Depeche Mode are an English electronic band that formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The group consists of founders Dave Gahan (lead vocals, occasional songwriter since 2005), Martin Gore (guitar, keyboards, vocals, main songwriter since 1982), and Andy Fletcher (keyboards, bass guitar). Depeche Mode released their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Original band member Vince Clarke (keyboards, guitar, main songwriter from 1980 to 1981), left the band after the release of the album, leaving the band as a trio to record A Broken Frame, released the following year. Gore took over the lead songwriting duties and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, bass guitar, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band to fill Clarke's spot, establishing a line up that would continue for the next 13 years. Depeche Mode have been a trio again since 1995, when Wilder left.

This record forms part of a new series issued by DGG in their Debut series, presenting young, relatively unknown artists. The series sells at a bargain price, but the recording itself is in no way inferior to that of DGG's full-priced discs, which means, of course, that it is very good indeed. Lucky the young singers and instrumentalists who find themselves being presented in this way ! Zola Shaulis is a Californian. She is now about thirty, but although she has won some most prestigious awards (the Rio de Janeiro competition in 1969, the Naumburg last year) she has apparently not embarked on the usual professional career, preferring, so the sleeve-note tells us, to devote herself to her family. She sounds eminently sensible and sympathetic, and so does her playing of the Goldberg Variations. She has the two fundamental qualities of a gooc Bach-player —excellent control of the part-writing and a nice sense of rhythm that springs straight out of the linear qualities of Bach's melodies. She also has, when she chooses to use it, an evenly-matched, limpid tone-quality, which one can hear straight away in the Aria on which Bach bases his variations. Unfortunately, or so it seems to me, Miss Shaulis chooses to 'register' several of the variations (I, IV, VIII, X, XIV etc.) more heavily, no doubt for the sake of contrast, and here her playing takes on a slightly aggressive quality that I find less appropriate. But this, of course, stems from the problem of finding an analogy on the piano for the harpsichord's ability to produce more tone by purely mechanical means. With the piano, extra weight has to come directly from the player, and it is difficult not to make this pianisticforte sound too personal and urgent. One or two of the more brilliant variations (V, XXVI) are turned into almost Czernyish studies, but this too is a matter of finding a pianistic equivalent for a harpsichord effect—and Miss Shaulis certainly has the fingerfertigkeit to carry it off. At the other end of the expressive range she treats the slower, more inward variations (XXI, XXV) with a discreet rubato that only occasionally seems to me to linger a little too languidly. On the whole she eschews any of the expressive exaggerations into which pianists tend to fall with Bach, and relies on the music, clearly and cleanly delivered, to make its own points. Music that was conceived so much in terms of the two-manual harpsichord can perhaps never sound quite its best on an instrument so different as the piano, but I much enjoyed listening to Miss Shaulis's account of the Goldberg Variations for all that.
Oddly enough her Prokofiev seems to me rather less impressive, but this may well be because I still had Maurizio Pollini's remarkable account of the same sonata in my ears (DGG 2530 225, 6/71). Miss Shaulis, excellent technician as she is, does not seem to me to have quite the weight for this very muscular piece; one can hear this at the climaxes of the first and third movements in particu
