Oberammergau is a municipality in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in Bavaria, Germany. The town is famous for its production of a Passion Play, its woodcarvers, and the NATO School.
The Oberammergau Passion Play was first performed in 1634 and is the result of a vow made by the inhabitants of the village that if God spared them from the effects of the bubonic plague then sweeping the region they would perform a passion play every ten years. The play is now performed in years ending with a zero, as well as in 1934 which was the 300th anniversary and 1984 which was the 350th anniversary (though the 1940 performance was cancelled because of the intervention of the Second World War). It involves over 2000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians, all residents of the village.
The village is also known as the home of a long tradition of woodcarving; the Bavarian State Woodcarving School is located there. Among the celebrated former students is the German artist Wolfram Aichele. His processional church staff depicting Christ on a donkey can be seen in the church of St Peter and St Paul. The streets of central Oberammergau are home to dozens of woodcarver shops, with pieces ranging from religious subjects, to toys, to humorous portraits.
Oberammergau is also famous for its "Lüftlmalerei," or frescoes, of traditional Bavarian themes, fairy tales, religious scenes or architectural trompe-l'œil found on many homes and buildings.

Glenfinnan, Mallaig & Jacobite Steam Train
A stunning tour that takes us to film locations from movies such as Highlander, Local Hero, Skyfall and Harry Potter.
Enjoy an optional trip on the Jacobite steam train – a journey described by many as one of the great railway journeys of the world. The train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, known the world over for its remarkable engineering and more importantly, as the way to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.
From Glasgow we follow the full length of Loch Lomond before we make a short stop for coffee at Tyndrum.
Then it’s on to Glencoe, a film location used in Skyfall and Harry Potter and the setting to one of the most shameful episodes in Scottish history. We stop here to admire the stunning but haunting beauty of the Glen.
In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at Glenfinnan in an ill-fated attempt to reinstate the exiled Stuarts on to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland. The Glenfinnan Monument which lies at the head of Loch Shiel was erected in 1815 in tribute to the Jacobites who fought and died in the cause of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. The views and scenery here are simply spectacular.
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Loch Eilt was the spot where Hagrid was seen skimming stones across the water. As we pass Loch Eilt look out for the Loch Eilt pines – a fine example of the ancient Caledonian pine forest. An essential stopping off point is the Silver Sands of Morar with superb coastline views across a turquoise sea to the Isles of Eigg, Rum and further north to Skye.
Arriving in Mallaig you will have approximately an hour to enjoy a walk and take in the local atmosphere. There are shops, bars, restaurants and the chance to sample some local fish and chips.
From Mallaig you have the option to return to Fort William on the Jacobite Steam Train (optional extra) or you can return on the coach. For those taking the optional steam train ride, your driver-guide will arrange your tickets and will be waiting for you at Fort William.
Our return journey takes us over Rannoch Moor and to the Drovers Inn. For over 310 years the Drovers has welcomed the great and the good including the infamous Rob Roy MacGregor.
It is said to be “haunted” and there are many tales and sightings of ghouls and ghosts wandering around this ancient Scottish Inn. These days it is the perfect place to enjoy some evening refreshments by a roaring log fire before returning to Glasgow.
