Kaolin mine. That's the fine white powdery substance, intersected with quartz veins there.
"One of these, a seam of porcelain-grade kaolin, was on the western flanks of El Cajon Mountain. Discovered in 1906, it was one of several noteworthy finds by prospecting mineralogist John H. McKnight." Extract from www.sandiegohistory.org/journal/99fall/china.htm It was used to make dishes and tiles and stuff. Maybe found in a few locales places on the local/Santee hills from what is visible in hillside white washes/creeks.
This is the left hand turn off after the first height, before the descent to the grueling climb to the three-way fork to the summit.
The same powdery substance, the kaolin, is a few other places on the hike. Kaolin is an industrial mineral with about a million uses according to wiki. It is made from chemical weathering, so that explains why there were quartz veins right through it.
Glenfinnan, Mallaig & Jacobite Steam Train

Enjoy an optional trip on the Jacobite steam train – a journey described by many as one of the great railway journeys of the world. The train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, known the world over for its remarkable engineering and more importantly, as the way to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.
From Glasgow we follow the full length of Loch Lomond before we make a short stop for coffee at Tyndrum.
Then it’s on to Glencoe, a film location used in Skyfall and Harry Potter and the setting to one of the most shameful episodes in Scottish history. We stop here to admire the stunning but haunting beauty of the Glen.
In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at Glenfinnan in an ill-fated attempt to reinstate the exiled Stuarts on to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland. The Glenfinnan Monument which lies at the head of Loch Shiel was erected in 1815 in tribute to the Jacobites who fought and died in the cause of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. The views and scenery here are simply spectacular.
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Loch Eilt was the spot where Hagrid was seen skimming stones across the water. As we pass Loch Eilt look out for the Loch Eilt pines – a fine example of the ancient Caledonian pine forest. An essential stopping off point is the Silver Sands of Morar with superb coastline views across a turquoise sea to the Isles of Eigg, Rum and further north to Skye.
Arriving in Mallaig you will have approximately an hour to enjoy a walk and take in the local atmosphere. There are shops, bars, restaurants and the chance to sample some local fish and chips.
From Mallaig you have the option to return to Fort William on the Jacobite Steam Train (optional extra) or you can return on the coach. For those taking the optional steam train ride, your driver-guide will arrange your tickets and will be waiting for you at Fort William.
Our return journey takes us over Rannoch Moor and to the Drovers Inn. For over 310 years the Drovers has welcomed the great and the good including the infamous Rob Roy MacGregor.
It is said to be “haunted” and there are many tales and sightings of ghouls and ghosts wandering around this ancient Scottish Inn. These days it is the perfect place to enjoy some evening refreshments by a roaring log fire before returning to Glasgow.
Proactive Property Crimes Unit waits for #Lakebay burglar to return to victim's property and arrests him.
On Sept. 8, a homeowner discovered that his vacant rental property in #Lakebay had been burglarized and that multiple items had been stolen. After filing a police report, he was cleaning up around the house and found court documents from a #KitsapCounty criminal case that the suspect had left behind. The homeowner was able to track down the suspect’s name and a phone number for his mother. He called the suspect’s mother and was eventually put in contact with the suspect, who said he was willing to return some of the items.
The homeowner teamed up with our #ProactivePropertyCrimesUnit and they put together a plan to meet the suspect yesterday at his #Lakebay property. When the suspect pulled into the driveway, deputies exited the house and ordered him out of the car. They placed him in handcuffs and arrested him.
Inside the suspect’s SUV, deputies found a TV, weed eater, generator and oxygen tanks that had been stolen from the property. These items were returned to the homeowner. The suspect admitted to burglarizing the property and said he had recently relapsed on #meth. He was booked into the Pierce County Jail. #PCSD

Now that Johänni has discovered her love for photography (and for my Nikon D7000), I don't get to use it as often as I used to. So I got us a new lens for her Olypmus "PEN" E-P1 to make up for my loss. The Panasonic Lumix G 20mm F1.7 Asph. is just great. Where the kit lens often left me belittling the little camera and wanting to have a "real" one, with this new baby I felt just at home with it.
Go and get one if you own a Micro Four Thirds camera!

I discovered this simple memorial whilst I was walking back to my B&B in Harmondsworth. A simple bench with a plaque(www.flickr.com/photos/fateapics/54309144843/in/datetaken-...) that reads "In Memory Of Tommy Thomas 1922-2015. 161SD Sqn Lysander Mail Pick-Up" together with a 161 Squadron wreath.
That immediately got my interest as I knew 161 Squadron were part of Special Operations Executive(WW2) who dropped off secret agents and collected communications.
