserved in most areas. The anterior longitudinal ligament, with remnants of the intervertebral discs attached, has also been retained in part. The lungs have been inflated and are visible through the intact costal pleura. The proximal parts of the III-VII spinal nerves have been positioned on the pleura in such a way that their dorsal and ventral roots, dorsal rami and communications with the sympathetic trunks are visible. These components are labeled for the left seventh thoracic nerve. The intercostal arteries and veins have been cut off in various ways.
