50 km north of the Arctic Circle on Qeqertarsuup Tunua, (Disko) Bay in the central part of the west coast of Greenland.
In the 15th century, European whalers came to the area and traded with the Inuit who had settled there in the meantime.

Im 15. Jahrhundert kamen europäische Walfänger in das Gebiet und trieben Handel mit den Inuit, die sich in der Zwischenzeit dort niedergelassen hatten.
Please don’t take this photo—or the title—too seriously. Of course, I am well aware that these freshwater prawns, which I spotted at a market in Nonthaburi, are destined to be eaten soon.
But when I saw the colorfully illuminated aquariums, I was instantly reminded of a 1980s disco. All that’s missing is the disco ball. And, of course, the right music.

Doch als ich die farbenfroh beleuchteten Aquarien gesehen habe, musste ich spontan an eine Diskothek der 1980iger Jahre. Da fehlt nur noch die Diskokugel. Und natürlich die passende Musik.

The common name is Nunarput ("Our Land")
It belongs geographically to North America and geologically to the Arctic sub-region.
Greenland's north coast is the closest large contiguous land mass to the North Pole at a distance of 740 kilometres.

These icebergs have run aground on a 2-300 meter deep terminal moraine at the mouth of the Iulissat Icefjord. The pressure from the calving glacier and thousands of icebergs in the fjord will push them over the moraine into Disko Bay from where they continue their long journeys. Unfortunately there is no boat in this photo to give a sense of scale. The tallest icebergs would be about 70m (230 feet) high.

Greenlanders once used icebergs to distinguish the seasons and even to identify towns, a testament to their steadfast presence and to the intertwined character of Greenlandic culture with our country’s powerful nature. Media stress that the ice in Greenland is melting, and while this is absolutely true, as long as the Greenland Ice Sheet exists, icebergs of all sizes and shapes will fill these Arctic waters. This is a double opportunity, I had this picture for almost 2 years in my todo folder without touching it. I tried to go B&W on this one, but it never worked. Finally I came up with this 50% Overlay Spicyfy and a bicolor cold/warm filter and now it works for me.
The guy in focus also allows me to have one of my guilty pleasures in the playlist set. Sometimes I have this addiction to eastern south-eastern Klezmer pop/ska.

Yesterday we explored the majestic basalt-column area of Disko Island outside Qeqertarsuq.
For almost a kilometre, the coastline explodes into some of the most remarkable basalt I've ever seen, and even after three years exploring the area, I've made new discoveries every year. Love this area so much.

Summer: July is the warmest month on Disko Island, with temperatures occasionally reaching above freezing. The landscape is fully thawed, and plant life is in full bloom. The island is bathed in 24-hour sunlight, and the sea is mostly ice-free.
