there are total of 5 disks in this hard drive. I finally found a tool I needed to disassemble the drive completely. The shinny metal disk is where the digital bits are stored. If you want to be sure to destroy your data you have to physically or chemically destroy the shinny surface of this disk. I am working on that as I type this.

The idea here was to capture the movement of the disk arm. It was successful to an extent, but a lot harder than I thought as the thing flicks around so fast, getting a shot where it was in more than once place long enough was an exercise in luck!

They strung me along with empty promises until the dispute period expired, then ignored my pleas. More fool me, but that makes them thieves, doesn't it? (Someone asked for an update: It's been two years or more. The point was: Even such high-volume and highly-regarded sellers can be rats from time to time. If they have something you want, at a price you like, it will probably be a problem-free transaction, but don't be surprised if there is something wrong, and do your objection and claims routines early. Don't let them run out the dispute period, as I did.
Matter of fact, I have something coming from them tomorrow (03 June 2009). We'll see how it develops ...)
(A week later: This one was perfect: excellent price, careful packing, timely delivery of an item that is exactly as advertised. I guess every one is a gamble; win a couple, lose a couple.)
These small disks didn't come out quite like I'd hoped. I have had very good luck with the big pavlova meringue circle, but my attempts at shrinking down the size to fit on a cupcake, needs work. Then again, they will be covered in whipped cream, so I shouldn't sweat it so much.

This started out as a photo of 16 frosted-glass disks (about 2 inches in diameter) in a 4x4 grid which is still partially visible. All of the colors and patterns emerged by repeatedly adding Photoshop adjustment layers or filters. These don't add color to the image, they intensify (and sometimes shift) the colors that are hidden there. Even though I've done this enough to know what to expect it still surprises me when I see how many differences there are in each of the disks.
